I stumbled across this channel a few weeks back, inspired me to do a walk on the downs, turned into a 22 miler. This is a great channel so calming and relaxing, Tweedy is such a great chap.
First off some thank yous! Thank you for the shoutouts in this video and also thank you for prompting me to look at my editing software after your recent upload in the Tweedy Misc format. I’ve subsequently learnt how to sync clips shot on two cameras without having to manually match the vocals. It’s just right click and sync. Simples. Now! Very enjoyable to just do an unplanned outing and video like this. I must give it a try again! There’s something rewarding about ending up at places one knows, via new routes. Incredibly compact packing. Something I can never manage. That you produced a fine looking meal from such a small back pack, is a work of wonder to me!
Glad to hear you've discovered auto audio syncing - it is a kind of magic isn't it? It doesn't always work for me, for example it failed with the Hitchcock / Jilly Cooper bit here, probably because there was a lot of wind noise, and that tends to have a different effect on the audio from the GoPro internal mic compared with the lav mic on the external audio recorder I use... but it works for me most of the time. The South Downs Way has a sort of gravity that draws me back to it whenever I go for a walk in the area, and thereby I often end up at some familiar spots like Ditchling Beacon. The downside is of course that it has that effect on other people too! I managed to fit a tarp in that little bag too! Alas I didn't have an opportunity to use it this time, as the weather reminded doggedly fine. Which was very disappointing.

Very interesting and informative video. The night footage is great. I love it. Possibly a throw back from childhood when I would cling to the back of the front seats as my parents drove through darkened countryside. I wonder if that dew pond is a crater of a WW2 bomb meant for Brighton? I know a number did fall on the downs. I did see a collection of similar circular ponds in Germany which were a perhaps unwanted gift from allied bombing.
Thanks Liam! Yes country lanes in the dark can look quite eery! I recall as a child there was a TV advert which had scenes of a dark tree lined road (possibly an early one of those RAC "Knights of the Road" ads?) and I used to find it a bit scary! Nowadays I love being out in the countryside at night. A rare opportunity to be away from other people. It had never occurred to me that those dew ponds might be bomb craters! At least one of them in this area is covered by a Historic England listing, along with a (now barely visible) Iron Age hillfort - so I assume that pond at least could be fairly ancient.
@@tweedyoutdoors I spent almost four decades in mental health either assessing or consulting patients, or at case conferences, meetings, presentations etc, my wife had a similar high people content career in judiciary and then aviation. We now live in the wilds of Canada, rarely leave the property, see no one and love every minute.

But as another comment mentions Croatian wine, I remember enjoying a red wine from the Pelješac peninsula - the cheap and cheerful version with a donkey on the label can be found in some supermarkets here. I suspect the really good stuff is drunk in Dalmatia, possibly outdoors looking onto the sea.
Just wanted to thank you Tweedy for your videos :) me and my wife been dreaming to visit GB for a long time and your videos give us sooooo much perspective and landscape what we absolutely would love to see. And big thumbs up for the red wines for every video!
Really great to hear these videos provide inspiration! The South Downs is (are?) a spectacular landscape and better still Hassocks station (which is very close to the downs) is only about an hour by train from London.
Thank you, and glad you enjoyed the video! I walked the whole thing in 2018, but split it into chunks suitable for daytime walks and spread it out over several months. I think about 10 chunks in total. I loved it, and I've really enjoyed going back to the downs and revisiting many times since then.

It's always a bit disappointing for me when making these videos that I can't fully convey what it's like, given that digital cameras are never very good in low light conditions... but hopefully you got at least a bit of a sense of it here!
Fab little return walk. Your meal looked amazing and travelling light worked really well...the bonus of the veggie fish and chips at the outset was interesting. , I haven't tried that yet; I do tend to have the odd fish and chips despite not eating meat at all. I guess you were testing out your new tech. It was impressive to see; thanks Tweedy 👌

I completely agree - the South Downs is such a special part of the world. I'm not from there (although perhaps some ancestral memory as my Dad's side of the family were originally from Hampshire?) but it feels like a spiritual home to me.

Thank you! I've probably said it before but I love the way Belloc mythologises Sussex, particularly in the Four Men, as some sort of magical kingdom. Every time I go I'm amazed that somewhere only an hour or so from London is so stunning.

Hi John, Thoroughly enjoyed this unplanned escapade!! Really not sure what vegan fish and chips is, how do they know that particular fish only ate plants or didn't nibble on a bit of caviar occasionally, maybe I've misunderstood!! Lovely to see the tribute to the Indian soldiers who gave their lives in WW1. I think we forget how many soldiers from other parts of the globe fought with the British. I've been learning a huge amount about British Military history watching Chris Green, the history chap, I mention him because this week he did a video on the Great London Beer Flood of 1814. An amazing story. The pourable gell for your stove looks a really good idea, seemed to give off a lot of heat too. The cheese looked good as well. We are fortunate that our local supermarket, Mercadona, sell a smoked sheep's cheese which is truly excellent. They also do a really decent cheddar, so I'm quids in, or should that be pesetas in? Whilst you might not have caught the sunset the views of the sky were wonderful. Those clouds looked like the might have been made by your daughter!! Glad you made back down in the dark ok. All the best!!
Thanks David! The vegan fish was certainly interesting! Nice crunch to the batter, the interior thereof had a surprisingly realistic flakiness and did taste of the sea (I assume some kind of seaweed flavour?) ...but it was obviously not a perfect replica - a bit too uniform in shape, a little on the small side, and a bit dry compared to the real thing - albeit that is now a distant memory for me! Yes I was quite touched by the Chattri Memorial. I think it's a beautiful monument, particularly given the setting. I don't quite know what happened to the sunset there! It was looking promising just beforehand, then I went and hid in the gorse bush for a short while - albeit that I was occasionally poking my head out to check on the state of things - but it never really went very pink or orange. Perhaps it was just very brief and I missed it?

I always feel you are somehow channelling the spirit of Edward Thomas in your walks and had he been born into this digital age, You Tube vidoes such as those you make would have been (secondary to the written word) a natural medium for him.

It's a "FireDragon" stove from BCB, designed to take the blocks they make, but it also works with the gel fuel I used here. I think it did probably evolve from a hexi stove, and BCB do a lot of military stuff, so perhaps the army use these nowadays? I should probably have mentioned the foil tray in the video! I don't completely trust any of the scenery in the immediate vicinity of that dew pond - it all looks a bit too good to be true.
