Writing my exam in exactly an hour and 23min
First of all I would just like to thank you for all of your videos and resources, I can’t believe this is free!
I just had a question for the summary. I often find myself using ‘you’, for example ‘cycling tours allow you to escape from the confines of a corporate job’. I’m guessing it is best to avoid this, if necessary using ‘one’ or avoiding such structures altogether (‘cycling tours can be a good way to take a break from the demands of office jobs). My teachers have also pointed out that I’m too persuasive, how can I maintain a more neutral tone?
@@GOATEDITZ_7x10 ☺ thank you and good luck for your exam!
How about thinking who the 'you' is specifically? E.g. "cycling can allow travellers/locals..."

Are these good enough?
"Being a gladiator was an unpredictable and life-threatening occupation. Training was fierce and exhausting, and they were put through rigorous diets."
27:26
"Residing in barracks or behind the bars, gladiators were mostly slaves or captives of war who were coerced to fight in battle."
I can't tell you how much you've helped me! I feel like I've found the holy rulebook for summary writing, haha, thank you so much!!
The first link in your description doesn't work. Sometimes the link shorteners expire. Thank you for sharing this content!
Thanks so much your videos helped a lot for paper 1!
Is the less words the better? Do you suggest writing 90 words with all 10 points or 120 words with 10 points
No, not necessarily better. You're graded on having the content points, being relevant and putting into your own words in a concise way.
Hi Dear can i have a access to this past paper
Can you put the insert link or the series number
Amazing content as always! Love from Malaysia!
this was super helpful..thank you
you are amazing ❤
THANK YOU SO MUCH
the resource is not downloading :( link doesn't work

@@Molly-x3b yes I have a full, free video for exactly that on my website. You need to register an account but that's free to do, no ads etc.

After you get on, you're looking for paper 1, question 1f, paraphrasing. ☺
Hi! Do we need to write a one line opening for a summary or not?
@@zainabmalik4010 nope! If it helps you then go for it but better not to and get straight into the answers.
thank you!
I am indebt to you! 🤗 Tysm!!!!!!
Hello, I would like to ask a question. My teacher says that it is the best to use long complex sentences and you will only get marks if u do so. So, I always end up putting everything in like maximum two or three sentences and I am wondering whether the sentence length and type affect the marks. Here you said writing is only five marks and reading marks are more important so what type of sentence length and type should I go for? Are short simple and compound sentences okay? Because my teacher also said like if u write compound sentence u won’t get marks. Thank you for the video❤
You don't get marks for sentence lengths for summary writing. In fact, if you end up with very long sentences that are difficult to follow, you could actually lose marks.
For the 2024 mark scheme, which was changed this year to remove spelling, punctuation and grammar, this is what you're credited for:
• A relevant response that is expressed clearly, fluently and mostly with concision.
• The response is well organised.
• The response is in the candidate’s own words (where appropriate), using a range of well-chosen vocabulary which clarifies meaning.
If your sentences are too long and confusing, you're not longer expressing yourself "clearly", as per the first bullet point.
You can use compound sentences without fear!
Another question is that can two points be put in one sentence, can two points be paraphrased into one single point and still obtain 2 marks
Yes you can do that and still be credited. You can watch my free video lesson on paraphrasing to learn more methods of paraphrasing: taughtly.co.uk/courses/igcse-first-language-english-paper-1-and-paper-2-revision-course/
YOU ARE SO AMAZING
what paper is this text b and questions taken from?
It's one I wrote myself so I would be able to reproduce the materials on my site without copyright issues. Hi ma'am. Is a summary written as ONE paragraph or as many as the ideas in the original text?
There isn't a specific rule about paragraphing. In theory, since it's only 120 words, students could write just one paragraph and still get 5/5 for writing. It's more about how they've grouped and ordered their ideas so that they flow naturally.
However, if the question was a "Summarise _____ and _____" question, where the question itself has two parts, it would be more natural and advisable to group into two paragraphs.
You should only include relevant ideas that answer the question. If you include extra information that isn't related to the question, you will lose marks for having a lack of focus and excess material, so be selective. Aim for around 10-12 separate points that answer the summary question.
Thanks for watching & happy studying! :)
Thanks ma'am. You are a life saver. It's happy teaching actually. I have a class writing end of this year 2024. I really need a lot of your help. 🎉🎉🎉
@@margarethnyamushonongora7522 Thanks Margaret! Hope you get a good grade 🌟
Is SPAG on the mark scheme for this years exam? including tomorrows
SPAG has been removed from the Paper 1 mark scheme from 2024 onwards, so no, it's not on this paper today. It will obviously be on your writing Paper 2 exam though haha!
Didnt you said that 1 para for advantages and another of disadvantages?
Is the main idea of this video applicable for 1123 olevel english.
As a person who is doing AS level these videos are very useful. Honestly showed me how little I know. I have no idea how I passed IGCSE english with an A without knowing any to be frank.
That's really interesting that the same skills are still applicable. I guess you're studying A Level English Language? It seems like a natural progression of the IGCSE course.
I’m confused about implicit and explicit ideas
