  • The top and west coast of the South Island of New Zealand has been experiencing some insanely wet weather this past week, with many many roads cut off, underwater, covered by landslips, trees and mud, or roads totally being wiped out
This is in Marybank just out of Nelson on SH6
This was filmed by Gary Fieldes

It shows how strong the Rib Lock retaining wall can be in resisting the earth pressure. Yes it failed to stop the landslide but stood its place while soil tipped over.

It's clear that landslips in New Zealand are very polite and well mannered; moving carefully around homes 🏡 and street boundaries wherever possible. They merely want to travel a little bit, see some new sights and level the playing fields . . .

Most kiwis don't have a clue this is going on. Some of our oldest and largest stations are being sold ashore for millions just to benefit rich foreigners who don't even live here.

@@thepointlesstroll5702 when you see the root systems of a 30-40+ year old native tree you'd think otherwise. It may or may not be the answer but with the amount of landslides we've been having over the last 20 years and far more frequent in recent years its going to be a financial burden on the country to keep clearing roads, home, railways tracks etc constantly in the future.

The lady who bought my rental chopped down all the euc's separating the two houses on the property, one above the other. I suspect the two houses will meet sometime soon (it's clay type soil like in the video).

I live in Australia yet it means little these days when people are ripping the sentiment from under us and the vale and long term stability. Making floods and then driving people out of their lives as a way to rezone and rezone or steal the land for device purposes. When the land tries to run for it things are bad!

Do you think this is a case of building a road through the side of a hill and then not building adequate retaining structures to prevent land slippage? From what I've seen around NZ, the nature of the islands land mass means it must have many roads built on steep hill and mountain sides. And where these 'rivers of rain' strike is rather like random artillery fire - it's Russian Roulette - and when one does inevitably hit Wellington, the carnage created by one metre (or more) of rain will be on par with a major earthquake ... what's more, they'll hit with far greater frequency than earthquakes.

Notice how the hill slides only in the area where there is a retaining wall.

The retaining wall remained in place, although it couldn't retain very much of this.

The support wall did its job. I was expecting it to give way and the mountain to come down right after.

I’m a geologist. That’s what we would call a slump. Not big or fast enough to be a landslide.
And yea I realize technically correct is the most annoying form
Of correct. Cool video. Saw that happen to homes built poorly on landfill on a slope. Basically the builder built homes on a slope that was a reclaimed creek bed. All the new soil slid down the hill with the houses. Builder got sued, we did the testing.

Shout out to the retaining wall. Held back the earth faithfully for years until it could not bare the strain any longer.

I hope all ended OK for them. I'd be planting a lot of deep rooting shrubs and trees on that type of land, with Eucalyptus on the flatter areas separately.
