    Hello Teacher Sarah, excellent lesson as always! Love from Malaysia!
    Also, one question, what are we to do if we encounter an Extended Writing question with only 2 bullet points? What should my 3rd paragraph be about then? This occurred in May/June 2023, paper 21 Section A.

      Is this the past paper you're referring to? bestexamhelp.com/exam/cambridge-igcse/english-first-language-0500/2023/0500-s23-qp-21.php
      This is a Paper 2 - the writing paper. Directed Writing question is different to Extended Writing on Paper 1.

    Can you offer guidance on how to determine which side to choose in a question in Paper 2 directed writing, and what's the best approach to structuring an answer when discussing both sides?

    • @Taughtly
      @Taughtly  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Sure!
      I discuss determining which side to choose in this video, where I unpick four past paper questions and how they give clues (or outright tell you) which side to argue. Go to minute 9:47 - th-cam.com/video/yVgzJImdLzo/w-d-xo.html
      In my experience, they usually want you to argue the more open-minded, environmentally friendly, optimistic side. E.g. of course they would argue that we can save the environment or that you should apologise if you make a mistake.
      If you really can't figure it out, then it's fine to alternate paragraphs for and against. Depends on how much you can write and how quickly, but two 'for' paragraphs and two 'against' paragraphs would probably cover it.

    • @duabutt9011
      @duabutt9011 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Taughtly Thanks for your help! Quick question though: If we already know which side to support, do we still need to argue against it and structure our response accordingly?

    • @Taughtly
      @Taughtly  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@duabutt9011 No, you don't. So if it's very clear which side they want you to support, no need to be balanced. E.g. in the podcast one, the highest scoring responses just argued directly for why podcasts would benefit the business. They did mention the counterarguments, but then rebutted them straight after, which gave them explicit point +eval point.

    What if I write the wrong person's perspective in Q3extended writing in IGCSE0500? How many points will I lose?

    • @Taughtly
      @Taughtly  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on how badly this affected your register but in principle maybe down by about one band, e.g. If you were an 8, you'd become a 6.

    Do you have any advice on how to get better at getting the implicit ideas. My writings usually never contains what the makring scheme has (for the implicit points) and I am worried I might get deducted a lot of marks.

    Hello, I really enjoy your videos and I have one question. You give the structure Overall, Quote, Meaning, Connotations, Effect for question 2d, and that works really well for me, but for question 2c I’m really struggling to not go off on a tangent when making inferences, so I created a structure for myself that goes The quote, “…” suggests that…, implying that…, this creates a sense of… It helps me to be concise but I was wondering whether it is too concise as when I look at sample responses, they seem much more “artistic” and “deep” if you know what I mean. My question is, is this structure effective? Is this the right approach to bag 3 marks, or is it too simple? Thank you so much!

    • @Taughtly
      @Taughtly  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ipcpipcp1289 Hi there and thanks for watching. Which sample responses are you looking at? Most are written by teachers ☺
      I'd also say that the "artistic" element is coming when you analyse connotations and the effect of the word, not from the structure of the answer itself. The structure in the video hits the mark scheme in exactly the order the examiner will look through your answer. If I recommend this structure to my own students, truly believe that I think this is the best possible way to maximise your marks ☺ 🌟 good luck with your studies!

      It depends on who you are, who you're writing to and what the topic is. If it's to a friend, for example, let them know how you've been recently and why you're writing to them about this topic - why are they the person you've chosen? E.g. "You've always been so kind and given me such good advice, so I hope you might be able to help me figure out what to do next."
