I agree about the dancing. Hopefully her difficulty level can catch up to her artistry.
Her dance was definitely nice, however, she was performing at Gymnastics competition, not a dance competition... The athleticism, tumbling passes, acrobatic moves is what should've been memorable about her performance, not the dance or the makeup... I mean, she's famous (infamous rather) for her makeup here, not her performance.

@@NYCBlonde You seem not to know the difference between a competition and a gala. This is a competition--The European FX final to be precise at that. Though the routine itself was incredible and even beat the likes of Angelina Melnikova, the make-up is absolutley inappropriate for it's setting.
@rene ruiz Firstly, it's quite clear that if any one of us is a child here it is yourself. No self-respecting adult would go around the place addressing people the way you addressed me in this thread due to a difference of opinion, as they can see how immature and uncivilised that sort of behaviour is.
Secondly, my original post is quite self-explanatory. This is a European final, not a gala. If anything I think the FIG needs to come down equally as hard on male teammates of Van Gerner's such as Bart Deurloo and Casimir Schmidt. Who continually cover their bodies with tattoos and (in the case of Schmidt) have even competed internationally with blue-green hair. There is a time and a place for everything, but international elite competition is not the place for the above.
I’m honestly sad she didn’t do a cat leap in her routine. Would have fit the choreo and gotten counted as an element 😂

The makeup is based (as the song is) off the musical cats. Very famous musical.. you may not like the makeup but it is there for a reason
This is something that you very rarely see in artistic gymnastics: an unique routine that actually stands out.
So many people hate this because it is different. It is artistic gymnastics. Its art. There is more than one way to do art. Gymnastics routines are all the same now and days with no variety.
We don't hate we just don't like it. We appreciate the uniqueness and creativity but she lacks the technicalities of a gymnast on a floor routine.

So they want themed music and dances, and a song to match and when someone does it all together with a great concept they focus on her lack of glitter compared to other gymnasts? I dont understand every 4 years at the oylimpics they look like they bathe in glitter now someone does artistic makeup and they get a new rule about them? Women gymnasts should do whatever they want in their routine in protest to preform how they want

this is not a musical, this is sport, called artistic gymnastics. I HATE her make-up, she could be a nice young lady whithout it. I do not like this routine, this is a show, not gymnastics.
And you can't base an Artistic Gymnastics routine on a musical?? If the sport has a connection with any musical, it's Cats!! The way of movement gymnasts use, is very similar to the, bendy and athletic, movement of cats!! I think it's a brilliant and bold choice for a floor routine!! She doesn't have her full difficulty back because she's recovering from an injury so she might as well have some fun until she's fully ready to include more things and get a proper routine back. Stop acting like the sky is falling, it's just one floor routine at Euros, eventually she'll follow the normal expectations for floor routines once she gets stronger and is ready. If she didn't have the damn face makeup nobody would have noticed enough to bitch about it.
I hope she keeps the theme because it's bloody fantastic.

Meg Beth I honestly wish cat leaps and other jumps and leaps would make comebacks. Everyone does the same jumps and leaps nowadays. But I love that Celine has a sense of humor at least about her routine

I absolutely love this. We have just done CATS the musical and I always thought the jellicle ball music would of been great as gymnastic floor music then suddenly this popped up in my recommended. Fantastic routine and well executed.
I’m insanely in love with this music I could watch it over and over again and not be ashamed nor tired of it.

We have gymnasts trying to be “sexy” and doing stupid crap and THIS gets a bad rep? It’s make-up that goes with the theme of her immaculate routine. Simone’s stupid kiss at the end of her routine should be getting far more hatred.

overall, I enjoyed it and the make-up seems more subtle here than I remember in still images so I don't find it distracting at all.

Soooo artistic! So beautiful, theatrical, fun! I love it! I wish we had more of artistic gymnastics nowadays, instead of jumps after jumps after jumps. It’s beautiful being so skilled, but dancing and theatrical movements are soooo amazing to be seen on floor exercises too ❤️

I’ve worked in live theatre for many years and this is art and she’s a very talented gymnast. With that being said, not many would have recognized that song from “Cats” and would have wondered what she was trying to do.

I don't really mind about the makeup, what I feel sorry for is that the makeup is more memorable than the performance itself... compared to the elaborated tumbling passes and complex routines I see nowadays in gymnastics; her routine (I believe) didn't look complicated or difficult, it was mostly dance moves... And it is gymnastics competition, so the lack of gymnastics skills performed is what I find problematic.
Not a fan of the makeup but this routine will be great once she fully recovers from her injury and can add back in her other tumbling passes

Sandra GM I don’t believe there’s any kind of rule about makeup at this point which is odd considering there are rules about less noticeable things like not having your nails painted, not having your bra strap exposed, not having messy hair. I know there are rules about it for NCAA. I don’t know if they would go so far as to ban stage makeup like this in elite gymnastics unless it catches on and a bunch of people start to do it which I really don’t see happening. Celine made it sound in her recent interview that this was a one time thing that she did because she was injured so I doubt she’ll bring out the makeup again. Also, it sounds like the gymnasts who were training with her before finals weren’t to impressed by her makeup so I don’t think anyone will be following in her footsteps anytime soon
MissMuppetLover that's why I'm surprised, there are rules for the nails and the bra straps. I think people are overreacting, Celine did amazing and I appreciate something different just for fun. She's not trying to start a trend and she was aware of the low difficulty, so why not enjoy the routine for what it is in this context?

@@sandrajyg1999 there wasn't a rule until Van Gerner's Cats-inspired act. Right after this performance, they made an official rule which forbids non-standard makeup, sadly :/
I think the discussion here is not whether it is beautiful, impressive or not. The code of points prices the gymnast tumbling skills and connection skills between the elements, of course it has to be artistic and nice to see (that gives the impression of control, selfconfidence), but lets distinguish between a gymnastic performance and musical, theater or circus performance, they are very beautiful and i like them a lot and they don´t deserve to be criticised but they are a complete differnt world. If she was priced for her performance despite her tumbling skills gymnastics could take the completely wrong path. There are a lot of good artists, they already have their place and I hope high skilled gymnast can keep their own.
muchas personas dicen que utilizo caracterizacion para eclipsar lo facil de sus ejercicios! lo veo y para nada veo que sea distractor, solo es maquillaje el cabello solo se recogio dos chongos, o diran que en la epoca de los 70's los listones y moños de Maria Filatova los distraian?! fuera del maquillaje lo demas es normal, el leotardo es emblematico de su pais no es un disfraz de nada, asi que IDK lo que digan los jueces y la FIG esta rutina rompio esquemas para siempre y es maravilloso ver por fin gimnastas haciendo algo artistico. podria mencionar algunas que parecian cartones pero ya deben saber todos quienes son.

still it was displayed very well and entertaining
2 is the minimum, 4 is the max. Generally people use 4 because tumbling passes award the highest difficulty on floor. But Ellie Downie won the European AA title in 2017 with only 3 passes in hers. So much like this routine it's all down to strategy.

TWO tumbling passes? I am all for creativity but this is all makeup and no substance. To everyone saying “THIS is artistic gymnastics”: gymnastics is a balance between jumps, spins, dance, and tumbling at the core. This is a great dance routine but an absurd gymnastics routine. I think everyone is praising it because it is so unique but it’s just it’s not an elite gymnastics floor routine.

She was injured. Her makeup had nothing to do with the lack of difficulty, if anything it added an extra layer of artistry to compensate. Perhaps if you did your research you'd be less of a pompous ass.

I know my comment is late, but I think she and the dutch gymnasts in General are gorgeous. If you don't like artistic routines than don't watch them. Everyone has his own preferences. American gymnasts are all difficulty and zero artistry and dutch gymnasts are less difficulty and lots of artistry. It's simple
I was going to upvote your comment until you bashed American gymnasts. Dutch gymnastics are gorgeous--full stop. You don't have to put down one type of gymnast to praise another. Plenty of American gymnasts are artistic.

Nobody said that they're not gorgeous, cause in terms of difficulty and technique obviously the USA gymnasts are for sure the best, but in my comment I just expressed my personal taste. In floor routines I like not only acrobatic skills, but also artistry and creative interpretation of the music and I don't find these stuff in american floor routines.
Gymnasts of today are under a lot of pressure to perform a routine with high difficulty, to score high and bring home the medals. It 's a breath of fresh air to see a routine that is different from what we see every day. I hope this gymnast is recovered in time for Tokyo so she can show us what she is capable of.

Milla she's still recovering from injury. She's working on more difficulty, but right now that's what she could do well. It paid off thanks to clean execution, but the routine is supposed to be upgraded in next months

I don't understand everyone attacking everyone for their "personal" opinion, to each their own!
These comment sections are beyond ridiculous at times! It's sad we live in a world where people just can't agree to disagree! I know the world isn't perfect, but it's only that way because of its people! Animals have more respect and boundaries for each other, other than survival! But a majority of us (humans) go straight for the kill, for what? Do be right? Do make our "personal" opinions correct or valid? Ludacris! Try to have self control and most of all respect for the differences of others!
I myself can see both sides of the spectrum here! I think the choreography brilliantly fits the music score, it's exciting and different; but on the other hand I also feel the styling is a bit juvenile for "womens" gymnastics! But I think that's because it is theatrical! I do understand it's "artistic" gymnastics and theater is a form of art, however for me the whole package is better suited for a Gala! I honestly thought I was watching an exhibition, not an "elite" routine! However my opinion could change once she's back to full health, and her tumbling is more advanced! The tiniest adjustments can actually make a big difference! And for the simple fact I love the choreography and music, but not so much the tumbling or make up, I have hope I could eventually love the whole thing! Like I said, "tiniest adjustments"! After all I am entitled to change my mind, we all are!
I just want to end with the fact that most of us watching these videos and commenting have one thing in common, we love gymnastics! Try to focus on the positive commanality we have with each other, not the differences! We are all individuals!

To most of the people who complained about her lack of difficulty I would like to see them do those tumbles because I know I can’t.
It is so ridiculous. I'm happy it is banned. 4th place was generous.
I don’t understand why other countries didn’t pay attention to this (maybe minus Russia) and follow suit in their floor routines. Obviously I mean the character and commitment to artistry, not the makeup, which was banned. This routine got an 8.7 e score!! She got 4th at Euros with a 4.6 d, like the US needs to realize there are other ways of getting competitive scores on floor besides packing in tumbling. I love good tumbling, but I also love artistry and dance. This is honestly one of my favourite floor routines of all time. We miss you Celine!
If you want the Americans to do better at dancing, don’t be a hypocrite and ignore that these the other countries gymnast need to up their difficulty to try to medal and win. Keep it both ways.
