Part of the problem with the M2 and possibly even the M3 is that the M1 is just so good. I have an original M1 Mac Mini and it's still just amazing. I don't know what in the world I'd be upgrading for. Once you get into the M-series chips, 95% of people have their needs met, and it's only a small segment of professionals that can leverage the new, better chips. I think Apple might see low sales for a few years until the turnover cycle really starts.
I had an M1 MacBook Air, upgraded to M1 Pro MBP. Honestly it depends on your work. I was fine with M1 MacBook Air, because I was doing photoshop stuff, but I started doing some 3D work and it requires more performance. M1 is generally good for productivity and basic gaming, but once you do more than that you may want to upgrade.
My 16” M1 Pro is still killing it for everything that I do and can’t see a reason to upgrade until it self destructs some day. For users like me that are not rendering video, there’s little reason to to get the latest and greatest so save some money on M1 and M2, they are awesome machines. All depends on what you do with it.
this is such a good / great point. I was able tp get an m1 16” max with 64gb for 2299 new. It works great. Can not imagine what else an m2 / m3 would do for me. I do adobe / fcp and it makes beautiful graphic design music:). The idea that each m chip was going to have big leeps each time was probably not realistic. We will see. Part of the thing too is when you watch all these videos you think you need the latest / greatest and in the end you really need to up your skill game.
Summary: - M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max may be released at the same time in a few weeks - The base configurations may start with 12gb RAM instead of 8 - All the information we got is about the amount of cores, not about how they improved (or not) the cores themselves - Apple may use TSMC's N3E process (3nm) - Some M3 iMacs may be released soon this year - M3 Max may have similar performance to M2 Ultra (that's the maths Max Tech did) Sorry if it's unclear, or inexact, if there's anything wrong or I missed something tell me and I'll update the comment.
It's not in a few weeks, it's on Monday. We already know what the cores are like, they are the same cores from A17 Pro, only probably clocked a bit higher and with the option to overclock further on desktops and the 16" MacBook Pro with M3 Max. And N3E isn't ready yet, so they won't be using that if they are released on Monday.
@@jronmantech if it happens to be released this year or early next year, I doubt it. Max Tech stated months ago that M3 should have been M2, but since the manufacturing process (3nm) got delayed, they had to make a « Better M1 » instead of a completely new SoC. I bet the production is already finished and Thunderbolt 5 was not even announced at that moment. To sum it up, I doubt it.
This is what I've been thinking, but it is also possible that, due to yield issues, or possibly other reasons like saving the core increase for next year or cutting down on power consumption, they're disabling two of the GPU cores, which would be why we get the leaks saying 10. It's also entirely possible that the 10 core GPU leaks we're seeing are the binned chips which will only be in the base iMac and MacBook Air - the equivalent of the current 8 core GPU M2.
The reason for Apple pushing this event is because of the snapdragon arm chip for laptop. Developed by ex Apple designer, it claims to be more powerful than m2 chip, use less power while be more powerful than m2 max chip, and with a much lower starting price. The main reason for people to buy a Mac is its performance, and nothing on the market deliver this much power at this price. But everything will change in 2024, and Apple have to show the world that Apple is still the boss.
Same here. A17pro in the iPhone 15 Pro Max with 3nm proved to be a scaled marginal increase over its predecessor A16. M3 with 3nm will be marginal as well. Trust me, marginal gains over the M2 Max with the selling point being 3nm. Battery life will be a bump too.
The same. I was so excited about space grey first time around but now it would feel little boring and silver feels nice again. But if they release midnight Pro, I might take that one.
With Mac sales already down in recent years It would be interesting if they could do an every other year release on the new chips and possibly break even or even make more with actually legitimate upgrades.
i have a 2016 touchbar mbp. i have pushed it to the end of its life. was about to impulse buy an m2 mac. so glad i came across an article about the possible release of m3 macs. i have had only 2 mac in my life and bouth my first one in high school 2011. That one lasted me till 2016 and my second one is still fully functional. i basically got brand new insides for it in 2021 because of the butterfly keyboard issue. my 2016 mac is surprisingly good still despite my heavy workload, i just want something new and faster.
What they need to upgrade is The Screen to an OLED. It's super obvious, & it should've been done w/ the M1. Make it the best at everything.. it's a no brainer.
I don't understand the mentions of shortages of existing Macs. When I checked iMacs and a few M2 MacBook Pros on the Apple Store a few days ago, they only had 3-day waits, not a month+.
High end professionals and general technophiliacs will be the bulk of m3 sales, which will still be low IMO - despite critiques of m2 family chips, they (along with M1 still) are more than capable of doing what most people need at this time, even myself as a photographer. If correct though, the more interesting thing to me will be the change in RAM module, starting at 12GB definitely has some appeal.
I do get tired of the "RIP Windows Laptops" bull. Windows is a tool that many many people and companies use. Since Windows no longer runs on Apple hardware (unless you have the ability to be a Windows insider and buy the right VM software...), Windows laptops will never be RIP. Sensationalism sucks. I have 50% Windows PC's and 50% Macs. I am very much versed in PC hardware.
M3 will sell great if the base RAM is 12GB and base storage is 512GB of storage. One reason why sales may suck is that the base models just aren’t good enough and it costs a lot to get something decent.
They’ve only just added 120hz mini LED screens with ProMotion into MBP. They’re one of the best screens available on any laptop ever. There is no need for anything new for a long time screen wise.
Apple may have cornered itself with their M-series marketing strategy. Because before when they had Intel for the most part you just bought whatever was the newest computer when you needed a new one. But now Apple has pushed the MacBook into a market where people see each product refresh as a generational upgrade and where consumers are way more hesitant to upgrade if they think something new is around the corner.
That's because all Intel MacBooks were essentially the same from 2012 to 2019, with only marginal performance increases and a few nice extra features. What did it matter if they were about to release a new model when it would be almost exactly the same as the current one? But now we're actually getting performance increases. *although*, I'm not sure if this mentality is true of everyone. I think it's quite possibly only us few who can be found in places like this. I don't think the average MacBook buyer cares if their new laptop has M2 or M3.
People aren’t buying m2 because their m1 works just fine. Also, the economy isn’t exactly hot right now so if m1 does fine then why spend more? Mass consumers don’t care about the 50% spec bump when they can get what they’re working on done with their older laptop.
Do we think Apple will release the Vision Pro for $3,500 with last gen M2 processors? Could the vanilla binned M3 be heading to their headset range first then roll it out into the Mac mini and MacBook Air ranges later in the year?
I imagine we'll get updated specs in the actual release Vision Pro from what they said when it was announced. Though if this is the case I don't know why they would specify an M2 chip.
I hope this signifies a switch to high-end first SoC releases. I never understood why Apple had to lead with the low end especially when new process yields would not favour this and base M-series would have to compete with iPhones. Maybe an M3 Ultra/Extreme event? Apple needs a better workstation for Vision Pro content development, the Studios haven't quite cut it.
You’re completely wrong with gpu being minor update. Have you not heard about hardware raytracing? It’s 100% confirmed because of the iphone chip and will be 2-3x boost for many workflows most likely. Do you not know what it is or why are you not talking about it?
Ive been waiting to buy my first Macbook Pro 14in M2 chip. Does this mean the price of that will drop? I’ve held off hoping it drop a little below 2500$ since that’s a bit much.
You neglect to mention that when the soldered in SSD on these computers fails, you have a pretty paperweight. You will need to replace the entire motherboard including the SOC just to get a new SSD, and you will never get any data off the old SSD. I like the new SOCs from Apple, but I won't purchase anything from any company that disrespects their customers like this.
Can't wait for the m3 max, and in black even better, As a content creator I need the fastest portable mac, and the performance may be worthy, not like the previous fiascos. Best
There is NO WAY in the universe Apple will present the M3 Pro and Max before it presents the M3. Whoever claims that has no understanding of how Apple works (they have always loved the "dulcis in fundo" method, Steve Jobs docet, remember his "one more thing"?). By now the pattern Apple uses for its releases is pretty consolidated and clear to everyone, so I kind of had it with these alleged Gurman and Kuo rumors, they always get things wrong, make a living and are followed by gazillions of people for claims that are either pure smoke, or so obvious that we shouldn't even bother calling them rumors.
Maybe it’s not such a surprise that Apple is not delaying the release of the M3 - Qualcomm and everybody’s uncle is jumping into ARM. But Qualcomm especially is saying they are beating Apple handily.
I was going to get the base model Mac Studio for content creation and video editing, but if the new 16-inch MacBook Pro comes out with M3 Pro , it's probably a better buy assuming the ports and memory config are the same as the current 16-inch MBP
I may be totally wrong, but I think the major focus with M3 is going to be GPU. You don't mention at all hardware raytracing that is 100% coming to M3. With this feature alone, Apple can focus big time on GPU performance and gaming. We will soon find out!
Is there any possibilty that a macbook could also get m3 ULTRA option? That could be a gamechanger. I dont see reasons to not making ultra chip in macbook if the 3 nanometer version is already so small in size.
My M1 Max with 32 GBs of RAM is starting to feel limited based on the ram limitation of what I bought…not for normal stuff but when pushing it in FCP with effects, etc. I was holding out for an M3 Ultra Studio, but this M3 Max may scratch the upgrade itch.
It’s not like people don’t buy M2 chips because of the performance… regular people DON’T EVEN CARE about this stuff.. The thing is that M1 came in 2020-2021, most people don’t upgrade every year and M1 performance was excellent and still is… I guess Apple needs to create a different strategy or gimmick to market these new chips, so people feel like they are actually something new and their M1 products are old: Maybe gaming focus, touch screens, new accesories and compatibility, hardware features… Overall PC market is down because most of the people bought computers during covid 2020-2021, and they are still working fine…
CPU binning goes both ways. You can “bin” the higher performance parts. The bin isn’t necessarily a rubbish bin, but rather a collection of like for like performing parts. Binning due to poor performance is what’s mentioned here. You can get CPUs that are binned as higher performance, like what intel does with their K series, or other special edition chips.
It's amazing how dated and stupid the notch design looks. Every time I see it. Look at other laptops.. thin bezels all around (as if 1mm thinner or thicker bezels makes any kind of difference). The notch is literally a cutout in your workspace. That's insane. It was insane a few years ago and remains insane today. An inconvenience and eyesore to the consumer, for the sake of branding. The egregious disrespect is nauseating. I loath the fact that my next laptop for the next decade will have a freaking notch on my screen... with no way of getting rid of it. My backgounds? notch. My menu bar? notch. My screen savers? NOTCH.
Honestly the only reason why I'm hesitating to buy a mac is because storage is so freakin expensive. It's ridiculous. And it's not even because of a lack of budget. I just refuse to pay these prices. Other than that Macs are great machines and I will surely buy one should storage ever become cheaper.
isnt macbook air m3 coming!! for sure it will come too as m3 series.. just as m2 series were launched with all air and pros models just as same in case off m1 macbooks
I am tired of the more cores equals more better approach with Apple silicon. I want significant clock speed improvements. Apple is nearly 2 ghz lower than the competition in some cases.
If the M3 Pro and Max will came with that specifications its possible that the M3 will have instead fewer change don't only for differentiate it from the rest, but even to perform well in computer without fan. While if the difference between the M3 and the M3 Pro will be limited its possible that they must lower the clock for avoid too much heat. So its possible that the new M3 will be only have a marginal increase in performance respect the previous one. Maybe 10-15%.
If it’s merely because of looks, a matte black laptop is something I’d buy. Now, if I didn’t have my current MacBook Pro M1 Max, 32GB of RAM then I would buy it and seek for the best specs. Let see what Apple brings on this event.
Would we still expect to see a GPU upgrade, even if the amount of cores remain almost the same? If this chip is based off the new Iphone chip, I'd be expecting considerably more powerful GPU cores...
Well the leaks we're seeing are for a 10 core M3 chip, but usually the M series (and previously the A-X series) doubles the number of cores from the A series, which leads me to believe that the 10 core leak may be for the binned M3 which will be in base models of the iMac and MacBook Air. Though, even if that is not the case, I'd expect to see a decent performance bump as well as much better MetalFX upscaling performance due to the 2x faster neural engine and I expect new AAA games to run even better due to the addition of new features like hardware mesh shaders and hardware ray tracing (if ray tracing already existed at all in a game, it can now be offloaded to the dedicated hardware leaving more performance on the table).
I think they will more than likely release a 13 inch M3 pro with the updated chassis...in a 13.6 screen size. If they would only just do away with the touchbar though.
The biggest problem they are having is these updates really don’t make any sense. If you bought an m1 Mac. There really isn’t a point in upgrading. They want to sell more, throw in a touch screen.. but then that will kill off the iPad.. it’s just a unique situation they are in.
M series have been capable of game this how time, the only problem is software compatibility. If your talking about high end graphics then the only thing holding it back would be ray tracing support which the iPhones just got so I would assume the macs would too
The issue with these new MacBooks is that the memory isn't long-term upgradeable, and Apple's frequent system upgrades eat up large gigabytes of RAM. After updating to Sonoma, my display went dark, and I had to use Apple Configurator to fix it.
Regular Mac users don't have the need to upgrade their Macbooks in less than 5 years except for some professionals. That's why Apple is pushing Mac gaming right now to drive up people's need to upgrade their Mac's graphical performance like what PC gamers do.
I believe the mac pro will get a faster chip giving it an advantage over the mac studio to justify the cost. In any case I'm going to trade my m1 for the m3.
That would make the most sense. It will only be the Mac Pro that could feasibly be described as “Scary Fast” as it should always be the biggest fastest of the line up.
What if there is no M3? They currently have four tiers, M2, M2P, M2M and M2U. What if they reduce this to just 3 tiers? With the Pro becoming the base model? This would simplify the supply chain, and offer a compelling upgrade performance wise to all the current base models that use the standard M1 & M2 chips? It also justifies a price increase on the base models across the lineup.
With the iPad rumored to get a super bright OLED display, if these don't have OLED displays then I'll have to get an iPad instead, or maybe wait for a 2024 macbook display upgrade.
Apart from the much shipping dates, the refurbished apple store in my area is totally empty since the beginning of Oct when i checked. Its obvious apple is pushing all the sale towards the new m3.
If the m3 gpu doesnt bring significance in speed gains it is DOA as well. I will just wait for M4. Im still on M1. If the SSD is slow like m2 on some models it will be DOA. Apple needs to perfect these devices since they have zero upgrade paths and you are stuck with what you buy no replacements for ram or ssd since it is soldered.
I remember people dishing naming of Sony phones. These namings are weird. So Pro Iphone is better than Max, but Max M3 is better than Pro M3. I still forget from time to time the hierearchy of which is better. 😂 And then there is Ultra (or at least there was and perhaps will be in the future). Apple should make Iphone Ultra as well, and make it the worst Iphone if all just for fun. 😂

M1 still amazing. Apple is suffering from success. I could buy a new maxed out MacBook but my M1 Pro is just enough for what I need it lol
M1 is awesome. Trouble is they’re obligated to improve on it every year because that’s what everyone else does.
Any news on iPads?
Yeah, Apple News is on iPads 😂
Can't wait for the m3 max, and in black even better, As a content creator I need the fastest portable mac, and the performance may be worthy, not like the previous fiascos. Best
A Matte Black MacBook Pro that would make me want to buy one.
12gb ram seems odd, but if the chip fits why not. People will still complain it needs to start at 16gb, but meh!
Still Prefere my Core 2 Duo 🥰
Maybe they will take the approach they use on iPhones from now on: release the Pro models and chips first
What about ray tracing?
Maybe it’s not such a surprise that Apple is not delaying the release of the M3 - Qualcomm and everybody’s uncle is jumping into ARM. But Qualcomm especially is saying they are beating Apple handily.
All I want is an imac with a pro chip in it. Would even get an m1 pro 😅
Will there be an m3 MacBook Air?
NOOOOOOOOOO, I just bought an 15inch macbook air for 4 month. next year! pls!
New base model M chips always come out end of year. It may be next year before the 15” gets a refresh though given how short it’s been since release.
We will soon find out!
i think apple would add the ray tracing engines like the a17 pro which is a big deal!
Is there any possibilty that a macbook could also get m3 ULTRA option? That could be a gamechanger. I dont see reasons to not making ultra chip in macbook if the 3 nanometer version is already so small in size.
The die size is still way too big to fit in a Macbook, mainly the heatsink and cooling solution is going to be more than Apple can fit in.
Maybe “scary fast” is MacBook Pro getting M2 Ultra
My M1 Max with 32 GBs of RAM is starting to feel limited based on the ram limitation of what I bought…not for normal stuff but when pushing it in FCP with effects, etc. I was holding out for an M3 Ultra Studio, but this M3 Max may scratch the upgrade itch.
I can't wait to see these devices!!
I hope you’re right about these performance gains but I don’t see it happening yet.
I’m just waiting for a MacBook with built in 5G for true go anywhere
m3 mac mini immediate buy, will be interestingly fast
I'm so excited for the news.
It’s not like people don’t buy M2 chips because of the performance… regular people DON’T EVEN CARE about this stuff.. The thing is that M1 came in 2020-2021, most people don’t upgrade every year and M1 performance was excellent and still is… I guess Apple needs to create a different strategy or gimmick to market these new chips, so people feel like they are actually something new and their M1 products are old: Maybe gaming focus, touch screens, new accesories and compatibility, hardware features… Overall PC market is down because most of the people bought computers during covid 2020-2021, and they are still working fine…
i don't get it, if macbook only support one external monitor how will the hub support 3 monitors?
Cause the hub is using the same one port and can drive 3 through that where the Mac can only drive one on it when directly connected
I had to return my m2 max because of lacking support for nested virtualization. You cant run android emulators in parallels windows
NOTCH.
You had me at possible 12GB RAM iPad Pro
It isn't beating anyone without gaming capabilities
The biggest problem they are having is these updates really don’t make any sense. If you bought an m1 Mac. There really isn’t a point in upgrading. They want to sell more, throw in a touch screen.. but then that will kill off the iPad.. it’s just a unique situation they are in.
Will m3 max be gaming capable?
M series have been capable of game this how time, the only problem is software compatibility. If your talking about high end graphics then the only thing holding it back would be ray tracing support which the iPhones just got so I would assume the macs would too
Thanks for the updates, you guys always do a great job, where would we be without you??? Thanks
The issue with these new MacBooks is that the memory isn't long-term upgradeable, and Apple's frequent system upgrades eat up large gigabytes of RAM. After updating to Sonoma, my display went dark, and I had to use Apple Configurator to fix it.
2:57 but M1/M2 used 2 ram chips to get 8 GB of memory, so to get 12 GB on M3 they'll have to use 2x6 GB chips.
Apple Pencil supported Trackpads (the standalone one and the macbooks's ones)
Apple mouse new design
Everything USB-C.
Here is my bet !
I need them airs though!
Bring the 27 inch mac please so I can donate my 2015 one
of course they are gonna release the regular m3
Regular Mac users don't have the need to upgrade their Macbooks in less than 5 years except for some professionals. That's why Apple is pushing Mac gaming right now to drive up people's need to upgrade their Mac's graphical performance like what PC gamers do.
If it’s gonna have 12gb of ram and better drive speed definitely I’ll get one for me
I believe the mac pro will get a faster chip giving it an advantage over the mac studio to justify the cost.
I don't think they'd pull this, since the M3 is necessary for things like the iPad, which shouldn't be thermally suited for the M3 Pro.
they can put an M3 pro in an iPad, all you do is turn down the clock speed till it fits the thermal envelope. @@TheFingerMove
I have a déjà-vu from last year ...
YT must have gotten the time stamps wrong
If the m3 gpu doesnt bring significance in speed gains it is DOA as well. I will just wait for M4. Im still on M1. If the SSD is slow like m2 on some models it will be DOA. Apple needs to perfect these devices since they have zero upgrade paths and you are stuck with what you buy no replacements for ram or ssd since it is soldered.
I want the Ultra chip in my MBP
I remember people dishing naming of Sony phones. These namings are weird. So Pro Iphone is better than Max, but Max M3 is better than Pro M3. I still forget from time to time the hierearchy of which is better. 😂 And then there is Ultra (or at least there was and perhaps will be in the future). Apple should make Iphone Ultra as well, and make it the worst Iphone if all just for fun. 😂
