So, what can I say about today's episode in relation to the novel?
0:51 Hou Cheng was one of Lu Bu's generals. Under Episodes 8 and 43 I described how two of Lu Bu's other generals handed him over to Cao Cao and Liu Bei, and his treatment of Hou Cheng is the reason why. (Well, in a straw that broke the camel's back sense, anyway.) Lu Bu bans consumption of alcohol in the city he's defending from Cao Caos's siege. A stableman steals some horses intending to deliver them to Liu Bei, but is intercepted and killed by Hou Cheng, who then ferments some wine to celebrate the recovery of the horses. Lu Bu is outraged and orders him executed, but is persuaded by Song Xian and Wei Xu to commute the sentence to fifty lashes. At this point the three of them decide working for Lu Bu is more misery than it's worth, so Hou Cheng sneaks Red Hare to Cao Cao while the other two tie up Lu Bu and surrender the city.
Hou Cheng is never mentioned after this, so I'll assume he lived happily ever after.
4:51 Meng Da was mentioned last time. He does eventually switch to working for Liu Bei and sticks around quite a while.
5:35 Here's how that map is described in the novel:
_Producing a map from his sleeve, Zhang Song said, 'I am moved by my lord's ample virtue to present this. A single glance will apprise you of the road system of the Riverlands.' Casually, Liu Bei unrolled the map and examined it. The geographic details of the region were fully spelled out: topography and marching stages, dimension and distance of roads, strategic intersections, repositories of coin and grain._
6:21 I don't think Meng Da is Zhang Song's subordinate, but his friend.
6:34 I don't know what the fat horse is a reference to. Also it's a shame you're not using him; this guy has my favorite portrait in any game ever. He looks like he's under the influence of every mind-altering substance in China simultaneously, including a few exotic ones he imported.

So, the fat horse seems to be a complete mistranslation.
First of all, the guy speaks unusually humbly and formally in the JP text. He calls himself "watakushi," which is a more formal form of the first-person pronoun, and his dialog when he asks to join you is "どうか、このわたくしめも仲間に加えていただきたい", which also adds the humble "-me" suffix to "watakushi." The overall vibe looks something like "Might you allow even this poor fellow to join your ranks?"
So when he joins you, he uses an unusual idiom to express his humility and gratitude: "犬馬の労をいといませぬ" /kenba no rou o itoimasenu/
犬馬 /kenba/ literally means "dogs and horses," but apparently it's used as a humble first-person pronoun as well, in the sense of "I am but a dog and a horse compared to you, my lord." 労 /rou/ just means "labor" or "toil". I'm not really sure on いといませぬ, but I think it cashes out to 厭う /itou/ "to balk at, to spare oneself" + 〜ます formal verb ending + 〜せる causative/permissive verb ending + 〜ぬ archaic negative verb ending. It's probably a stock phrase, but I couldn't find it referenced in precisely that form. ("犬馬の労をいとわない" seems to be a more common phrase with probably roughly the same meaning.) Anyway, it all seems to work out to something like "I will not allow myself to spare even the work of a dog or a horse in your service."
The message when he joins your party is completely standard, and doesn't mention dogs or horses.
So, where did the fat horse come from? My guess is that the translator looked this up in a paper dictionary, saw the word 犬馬 "dogs and horses," misread it as 太馬 (not a real word as far as I can tell, but the kanji are "fat" and "horse"), had no idea what to do with the rest of the grammar, and just assumed that the guy was literally offering the service of his fat horse or something. And then thought it was funny enough that they decided to add a callback to it in a unique "joined the party" line. It's a lot easier to work out what weird idioms like this mean in the days of digital dictionaries and Google than it was when this patch was made, probably.
Also, I think what he actually says about Zhang Song is that they have sworn a vow together. (せいしをともに ちかったなか; I assume /seishi/ here is 誓紙, "written oath.")

I need to find that portrait of him.
Edit: Found it. I see what you mean. (This went better than me trying to find out if there was a certain change in DQIIIHD2D)

Huang Zhong walking to the side cracks me up. The plume on his helm looks like a floppy ear. General Dobby!

0:29 - 0:39 - Silver Potions to deal with them pesky werewolves- Wait, what do you mean they aren't in this game?
6:18 - 6:38 - Gotta "love" those "But thou must!" scenarios.

Yet another great HC-video. Thanks for being such an awesome LP'er, Mr. Bailley!
I was wondering if you might do Blazing Souls: Accelate or Spectral Souls (both for the PSP) someday? :)

On the contrary, I'd say that _the moment_ you step into the outside area with *Xiangyang Castle* in it, you should check out the cave first. Remember, you might be *prohibited* from getting to the forest area, but you're _fully allowed_ to check out the cave! You're just can't get to the small area that the goof *Meng Da* is blocking, because you obviously have no *Liu Bei Letter* to convince him with at that point!
    And seriously now, we're talking:
*Two Silver Potions* + *Two Tactic Potions* + *Flame Armor* = *SPELUNKER TIME!*
Check out the cave first, take all that juicy stuff, return to *Xinye Castle* to re-supply and save, and then get to Xiangyang Castle to face up against *Cai Mao* and his men. *THAT EARLY!*
By the way, Meng Da probably meant that his steed is *rotund* in horsepower, because that much is true! *185* Agility is *indeed* impressive (Zhao Yun has *180* Agility, by the way), but combining that with his *180* Strength and *155* Intelligence? Eh, I let you be the judge on that one! At least Meng Da has better stats than he had in the first game! Love his special portrait, too! I told you he's a goof! *HEE DUN GOOF'D!*
And finally, have *Zhang Fei* keep *ChiTuMa* and things _should_ be fine, though I have experienced a _weird_ thing with _one of the character slots acting like the one closest south to it_ after the party change, which made no sense, but... Well, at least Xinye Castle does come with a save point... It's almost as if *Capcom* knew! Just save, prepare, ask Liu Bei for the way!

Are random general encounters different compared with the first game? I mean, can you encounter a specific enemy general multiple times thoughout a chapter, or does the game keep track of the ones you already encountered, so you don't meet them twice?

    • @HCBailly
      @HCBailly  12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

Yeah, you can encounter the same general multiple times in the chapter in which they are normally fought.

It's a shame you're not using Meng Da. Aside from have solid (granted not extraordinary) Strength and Intelligence, he also has the second-highest Agility of the playable generals in the game.
