Lovely old chuffer! We used to follow the narrow gauge through the Langkloof back in them days. I remember my dad explaining the narrow gauge to me as a little girl. Love the footage of the engine chuffing past, i could be standing there next to my dad. So good to see my beautiful country again as i remember it. And how good the little Garrett looks, she must have been painstakingly and lovingly restored.

Hello Anna, it's nice to know these videos take you back in time to fond memories of time spent with your Dad, I'd love to have seen some of the sights you recall. The Sandstone Estate transport museum is more than just a museum, a good proportion of the exhibits are in working order. Best wishes. Tim 😊.

I grew up in a South African 🇿🇦 town, in a posh suburb, yet less than a mile from the loco depot, where these GMA/GMAM behemoths got serviced and prepared for their journey up the Garden Route. Often, I would hear their chuffing and puffing, especially at night. Two hours away by car, on my uncle's farm, these locos would snake around the bends. There was a small station serving as a crossing point, with a silo right next to his farm yard. One day, one of these derailed and overturned right there. That was 50-ish years ago, but it's something one will never forget. Thanks for this lovely nostalgia. 🎉

Hello, It's nice to know this video brought back memories from the days when you lived within earshot of the locomotive depot, thank you for sharing your memories. Seeing the train on its side close to your uncle's farm must have been quite a sight.

Really great to see the South African railway heritage preserved at such a splendid place. Great photography. Sadly the narrow gauge train had already left Vailima when the 25NC came, a parallel run would have been great.
Is it right that part of the line was closed after a wash out? I remember that there was a loop back from Vailima towards the mountain on the left.

Hi, Sandstone Estates have done a really good job in preserving the atmosphere of the S African narrow gauge railways, sadly not much is left today of the once extensive narrow gauge systems that served farms, processing plants and ports. To have seen the 2 ft and 3ft 6in trains running side by side would have been the icing on cake. The loop was abandoned because it was expensive to maintain especially after heavy rainfall, I believe washouts as a result of a particularly violent storm were the final straw.

@@Timsvideochannel1 I know, the Port Shepstone-Harding line which I travelled on in 1994 as far as Paddock has been completely defunct for a while now with the station built for the tourist service in Port Shepstone completely in ruins. The Avontuur railway was already very run down in 1994, with the old Humewood Road depot abandoned but a couple of locomotives, now luckily at Sandstone, left to rot inside.
Railway preservation in general has very hard times in SA, Transnet doesn't care, there isn't a widespread public interest anymore and metal theft and vandalism is a huge problem. Having a secure site is the number one priority.

@@Tom-Lahaye Hello, your comment made interesting, yet at the same time sad reading. This was my first tour to South Africa, although many in the group I was travelling with had either lived there or visited on many occasions, it was interesting to hear their stories, because they remember the days when the railways played a much bigger part in the country's transportation system. The tour organisers tried to recreate scenes from the 60's and 70's and away from the stations I think they were successful. I used Google Earth to check spellings and locations and one thing that was very noticeable in photos posted to Google Earth was the rapid decay of both the stations and the infrastructure as a whole because photos posted only 5 years ago show the stations in much better condition and many cases still served by passenger trains. Sandstone Estates are to be congratulated for their part in preserving a significant part of the country's transport history.

@@Timsvideochannel1 The decay of the railways is insane. During the Covid pandemic passenger train operations were suspended. But they made the mistake to leave the stations unstaffed and without security surveillance. This resulted in all usable materials being robbed for use in shanty towns. More than half of all catenary wire, in the Johannesburg area more close to 100%, were robbed for the copper. Till this day the commuter service in JB is not fully up and running.
I did also notice this on Google maps and in other more recent videos of SA.
I don't know if you know of the Sanrasm disaster.
Sanrasm was once the national railway museum near Johannesburg. Lack of funding forced it to close down and the artefacts were left awaiting removal to other sites or sale. In the meanwhile large groups of metal thieves would enter the site stealing all parts containing copper, brass or bronze, and later steel as well. To get to the wheel bearings they propped up the locomotives on sleepers ad cut the frames, this way they damaged the majority of the collection beyond repair. Luckily the more valuable exhibits were already removed from site to other musea and several are on Sandstone now as well.

@@Tom-LahayeThank you for this information, it is similar to what I was told by other members of the group I was touring with. Nature dealt S Africa a good hand with fertile agricultural land, mineral wealth, good weather and fantastic tourist potential. It is such a shame that the natural assets aren't being put to good use to raise living standards and achieve the lifestyle potential on offer. Maybe I missed something, but to an outsider, it appears criminal that S Africa isn't achieving it's undoubted potential.

Hello Robert, today it is part of an international agri-business that produces wheat, soya beans, maize and sunflowers. You Might find this link interesting - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandstone_Estates
The only livestock I saw were the animals that posed with the train. Mr Kippling cakes are popular in the UK, the Battenberg cake is my favourite. Cheers. Tim.
