driving is stupid considering the only way a train can change direction is from a switch which is either powered (dispatcher) or manual (conductor). Engineers are termed because back in the day engineers actually had to problem solve and fix or keep an engine running to the best of their ability sort of a bad problem. They throttle modulate, as in, forwards or backwards, and thats not considered driving. So there you go, the logical and common sense version, not the stupid ignorance dumb silly English term.
dude, what i said is PURE FACT. IT has NOTHING to do with countries. Driving a train is impossible unless the engineer can control his own switches and ONLY THEN can he control his own direction of travel, instead of his own MOVEMENT of travel.. Stop bieng a dumbfuck, please.
When they used to work head end into Perth we always found the cabs very cramped. 12 hours on one from Kalgoorlie to Perth was a test. I always preferred AN or EL as lead unit.
What's the lever between the independent brake handle and the reverser? Is that the horn? I'm an engineer for CN in Wisconsin and everything looks familiar except for that lever. Oh, and everything's on the wrong side of the cab.

It'd be nice to send one of the DLs to Port Adelaide, have it done up in the original AN colours and exhibit it in the museum, but knowing PN, they'd probably scrap them all.
Great video, great to get to see and hear what its like in the DL's, I want to become a train driver but if/when that happens I reckon the DL's might be gone, maybe not so much in NSW & VIC but I reckon there days are nearly numbered here in SA
Interesting vid mate. Looks good in 1080 fullscreen. The facts at the end were a good bonus as well. I guess if you ever get up to the North West you'll have to get used to sitting on the other side! As well as looking at monitors instead of analogue guages!
I enjoyed the video of how you were using the control levers. I noticed when you pan around the cabin twice I did not see the 2nd person in the cab?? Is it Doo in Victoria only. I am bit curious
great shot. I really want to work with you. I m a big fan of these kind of railway. I am from Pakistan. And, in future, i seriously interested to work with railway.
Yes they are a V12 710G3 3000hp unit, pacific national owns them all still, and some are in and out of service, they weren't a bad unit but far from the best we had.
that is so good ! bunbury street tunnel ! Im amazed at how fast they accelerate ! and the speed you were zooming along at . there was other locos trailing , were they powering ?
Pacific National was originally National rail, it was NSW government owned railway. It was sold off to Toll and Patricks. They also acquired Genisys & Wyoming Australia, which is now One Rail. Aurizon is what Queensland Rails bulk and intermodal rail used to be. PN was never owned by QR or Aurizon.
thats interesting. left side operation.. hmm. do these locomotives use what we use in the US? the exact AAR reverser handle? looks to be the same. could be notched differently.
OK thank you, i was Peterborough based S.A, we worked a lot of different loco's from there, I was in AN at the time, and started of with SAR there, looking at these videos, i realize i miss driving but not the shift work.
The US and Canada are about the only countries who refer to 'us' as Engineers. The rest of the world refers to us as Engine Drivers. HA! Looking at those controls, they're the same as what I ran in Chicago on the newer MP36's. Only you guys are sitting on the wrong side! ha ha Airline polit are left seat, Railroad engineers/drivers on the right seat. Except Boston and Miami got it all wrong as well with the subway motormen on the left. UGH! ;-)
The early CTA 'L' trains I remember the drivers being on the right in that little cab. I always thought they were cool. I grew up right by the South Shore line.

Thanks for sharing from an ex GM loco driver in Ireland. Great acceleration and the sound brings back happy memories.
LOVE THE "TRAILBLAZER FRIDGE" IN THE CAB
love the big Leslie on the nose
Thank you for sharing. It was wonderful to her the rumble and the other noise of the DLs. Been a while since I was behind the controls.

doesn't matter where you are, "drive" and "trains" is ignorant and improper, apparently australians, europeans and english need to learn that.

That several hundred ton train accelerates faster than my fathers old Ute.
We also use NR class locos which all have computer screens, but we still sit on the LHS. only the imports are rhs. lol

The horn sounds like the C class horns in nsw
Transport nsw with ben Leslie S5T same as the C class.
Oh ok. But amazing video
Where could I see a DL running in NSW?
I have seen them parked but not running.
Great video!😊
They do run around Tamworth, narribri area at times, one was with an 82 class last week. I'll keep an eye out.
Do you ever get anoyed when driving these train because of the loud noises? Would you wear some sore of ear protection?
No it gets quite soothing depending on what type of engine it is and how hard you're working it
NOW THIS I LIKE !! Real hard core heavy metal roliing on heavy metal rail through some of the twists and turns of the high iron !!
What were QR National locos doing down in what I assume is Dynon?
Being serviced by Gemco.
Does the DL class have a CD player as well
No.
i have one question when running 3 to 5 locos how are they all operated with 1 or 2 guys
called distributed power operation.
Multiple unit
Is that a BL class or G class behind the DL loco?
Nathanrailfan Most Likely BL Class
That’s definetly a G class because of the middle door and angled roof
Macs Trains yeah it is
G because at 4:02 you can see the step cutouts behind the cab door instead of in front of them.
gm engine?
Looks like train sim world

Did Pacific National change there name to Aurizon as well.
When it was owned by QR till it was floated off and made private.
No, they didn't change names.
Aurizon and PacNat (Pacific National) are separate companies....😊
Pacific National was originally National rail, it was NSW government owned railway. It was sold off to Toll and Patricks. They also acquired Genisys & Wyoming Australia, which is now One Rail. Aurizon is what Queensland Rails bulk and intermodal rail used to be. PN was never owned by QR or Aurizon.

Not too loud really.

Michael Appleby 8 power notches down and 8 dynamic braking notches up
Looks like a bassackwards F-40.
4:42 is that a L class?
Is this with MTU engine? Which Aussie trains have MTU engines.
No this is an EMD 710 V12.
The CSR and QBE class have MTU engines.
i like how your name has "train driver" in it but over here, we refer them as train pilots.... :P
Wait how come QR National had a pair of VR X Classes?
They bought them years ago when freight Australia folded.

There's a few variants that come up on those signals.
