Thank you Tweedy - I had a fantastic day "working" with you on this! After a heavy filming "schedule" it was a real treat to indulge in some wild cooking and fine wine on a freezing cold hilltop! I look forward to the next adventure.
Thank you for having me along! Yes it feels a bit ridiculous describing any of this as "work"! I quite liked this model of you doing the "serious" documentary video, and me essentially just coming along as the on-location catering service. A very fun day out, and let's hope your video gets you a bit closer to that magic 1k!
@@tweedyoutdoors thank you - that 1K seems so near, but so far! I can hear Mrs. WC21 (UK) Productions Ltd watching this video in the other room - I will no doubt be hearing about how she would have dealt with the mashed potato in due course!
Thanks Hedley! Mr WC21 really seems to have got the knack of appealing titles / thumbnails, and yet here I am still ploughing my own ridiculous furrow!
As you are a chap who's happy to cart a bucket full of ice up a hill for your sparkiling rose (totally understandable), may I recommend a moka pot for your post prandial coffee? My Bialetti knock off cost me a tenner (during lockdown when I was not allowed out for an espresso) and weighs a mere 237g empty. I fill the little coffee receptacle/filter thingy at home with freshly ground coffee, tuck it in my rucksack and and it's ready to brew whenever needed. I'm a tea man in the mornings, but a jolt of strong coffee can be a major help when the feet, knees, back etc (I'm old and could go on) are starting to complain just because I've seen the next hill!
Wonderfully eccentric. I particularly enjoyed the contrast between the fine wine and the tepid mash. And while they say that hunger is the best sauce I have always found that good company beats it hands down and it was patent that you were both in good company. A very enjoyable pair of videos, thank you very much.
Thank you Chris - it was quite late in the day when we sat down to eat and it was much needed! We did have a great day out and I'm glad that comes across in the videos.
Absolutely brilliant! Many laugh out load moments in this video. I would have put the mash in the sausage pot but for the sheer hilarity of watching you trying to cook it, I’m glad you didn’t ! 😂 Well done you two ~ more please.
Thanks Tracy! Yes it was a bit of a challenge with two stoves but three pans and thanks to the wind chill everything went cold so quickly after taking it off the heat. I think your suggestion would have been better, but I was thinking about the presentation! Mr WC21 was a very gracious dinner guest as ever though, and made very polite remarks about the slightly tepid plate of food he was presented with!
I have always been impressed by Tweedy’s one pot specials, which have been cooked in very adverse conditions. Todays sad sausages and lukewarm mash are a lesson in keeping it simple. It is very possible that ‘The Leather Bottle’ was a country pub left high and dry by the long term effects of the Industrial Revolution.
Thanks for watching Jim. Incredible to think there was enough money in it 100 years ago, for this remote and off the beaten track pub to trade. I was intrigued by the idea that the ancient Ridgeway was still in use by some sort of regular traffic at that stage. Just ramblers and TH-camrs nowadays.
I thought I was keeping it simple! When I did sausages and mash outdoors once before I used that Idahoan instant mash, and it went a lot more smoothly - unfortunately a lack of time on this outing to shop properly and thus tried to make do with what we could find in M&S!
Absolute gem, and a joy to watch. I live in the Chilterns and have camped discreetly on Watlington Hill, never knew it has that white mark! Will go in search. I can recommend a lovely hidden valley near there if you want to camp there no one will bother you, its called Shirburn Hill, near to Watlington, between that and Aston Rowant. Keep up the wonderful delightful gems, I was particularly taken with the sight of well dressed men on rope swings; classic British humour.
Thanks Seán! The food turned out OK but it was a real challenge getting it all to stay hot enough! I think it was just the wind chill - the veg and that gravy were definitely bubbling away but then two minutes after taking them off the stove they'd be lukewarm!
Absolutely wonderful...I have just subscribed to your charming channel. Mate, you could have made this vid a pay per view just to see Mr WC21UKproductionsLtd on that rope swing 🤣. Given you hiked the food up, I stick by my suggestion you'd make the perfect , Tweed wearing, cordon blue sherpa 🤣.(But mostly to ensure Darren made it back from his more extreme expeditions in one piece and well fed ). A genuine joy to watch. Thanks guys.
Thanks Phil! The rope swing was all Mr WC21's idea and it was originally just intended to provide a bit of background tomfoolery while he was delivering a bit of narrative in his video... But we enjoyed the silliness of middle aged men in tweed talking about history while on a rope swing so much that it became the intro to this video as well. Thanks for subscribing - I hope it doesn't disappoint!
Thank you! I think there is a lot to be said for a sandwich though - it's extremely time efficient once you're outdoors. The video might not make it clear but I spent pretty much an hour cooking here.... Sandwiches are also very unlikely to go wrong!
Thank you! It's a bit different from the pubs channel so I don't mention it much over there. For the pub videos I try (within the very limited constraints of my creative ability) to make something approximating documentary type videos. Whereas over here on the outdoors channel it's just me larking about in the countryside!
Middle aged man on a rope swing........really...???....love the cooking, the views and who was that southerner in the hat.....??....i have seen him somewhere before...!!!..all joking aside you two are great at this type of thing, may there be many more adventures in the future....

@@olias2716 it's weird how some people's accents do change through relocation and others don't. I haven't lived in Kent since 1985 and have been settled in places with quite strong regional accents during the intervening years, and yet I still sound like I could have been selling second rate crockery at Ashford market yesterday.
Hi John, the chuckleometer went off scale from start to finish. I was concerned for a while that you weren't going to deglaze the sausages .... how could I even think that, please accept my apologies. You know I really think you should do a Three Men in a Boat episode with Hedley. Have a great weekend!!
Thanks David! I did indeed dither over whether to deglaze as it was a bit of a pricey bottle but ultimately I was faced with a Bear Grylls style survival choice given that the sausages/onions were burning a bit. I think in the end I made the right decision. Caramelised is good, but eating charcoal is generally not! I would love to do something like a Three Men in a Boat re-enactment at some point but to date my attempts at kayaking/punting/rowing have all indicated I'm actually close to useless on the water. I think I would probably need some serious training first!

Good to hear! I have found the risk of spillages to be a bit lower with cans given the lower centre of gravity but given what's at stake it's best not to be complacent!
