Chapter 20 is over 70 minutes long (over 11.5K words)! Here is the first 40 Minutes. The next chapter is rated 18! There are depictions of the Drazzan eating... which @ekhidna4 describes in great detail and it's not for the faint hearted. Sorry, but this chapter was truly disappointing. Way over-done about Wyatt's past as a child, to the point of boring. It could have been done so much faster but still getting all the point of why he hates the aliens so badly... almost seemed someone else wrote this single chapter because every chapter beside this one has been absolutely amazing. I mean no insult, only a bit of constructive criticism. I'm a huge fan of *The Black Ship* _(have commented before how "it's the best")_ and can only hope things go back to the great, very interesting writing we have known so far. Thank you for all your work.

He saw Serhan Giron when he shot that Caystan fella.
Distrust of Nobles comes from more than Serhan's actions. But hatred for the Drazzan? Yeeees.

After the venom in Waytts voice and his glee at causing Drazzen to die I guessed his backstory was going to be a harsh one and I was right. When Waytt described what Drazzen do to their 'feed', I also guessed it was first hand experience that brought on those justifylibe dark emotions. I am glad this is just a story because that kind of trauma would destroy most people. Our author has once again crafted a chapter that is ever bit as emotional as all that has come before. I feel sorrow for young Waytt because we know none of his friends survived and so many more will die because of a filthy not-so-noble.
Sir Author, Well done! And though the wait was long it has been worth it. Part 2 awaits.

This story of Wyatt’s was interesting, hope the next chapter shows how he survived, kind of hope Drazzen reneges on the deal and blue blood gets what he deserves

I do like how this chapter starts with Wyatt telling Cynthia and Clara about why he has eternal hatred for the Drazin. Interesting how it happened when Wyatt was young than 14 years old. Its funny hearing young Wyatt, he is hilarious and adorable. I do find it rather poor planing of the teaching staff of the children not having a network on the ship to keep the children entertained with TV shows and computer games for a trip taking many days.
Its interesting to see what games are around for commoners from Volatis from Wyatt's POV. Interesting to hear the reason why Wyatt hate the Drazin is because they attacked the ship he was on for the field trip. Interesting how Wyatt avoided the Drazin at least so far because he was playing hide and seek. So in this chapter we see why Wyatt to degree hates nobles after seeing a noble willing to sacrifice 1000s of commoners for his own life.
I wonder if any of Wyatt's friends that came with him on this trip will survive. Probably the only ones that have the best chance of surviving are the ones that know about the vent systems and how to navigate them. I was surprised this was done nearly entirely from Wyatt's childhood but never less enjoyed it a lot!

I have an inclination that the Noble Wyatt executed might possibly be involved/related to this Drazzen disaster.
This is helping to explain Wyatt’s mental state but I still find it annoying that he announces his little worth so fervently rather than assertively accepting whatever authority he is given however temporary or meager.
Likely this is a behavior developed by law of power #1. Never outshine the Master! He learned harshly from in his days at the Military Academy.
I’d like to see him have quiet confidence that builds quickly to match his reckless emboldening in battles.
He certainly is a miraculous boon for the Principality proving to have unrivaled and invaluable worth.
If I was the Prince I’d create a new class that was comprised of exceptional “disgraced nobles,” commoners, Former pirates, espionage agents, etc.
That would keep the class structure from falling apart while positioning these gifted and crucial players close to the top.
Like the Royal Marines. I don’t recall them being identified as Nobility and that kind of position doesn’t seem to be a position a Noble would volunteer for despite the fact that they are highly regarded, invested in, and I am sure positions that are held with great honor. Are they a commoner class? Is there a particular “guild” of peak quality soldier specimen commoner these ranks are filled from?!? It seems that these soldiers probably shouldn’t come from a place that has the most typical experience and opinion of Royalty and Nobility!!!
I am curious where Royal Marines are “bred” and what class system they hail from!

The noble that Wyatt executed back in chapter 12 part 3 was a Cayston and the cowardly noble in this chapter was a Gimor. It is a possibility but more likely not that the Samuel Cayston had nothing to do with the failure to prevent the Drazin pirates from ravaging so much of that star system.
Wyatt's personality is largely based on focusing surviving anything that might come his way. The best way to survive nobility is don't draw to much attention to yourself and do what ever a noble orders you to do, no mater how demeaning it can be. Wyatt does value his life but his experience that is being shown in chapter 20 shows brutally that nobles more often than not will be to sacrifice lots of commoners or lower ranking nobles to keep their own lives.
I do think that Prince and Clara are planning on when the time is right to elevate Wyatt to a noble rank. You can hear every so often Prince and Clara mentioning that they are still in Wyatt's debt even after elevating him to LT and him getting cybernetic implants. That will be after Wyatt is comfortable being a officer, after the loyalists capture traitor territories and strip traitor nobles families of their titles.
Your correct in that the new author has intentionally not mentioned the origins of the people who make up the Royal Marines. I mentioned to ekhidna4 back in chapter 12 part 3 that Royal Marines give me Warhammer 40k Space Marines or Adeptus Custodes vibe. He responded with "if there's a fair comparison from 40K to the Royal Marines, they would be the Tempestus Scions." I have a feeling that the RM are comprised of anyone from the Principality of Astor that has unconditional loyalty to the royal family, smart enough and strong enough able to meet the physical and mental demands it takes to become one.
The mystery behind the Royal marines will eventually be answered, rest assured.

@scifistories1977 Insanely important and deep episode! Kudos to the author for fleshing out Wyatt's complicated character (why he is the way he is, why he feels the way he feels). Many times a traumatic past is glossed over, but this one recollection combines several character-defining traits into one episode.
When we return to real-time, I can imagine both Clara and Cynthia shedding a tear, but for distinctly different reasons. Honestly, I don't recall if Cynthia's sister was in the loop on Wyatt's efforts against the Drazan? I can imagine after Wyatt recovers, him being called to see the Prince. He arrives and finds that all the one's in the know (Woodshaft Miracle) are there, including Cynthia's sister (if she doesn't know about the Miracle at Woodshaft, but does now). All of them being read-in on Wyatt's traumas.
Cynthia's sister stands up and claims knowledge of Woodshaft and his traumas. . . saying in front of everyone, Wyatt Staples, you will always have a seat in my House (as a Knight). The Prince then stands up, and says "No, Wyatt will not be a Knight." "Wyatt Staples has shown again and again he cares not for House.""His loyalties have always been to the best ideals of the Principality."
"Wyatt Staples, the Principality is not a House or a Person. The ideals of the Principality need to be remembered. I value your opinion and respect what you have accomplished . . . and I wish you to continue."
"Wyatt Staples, you were born a Commoner yet you will never be of a Noble House. You advise us with your opinions, you amaze us with your feats, you value Commoner and Noble alike. Wyatt Staples, born a Commoner will be a member of every Noble House. Wyatt Staples, you will be known as Lord Protector of the Principality" . . ."now get to your training!"

God damn, talk about an villain arc story, i am surprised Wyatt haven't try to overthrow/assassinated the nobility of his home in the history
I think in one of the other chapters he mentions that other than the Drazzan and Pirates he only hates those (commoners and nobles) who basically do bad things, he certainly doesn't hate the Princess or Cynthia, he even feels guilty when he thinks of them as "Blue Bloods" feeling that calling them this is an insult . I still think that sooner or later he will end up as a knight (at least) not that he doesn't deserve the honor but because Clara and Cynthia will decide that the only way he can reach his full potential is if he is not effectively shackled by his thoughts of being a worthless commoner
@@davidorf3921 his trauma is evident, but he already cope with it, as it shows in the chapter that he is talking with his brother that, going to space is not about searching revenge in a fight, but he have full permission to be angry if anything else, but then again, this long ass 30 min chapter is part 1 still, whatever happened, I think helped manager his sanity instead of going full joker, but I think he will earn nobility, but he will protest to it fervently along the way I think

@@viniciuslopesmodena Oh yes there will certainly be a protest but I expect it to go something along the lines of (Prince or Princess) "You have proven once again by your words and actions that you are worthy of further reward blah blah blah, we therefore dub the a knight " Wyatt "But I'm just a dirty commoner" (Prince or princess) "Not anymore, your deeds and actions place you above many nobles, arise sir Wyatt" - Wyatt has a lot of potential, the Prince had already told Redford to train him for a command roll (breaking just about all the rules regarding putting commoners above nobility) and now Wyatt has not only demonstrated he's almost certainly the best fighter pilot they have, which everyone will soon know, but also that he can command a much larger vessel and inspire nobles to obey his orders (which will I suspect be kept very secret) The Prince really only has two choices, knight or otherwise ennoble him, or kill him as a threat to the current order. Since he owes Wyatt a huge favour (that gets bigger all the time) I think that sooner or later Wyatt will at the very least end up as a knight, probably one of house Astor's and likely on the Princess's personal staff. He may depending on how long the author keeps writing end up with a higher title but for that we have to wait and see, as it is so far the author has pretty much written a full length novel at nearly 100,000 words
doctirine seems strong and Wyatt still has his family if he initiated a coup against better-trained nobles on the off chance he fails or even at the chance he succeeds his family will be executed as first thing. These nobles are galactic size after all there is always a relative or a smaller house to take care of things or a rival one to usurp the now empty land.

The day Wyatt stands atop a hill made out of the bodies of nobles... that's a day I cannot wait for. For all the interesting stories that can be written in settings with space monarchies, the only worthwhile ones are the ones that end with such systems of governance taken down, nobles and royals all getting rid off. I like Clara and Redford but they are what they are, oppressors.
Only time will tell!

Why do I have the terrible feeling Wyatt is going to be a lone survivor? If not of his class then at least his friend group...
I think Wyatt might meet up with one or 2 of his classmates and prove to them that he did make it as a pilot.

I do think there will be more survers from that ship than just Wyatt but probably 98-99% of the people on the ship will either die or be taken away by the Drazin.

Not a fan of this side story, but I love the main storyline.

This feels an odd question, but I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts on whether or not there's any significance to all of the names that begin with "W" in this episode. They've grouped the kids alphabetically? The author is a fan of the 60's movie "It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world"?
I'm thoroughly enjoying this story and remain convinced that the author is published beyond simply on Reddit or TH-cam.
My guess is they were always seated/lined up/etc. alphabetically by first name at school, which is how they got to know each other in the first place.

25 minutes in, I'm going to guess that the ship is intentionally meant to feed the Drazan, even without the noble's guaranteed betrayal, the kids are an offering, and that's why the crew are distant. This is presumably the cause of the entire rebellion, previous king was secretly offering children to the Drazan, the uncle found out and couldn't accept it

Didn’t know this was being written in real time.. and didn’t know you were personally invested in the story. But since that is the case, I’ll give you a little feedback. This chapter is mostly just a bunch of filler… nobody, especially Wyatt would give so much detail and preamble when telling about their experience with the Drazan… 15 minutes of meaningless dialogue between the kids until we get to the drazan…it’s well written and I like the story, but it seems like a whole other story started being told.

I have enjoyed the storyline for the most part. However, this chapter went too far into the weeds to explain Wyatt’s hate for Drazzan. All of the children’s names began with a “W”, even “Aunt Wumu”; seriously. Halfway through this chapter, all of the little details of the children’s interaction with each other became annoying and felt like “unnecessary filler”. Only in the last five minutes did the chapter get back on track with the storyline.
It was indeed necessary to add more weight to what happened next. Also, the reveal of the "W" on the names will come soon.
