- My own composition to this solo by Matt Garstka. This one was a lot of fun to make, Matt just grooves so nicely. Thanks to Michael Graham for playing a shredding sax solo. Check out his facebook page below. Hope you guys enjoy. Original Video filmed and produced by VicFirth. Drums mixed by Austin Burcham.

What makes this so impressive (aside from your great music) is the fact that when you listen to the original video, it, sounds impressive, but from a chops perspective. With the music, you realize that Matt's free playing still has a lot of musicality within it.

The fact that you wrote music around what Matt jammed on drums is so backwards in my brain; as a drummer myself I generally approach my playing from the POV of how what I play in a band fits around everything else, because I like to see the whole picture of the song and then bring my own interpretation, rather than thinking about other people fitting around me.
Added to that, I really enjoy Matt's playing and it was a pretty awesome song when all put together; nice job! :-)
Thanks a lot David. Yeah, it is a very different approach to how people usually write music. Which for me seems to be making me turn out some more creative stuff by being limited to what I can do. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that writes music.

Haha thanks a lot dude. I basically went through the whole solo and automated my own click track to it. For this one I didn't really do much quantizing as most of the synths are kinda washy ones anyway. Glad you enjoyed it man :)

at first I was like, hmmm, not really Matt's strongest type of music to be playing to, and I was wondering why he would be choosing to put in so many fills, and something didn't quite sound locked on with the music. Then I realized the music was added to the solo!!! That's frackin crazy man! Quite impressive to be able to make an entire song around this solo. Great job!

whoa.... when I watched this, I thought it was MG playing along with this song. I was all like "how the hell is he nailing all the bits perfectly?" (not that he wouldn't be able to do that, but I was still amazed). THEN after it was over I read the description and realized you wrote this on top of the original solo. It fits perfectly! Damn.

Chad Wells imagine if bands actually wrote like this how musical it could be! Maybe a few are and we have no clue they write with the drums first. I think this is a really cool concept but too many guitar and piano players wouldn't agree to this be they wouldn't feel they could artistically express themselves the same way.
