    Just went through this on my Porsche. If the pump was ever pulled you have to prime the shit out of it, even if it wasn’t pulled it may have dried out. I’m talking a quart down the filter hole. What I did was slowly pour oil down the hole while someone else cranked until oil came up. You’re not seeing oil at the filter, it’s not pumping.

    • @InitialEngineers
      @InitialEngineers ปีที่แล้ว +16

      This should be pinned and he should give it a try so hopefully he doesn't have to pull the motor

      I was typing this exact comment! Though, I was very surprised AND hesitant that it took an entire quart. Fixed my problem as well.

      Spot on. Got the tshirt on my own 997tt rebuild(s) full power DIY. I would also say that 1bar on an up to temp mezger is ok according to porsche manual, especially with thin oil. Prime it but dont overfill as thats all bad

    I feel for you. When I had the motor on my 911 rebuilt, my builder said he would only do it if I was happy to split the bottom end. I did (at extra cost) and we found all sorts of crap which necessitated a new oil pump plus the removal of some metal fragments which we can only assume we’re in the engine when new, because we couldn’t find anywhere else they could have come from. Any way, got the car back, ran it in for 500 miles, keeping it below 4K and finally after another service was able to give it the full beans. Rev’ed to 7k and was epic. The following day it refused to start. Called my engineer who immediately diagnosed a faulty crank sensor. Hopefully your issue will be minor, or the engine builder steps up (because he should have tested the engine before giving it back).

    With a 996, you have to start it briefly to build oil pressure. Not sure if the 997 is the same. The starter alone isn't enough to build pressure. You can crank til the cows come home and see nothing. Prefilling the filter actually makes it harder to prime.

I wish the best that you can get it figured out.

    Oil pump chain tensioner failure... chain is likely popped off the cog and bound up in the engine drive side... new tensioner new chain new cogs on the oil pump and crankshaft, replace all rod and crank bearings as the low friction nitride coating is likely no longer their.
    Just like the 1981 xj650 I fixed up... no one sells new bearings and then bozo sneaks over and sprays so much ether into cylinder 3 that the rod fly's out the block. "fixing luxury toys is a tax collection gag, the primary owners bag the f out of them senselessly... -60% msrp value if it has more then 300 miles on it"

  • @gerardbuscombe585
    @gerardbuscombe585 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dude. I had this exactly problem on a new build recently. The oil pump is not primed. You need to find a way to back feed oil into the oil pump (wrong way). I did it through the oil filer using a hand pump. Get a spare oil filter housing and drill and tap a hole, put a barb in on the outer side and puml heaps of oil back to the pump. Basically overfilling everything. Once you get the oil pump primed it will stay good. Drop oil because its too full then refill. You should be good to go.

  • @peterrule8107
    @peterrule8107 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I had a low oil pressure issue in my 996 Turbo and I had one shop lie to me and say that there was an internal issue and needed a full rebuild. After speaking to 2 other Porsche shops, they called BS on the diagnosis as the internals were so strong and over engineered for racing. Apparently the dry sump oil pump is extremely robust and takes a lot of punishment. I'm hoping this is a very simple fix for you and its on the road shortly!

    • @mak23997
      @mak23997 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm curious what your issue ended up being? I have an 07 997 turbo and an indy shop that works mostly on Ferraris told me a mechanical sound I was hearing from the engine was an oil pump and it would cost $15K to rebuild. I said no thanks and poured some liquimily lifter additive and it got much better. I'm gonna do an engine flush with the liquimolly product as well before my next oil change but just curious what your issue was. These engines have like 9 oil pumps and like you I'm pretty sure they're well engineered.

    • @peterrule8107
      @peterrule8107 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mak23997 I just had a faulty Oil Pressure sensor and the shop was adamant that the engine had serious internal issues and needed a full rebuild at $30K +. I didn't have a lazy 30 grand lying around so I got a 2nd and 3rd opinion. The other shops said it was almost impossible for a Mezger engine to have low oil pressure without a major issue like a piston squirter falling out from a cracked case etc. The oil pumps in Mezger engines are over engineered.
      Both shops said to replace the oil pressure sensor and see if the problem remained. I replaced the sensor myself for $80 and the problem was instantly fixed.
      The shop was lying just to try and drum up some extra work.

    I build Porsche engines by trade and hard to believe that a 997tt oil pump isn’t making any pressure especially since it did in the old engine, I can see low pressure but no pressure at all seems strange.

    • @mak23997
      @mak23997 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have an 07 997 turbo and my engine was making a metallic sound (more than the typical mezger metallic marble sound) had an indy shop (one that mostly works on Ferraris) tell me it was a bad oil pump and would be $15K to repair. To his credit he didn't really want to do the work haha. I'm just curious as someone who builds Porsche engines what can you say about the oil pumps in the 997 turbos? Do they fail under "normal use"? If they do it sounds like a b--tch to fix. I don't have any engine or ECU mods just an 100 cell cat exhaust. Thanks!
