Basically you take one pattern (this one starts out with a dotted quarter note, quarter note, dotted quarter note, a 3+2+3 pattern with the electric bass and bass drum) and shift it by a single beat every two measures. The entire time you're doing this you keep the snare predominantly on the same beat(s), be it 2 and 4 of each bar, or beat 1 of every other bar, or any other consistent pattern.
The simplest way I can think of to explain permutating drum patterns: The _pattern_ that you are playing *stays consistent,* but the _beats_ that you play it on *change.*
Think of it like, where the parentheses are, that's the 1 of the next measure.....123(4)12(3)41(2)34(1)234 and so on so forth. Try it with a metronome, I can't really explain it with text haha accent the beat where the next measure would start. It sounds really cool on a kit against a metronome, blows my mind every time I try it. You can move where and at what beat it will move to the next measure.

I have the exact opposite problem as you Matt. Your structure and precision is that of the most impressive I've ever seen. I wish I had the discipline to hone in on that as effectively as possible and stray away from spontaneity in my playing style. Amazing performance, as usual!

Matt! Matt for president! Id love to see your other performances of this. you have inspired me a lot and Id love to know if you had times When drums seemed really hard, making progress i mean. Times When you didnt have that much fun on the instrument. Im going through that feeling and it's a pain the ass.
Just take a couple of days off, it happens to all creative people. At some point you will get stuck a little and get frustrated. After those days you are gonna find the joy of playing again.
This is a tough one. Max is right that taking a day or two off can be helpful in reinvigorating you but I personally didn't do this for a long time. I always wanted to work through those lulls and stay on the path to mastery. I think taking a day off here and there is a dangerous train of thought because it promotes incremental lack of discipline. I like to use the times when I'm not inspired to work on methodical, technical, foundational materials and save the fun stuff for when I'm ready to have some fun! I say use the day off mentality very sparingly and make sure you capitalize on that time you're taking away from your practice.

I think it’d be great to see more of these concepts for helping build better structure and order in rhythmic patterns. I’ve listened to this video over and over. I often overthink when trying to put fills together and feel as if I don’t have enough spontaneity in my drumming
