Fabulous the Leslie 760VL. I've one since 1975 ! Year 2014 my technical service put the tube reverb power amp of a 147RV for treble tweeter, and I can say the sound is rather fabulous !
I'm not sure how other Leslie speakers are configured, but in the 720, there is are 2 motors, as you can see. The spinning pulley is pushed through to the other side from where it's mounted, and turns a bungee cord kind of belt that turns the horns (top and bottom). There's also a tension wheel to keep the belt tight. The top motor is pointing up, and the bottom motor is pointing down.
@LongJONcoy I've had mechanical issues. Motor speeds. Takes a while for them to reach full speed. They don't like the cold either----the speaker is kept in an attic storage room that doesn't have heat. I'd love to have the motors rebuilt, but I bet that would be expensive. It sounds aweosme though.
@LongJONcoy I haven't had any power problems-----like the feed cable. I'm lucky to have a cable that's in good condition. You can still find parts, including cords on Ebay though! Thank you for your comment : )
I have a 720 Leslie speaker hook up to a Hammond A102 Organ with 2 1/2 moon switch, I have been playing on it now the Leslie want work, organ still play. can someone give me some INFO what may be the problem. thank
I don't know how to explain this exactly --Instead of controlling the motor speed with a voltage change, each motor is actually 2 motors on 1 shaft. There are the windings/transformer thing for one speed, and then on that same motor shaft, right next to it, there's a 2nd set of windings/transformer. So when I change the speed, I'm actually cutting the power off of the one motor, and continuing to turn the same shaft with the other one, that's wound to produce the other speed.
@MrScotty0109 Yeah, someone else pointed that out to me----look way down on the comments-----apparently 2 years ago. I was really surprised ---had no idea. BUT, it's kind of cool how they made it so that there's a weight balance between the 2 horns-------so that it spins right. Very cool. Thank you for the information.
Awww, sorry Bob. I'm not a skilled guy in electronics. I mean, I'd be checking wiring and the Leslie cable, but I think the real culprit is going to be the speaker. So I wonder if you have a cheap speaker laying around, and see if you splice it in, does it also cut out? ANY speaker will do as a test. At least you'd know what's going on. Sorry I can't be better help. If it continues to cut out, then you know you need a better trained repair person.
yep, chorale is the "leslie-word" for slow. my leslie710 also goes to chorale before it stps, i think thats because of the solid state amp. you had to use a "brake kit" for tube leslies because they couldnt stop when they came out of the factory.
Lo siento, ya no hacen los altavoces de Leslie, o al menos no creo que lo hagan. Así que usted necesita ir a las tiendas de música que venden instrumentos usados y altavoces.--------------------I'm sorry, they don't make Leslie speakers anymore, or at least I don't think they do. Hiya James! I don't have a decent recorder ----it's gotten to the point where I have to have a mixing board just to catch the sound correctly. My laptop MIGHT be able to record it, but to get it in the right position and all that will be tricky. I don't have proper computer software for recording now either. Funny though------"record organ" is on a note that's been on my desk for years! I have little notes all over for when I get bored. For those who need to understand: The Horn in the Leslie is driven by the "Horn Driver" not "Horn Speaker". If you are seeking to replace the "Horn Driver" with a Driver with more power there are many options to choose from. However, be sure to replace the Driver with the proper Ohms that match with the "Lower Speaker" and the "Cross Over" unit, which can also be replaced and upgraded...🎹🎹 🎼🎵
Sorry I was not trying to be a smart ass, or just an ass. I've messed with Leslie's for years and just wanted to help folks out who might not know about them.
+25musicmaker They are BOTH fed ACOUSTIC SOUND via the speaker beneath them that is facing upwards. Are you suggesting one horn is "blocked off" from receiving sound to create the sound we hear? as opposed to both horns throwing the sound? Forgive me but your comment reads as if these horns are fed their "sound" electronically (via wire)
@@damienpercy5245 The drum is the same way, only one path per rotation. If the horn was not blocked off the sound movement would be twice as fast as it currently sounds.
At 4:46, I play part of "Out of My Dreams" - It's from the musical, "Oklahoma". Then at 5:17 I attempt (poorly) to play part of "Nearer My God to Thee". Then at the high speed, at 5:52, I play 1/2 of "Out of My Dreams" from "Oklahoma" again. ---It's a pretty song, and I can play it several different ways, and with different voices of the organ. It's VERY simple sheet music with the the notes written on each note on the page. BUT, with the Hammond S-6, you can easily play it to sound great.
I used a ceramic resistor to knock down the power of the line out of the S-6 (the wires that go to the speakers), and then let the 760's amp do the rest. Sorry, I don't know the value of the resistor----the way it's mounted, the value is on the bottom, and I can't see it. So the pre amp is the organ itself, the 760 takes it from there. Ummm, doing it this way, I still have full volume control on the expression bar that rides my right leg when I play. Did that help at all?
I think so. So it seems you can pretty much rig it to use the power from the organ. Just not 100% sure how to do it. I haven't received the leslie just yet. But I'm sure I'll get it working with minimal cost. Thanks
Justin Walls I think my Leslie cord is a 9 pin, but I only use 6 of the pins. 2 of them are for the power ---110V AC. The other 2 control the speed of the motors, and the other 2 are the sound input---------On my S-6 chord organ, there are only 2 wires that go to the speakers --- "+' and "-". So I took the wires off the speakers and ran them into the Leslie's input, BUT it was far too loud and distorted. So I reduced the S-6 output with a resistor. BUT, the resistor blew up, LOL ----So I needed a ceramic resistor (from Radio Shack) that can take whatever power or heat caused the blow up. When you get your Leslie, hopefully you'll have a Leslie cord for it ----you can simply play around with it to figure out which pin does what. Be careful, and trace the wires---you want to be sure the 110V AC is going to the right place.
