Don’t feel sorry for me either haha I’m just giving you a heads up. Now, you may say your jokes… - Azario
One big difference between this version and the Steam version is that the Steam version doesn't have double boost, which was first introduced in the PSP version and ported over to this version. In the Steam version, you had one lifebar to kill the bosses and no way to restore HP in combat. From the PSP version onward, you had the ability to use Double Boost, which upon activation inflicted damage in an area around you and made your HP start regenerating while it was active. So bosses become significantly less harrying once you got this upgrade.
"... Felghana hails from a musical era I consider 'peak Falcom'." From a time when Falcom paid Yukihiro Jindo to rearrange entire game soundtracks instead of just producing a handful of new tracks to buffer their pared down, overworked internal team. Legitimately great times. One element of the review I feel that undersells Felghana is the differences in the various difficulty settings. Felghana is a game in which actual care was put into most of the difficulty settings (except the far extremes). Bosses are more than just stronger and tougher on higher settings but actually have more moves and tighter dodge windows on old moves. It's the rare action game that actually rewards replays with a new experience.
Fun fact: Before the PSP version, there was a Windows release that wasn't on Steam. It was JP only, however, and a fan translation patch existed written by the same guy who now does localizations for Atlus. That was my first foray into the series.
I’m so excited to dive into this video! I love your in depth reviews and trust your judgement. 😊 Origin was my first Ys game and it was fantastic! Then I played Ys 8, which needs no explanation for how mind blowing good that was! The settting, the characters, gameplay and music! I’m just starting Ys 9 now, and will be picking up Ys Memoire asap!
Thank you so much for this awesome review, Azario :) No worries about the pronunciation of Ys Memoire, we all understand what you meant. I am super hyped for this release and I can hardly believe this game exists on modern platforms. I have the physical PS 5 version and will probably buy it digitally as well.
@redcrimson1028 only a few quality of life features. Namely: No refined artwork. The PC version only has the original 2005 art, not the 2012 PSP art. (Which there is probably a mod for) No W. BOOST. this was added to the PSP release. Said skill regenerates HP when used, making boss fights easier once it's acquired. (There is no way to heal normally in this game) No. 2X experience multiplier for getting a 999 hit chain. The PC version Maxes out at 1.99 and doesn't get higher. Voice acting was also not present in the PC version, but it got patched in by Xseed in 2020 or so. The User interface is different between versions. The story and gameplay content is the same.
Oath in Felghana is legitimately my favourite Ys game. I feel that is boasts a better setting tan Origin (and also stars Adol) and is just a tighter, better-designed package than Lacrimosa of Dana. If I were to make a videogame, I'd like to make something like Oath in Felghana.
Is it the game by itself or is it the "Day 1 Refined Edition"? I ask because I've been trying to find a way to purchase a physical copy of the game by itself, but all I can find in terms of ordering the game is the "day 1 refined edition" that costs twice as much as buying the game digitally.
@@matthewmuir8884 depends how much you value Xseed physical releases. They always come with great extras. I'm a collector, so for me this pick up is a must. But I can see where you are coming from also.
@@DieselJT Thanks. I can see how that stuff would be of value to collectors. I'm not a collector; I just want the game, and I don't have any space left in my Switch to make a digital purchase (and that's with me having an SD card).
For me the best Ys game alongside VIII. Gameplay and Soundtrack are top notch and the pacing is much tighter than in recent titles. Hopefully the updates come over to PC as well.
Oath of Felghana was my favorite Ys game until Dana, so I'm definitely picking it up for a 3rd time. (To be fair it was also my first Ys game) One thing that concerns me though is that you mentioned Adol's grunts being voiced, but what about the dialogue? The original PC/PS2 versions didn't have any voice acting, but the PSP version added fully voiced dialogues. Am I to assume they used the old voiceless version for this remaster? It would be a shame if they excluded all those voice lines again. Also, in case it is voiced can you choose the JP voices?
My CE should arrive tomorrow. I really hope Gamestop shipped it in a box!!!!!! I had to return The Last Faith Nycrux Edition cause it got beat to hell in a shipping bag.
Depends This version is really for those who A. Love this game. (You wouldn't ask this since you are probably already buying it) B. those who didn't play any prior version. (Missed out for one reason or another, and now have the means to get it) If neither of those are you, and you're more of a C: played the Steam version, though it was ok, Then I wouldn't recommend it since i doubt the QoL features that are present (W BOOST, 2x exp multiplier for 999 hit chain, updated art and UI, gallery extras) Will make the core experiencem which, isn't any different, better.
I pre-ordered this game on Amazon back in October, but it says it won't make it to me for another couple of weeks. I guess pre-ordering doesn't guarantee getting the game ASAP. 😅
Amazon has been slacking a bit with these types of stuff. I preordered the Refined edition at my local retailer a week after Black Friday sales. There’s a bit of a nitpick with this “refined” edition, not sure if it’s manufactured wrong….but the cardboard box unfortunately doesn’t close completely, so that kinda upsets me lol. This might be the worst packaged “day one” edition I’ve ever seen XSEED release, well again, that’s just a nitpick in regards to that little issue I have, lol.
It sounds like a good game. However, it is rather slimy that the only way to buy a physical copy of the game is to buy the "Day 1 Refined Edition" that's twice the price of a digital copy of the game.
