Whirlpool Oven Door Removal Old Style without hinge lock

  • Circa 2000 whirlpool oven door removal. This whirlpool oven does not have the typical hinge lock that the more recent models have which allow easy removal of the door. This style incorporates a hole which you need to put an Allen key in or a nail to allow it to disengage from the main oven body. It’s very easy and straightforward. Removal of the door will allow easy disassembly of the door and cleaning of the interior glass.

    Few updates - I just recently took the lower door off the hinge in order to clean the interior of the glass panels. I had done the upper door in this video. Very easy to do. I used a 16D nail to put in the hole. Cut the nail so that it is about 3/8ths - 4/8ths of an inch long including the head. That allows it to stick into the hole when the door is open and the head keeps it from going through. They have to be short in order to remove the hinge during the glass cleaning process below. If they are too long then you will not be able to get the hinge out of it placement and separate the metal pieces to remove the glass. I cut the nail with some bolt cutters. Once the two nail pieces are in place close the door which pinches the nails and keeps them in place. Instructions from Whirlpool Technical manual
    To remove the oven door:
    1.Install a pin (nail in this case) in the hole of each oven door hinge hanger.
    2.Close the oven door as far as the two pins will allow.
    3.Grasp the sides of the door and lift the door until it stops, then pull the hinge hangers out of the slots.
    4. With two hands remove and carefully place the door on a table with a towel in place to protect it.
    Remove the door handle piece of glass by removing 4 screws. Two are on the top and two are on the bottom. Two of the screws have a small metal bracket that hold the glass in place. Remove that glass/handle piece and clean with windex and towels. Now onto the other piece of glass. Having the short nails will now allow you to remove the 4 screws (2 for each) holding the hinge spring assembly. Remove the screws and gently lift the hinge spring assembly out of the hole. Do this on both sides. The screws are the only screws visible on the inside of the door (right behind the hinge, 2 on each side). The removal of the screws allows the metal plate holding the glass in place. Now the metal frame can be removed and the glass taken out and cleaned. I used a razor to clean the baked on grease. Clean all metal and glass surfaces. Reassemble.
    To reinstall the oven door:
    1. Grasp the sides of the door and tilt it back at a slight angle, then insert the hinge hangers into the hinge slots as far as they will go.
    2. Rotate the top of the door towards the oven so the hinge hangers fit onto the support pins.
    3. Close the oven door as far as the pins will allow, and make sure that the hinge hangers are fully seated on the support pins. If they are not seated properly, the door will not close tightly and may be off-center. To seat the hinge hangers, open the door slightly, and push in on the bottom until the hangers are fully seated.
    4. Open the oven door to its fully open position and remove the two hinge hanger pins (nails in my case....)
    5. Close the oven door completely and check it for proper operation and alignment
    I also replaced the upper barrel blower fan for $140. Makes a huge difference in the sound of the oven. Definately worth it if you oven is noisy. Also replaced the thermal inline fuse protecting the circuit panel. This cost $20.
    This manual explains a ton on the oven and is well worth the read....

    Enjoy!

    This video didn't give me great confidence in removing and being sure that I could put the door back since the guy actually doesn't remove or put back the door. The best thing anybody looking at this video can do is to instead look the users guide for your oven since that nicely explains everything. What they also tell you is use 5/32" allen wrench keys - short end inserted into the hole that was pointed in the video. That size is the recommended size from Whirlpool. I just finished removing and re-installing today - it is an easy job - I was unnecessarily worried. After cleaning the insides of the oven door, the things looks as good as new!
    Procedure as per the manual:
    1. Open the door fully
    2. Insert small end of the 5/32 Allen Wrench or similar diameter nail into the two holes
    3. Grasp the top handle of the door and gently close as far it will shut. Pull door out at the bottom to remove.
    4. Instructions don't say this until later - but don't try to remove the Allen wrench at this stage.
    To clean the oven door, you need to remove only 4 screws - two on the top edge of the door and two exactly on the opposite edge - the screws that became visible due to door removal. Don't remove the screws from the bottom face of the door. [This is my instruction]
    To put the door back:
    1. Keeping the door almost vertical, insert the hinge arms into the slots in the frame. Push at lower corner to make sure that they fully engage.
    2. Open the door all the way
    3. Remove the Allen wrench keys
    4. Close the door
    I was so worried about door going back - but it was a piece of cake.

    For the people asking about how to put them back. It’s really easy. Just put it back the same way it came out and open the door all the way. The tension comes off the hole and take off the nail.

    An update - just cleaned this oven again. Actually did it all with out reading these great instructions below. Couple of variants I thought I would mention. This time I cut 2 small 16 Penny nails to 3/4 of an inch. I just cut the shank part so both pieces do not have the nail head. This length gives you plenty of margin on both sides of the hinge for you don't want the nail piece to come off. The problem presented when it is 3/4 of an inch is that you cannot remove the hinge assembly (nail prevents it) which is required to get the middle piece of glass out for cleaning. Solution is to take a pair of vice grips that are closed and put them over the hinge through the open part of the jaws. That allows you to easily put leverage on the hinge (the hinge hook rests on the vice grip) to remove the nail pin carefully. Then you can remove the entire hinge which also releases the metal panel holding the middle piece of glass. There is some insulation in there as well that can be carefully removed. Entire process took about an hour. Thought I would throw out some other observations.... do not use the oven in the cleaning mode. It gets way too hot and burns out the thermal fuse. This fuse is easy to replace but getting the oven out to access it is a pain. So I quit using the self cleaning feature. Yours may have better ventilation in the back such that the temperature does not trip the one time use thermal fuse. Second, I replaced the squirrel cage fan since the original one was old and making a lot more noise than it should. Again an easy replacement. In 25 years of using this oven those are the only two things I have done on the oven. The heating elements are still the original ones. This oven rocks!

Thanks to you.... I just removed the door and now am going to to replace the interior cracked glass. I used those metal pins for meant for holding up shelves, and it was perfect.
    Long story short, never, ever, EVER, use the self clean feature (code: for self destructing clean feature) on the double oven. Its rolling the dice for malfunction.

It’s an easy repair and cheap but getting the thing out of the enclosure is not worth it. If there was some supplemental air flow or venting it would probably be fine. No big deal for us anyway. Again glad it was helpful. You rock!

    Thank you very much for the video, it was really hard finding out how to remove door on such an old unit... I was a little scared I wouldn't be able to figure out how to reinstall the door since you didn't mention how to do it in the video. For those in the same boat, here's my experience. I put 2 allen wrenches in each hole. I took out the door with the instructions mentioned in the video. When you remove the door, the allen wrenches get locked into the hinges. When you're ready to put it back in, just do the opposite... Insert the hinges in the hole while the door is in the almost closed position. Lower the door and the hinges will install and the allen wrenches will be released and you can take them out. Hope this helps. Thanks again for the video, I would never have been able to figure it out without it!

    How to Put the Door on a Whirlpool Super Capacity 465 Accubake Oven
    The hinges on a Whirlpool Super Capacity 465 Accubake oven attach to the oven door rather than the body of the oven. When you remove the oven door to make repairs, you must secure the hinges in the open position to allow you to put the door back onto the hidden hinge pins after the repairs are finished. Failure to secure the hinges can complicate the reinstallation of the oven door, as the hinge springs make it difficult to move the hinges from the closed to the open positions.
    1-Lay the oven door face down on a stable work surface or the ground.
    2-Grab the exposed hinges at the bottom left and right sides of the door with your fingers or pliers. Pull the hinges from the door until you expose the small round opening on each hinge.
    3-Insert a small finishing nail through the holes in the hinges. Release the hinge. The small nails hold the hinges open.
    4.Lift the oven door. Make sure the open hinges face away from you.
    5-Insert the hinges into the slots cut in each side of the oven opening. Two hinge pins exist inside these slots.
    Lower the hinges onto the pins. This may take a couple of tries before you hook the hinges over the pins, as the pins are hidden from view.
    6-Close the Whirlpool Super Capacity 465 Accubake oven door as far as the nails in the hinges will allow. Hold the door in this position while you remove the finishing nails from the hinges. Allow the oven door to close.
    Things You Will Need
    -Pliers
    -Small finishing nails
    Hope this helps, I found this directions in the internet after I watched the video and then have a little trouble to put the door back. However, I watched this video firsts and helped a lot, thanks so much for taking the time to post it.

    Great video. Just what I needed. My door on my Whirlpool built in oven closes just fine, but doesn't remain closed all the way after I shut it. If straight up is 90 degrees from the floor, then I would say my door is at 87 degrees from the floor when closed. Will replacing the springs hinges do the trick?

    • @condor5635
      @condor5635  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      JO - is the 3 degree variation you describe something that pushing it forward with your hand closes? Or is it stuck there? Hard to say - if you can close it completely by pushing on it with a little force it might be that the springs have weakened over the years. When mine is closed there is no play in it. It is firmly against the rubber stops. Replacing the springs would not be difficult to do. You just have to be careful because they are very strong springs. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      @@condor5635 Yes. I can easily push the door forward the 3 degrees, but then it 'springs' right back to 87 degrees. If it goes to say 86 degrees, the oven light comes on. I took out the hinges/springs today and had an idea to relocate the pin up a 1/2" or so, thus tightening the spring some more. After seeing how tight the spring is, and knowing that springs can be deadly or cause serious injury, I opted not to try my idea and just order new hinges with springs. There goes $85 shipped for two new hinges with springs. Hope this does the trick! Thanks for your input, and again for your video. Got the door off in seconds!

      @condor5635  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      JO - interesting idea on movement of the mounting hole but probably easier in the end to just get the springs like you did. Please let me know how the new springs work out. Mine may be close to going out as well! Thanks

    • @condor5635
      @condor5635  ปีที่แล้ว

      At the very bottom of the lower oven if you open the doors, you’ll see two screws. One on the left one on the right right near the hinges the screws go through the trim pieces remove the screws in the trim piece will shift down and come out.

      @condor5635  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you don’t have the hole in the hinge like this oven and you don’t have the more recent hinge with the part that unlocks the hinge by pulling up on the little lever? The hole is only visible when the door is completely open

    Tanks for this video. Does anyone know hoe to make adjustments on this hinge configuration so the door closes completely? I switched doors from top to bottom so I know the problem is in the oven, not the door. THANKS

    • @condor5635
      @condor5635  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Pusateri - I actually took this oven out yesterday to clean the squirrel cage fan. I don’t think switching the doors was a good idea. You probably want to stick with the way they were. Is there a reason you switched the doors? Although you might be able to make an adjustment with the oven removed inside paneling taken off it would appear to be difficult if not impossible just from my thoughts. Thanks for watching and the comment

      With the hinges still having the pins in them put the hinges back into their holes and you should be able to move the door and allow the hinges to lock/engage back in place Where are you can remove the pins at that point

    This works great! But I’ll admit a video would have been great for us literal knuckleheads. Studied my hinges (was exactly like this one) for 30 minutes and couldn’t figure out how it was going to work. Hunted for other videos and web to no avail. Finally got my Allen wrenches out, inserted short ends from outside in, leaned long end agains stove body, slowly closed door and eureka! Magic happened! Put the door back on just to verify, a little trickier but not much! Now just hoping there is a thermal switch I can reset once I pull it out that popped during self-(shoot yourself in the foot) cleaning. Thanks for video! Never would have figured it out myself.

    • @condor5635
      @condor5635  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. The thermal switch Is in the back of the oven. It is not resettable you have to buy the part. It’s an easy fix but getting the oven out as a quite a chore. We don’t use our self cleaning anymore due to the fact that the thermal switch has tripped twice. Cabinet must get too hot. 😞
