Having Boom after Space Babies is great too because of the whole "oh it's your first planet!" moment, as we would have had past Earth, present and future Earth, and a spaceship. You had very valid points, and it does tie in much better and make the time jumps feel less awkward (6 months passing through this rather than just Space Babies then BAM! Six months later!)

Moreso than any other episode in any series ever, I'm absolutely convinced they loved Devil's Chord forward just to match the timing of the ESC. Been struggling to figure out where it would have gone myself for a while too.

My order for episodes 1 - 6 is:
    1. Space Babies
    2. Boom
    3. 73 Yards
    4. Rogue
    5. The Devil's Chord
    6. Dot and Bubble
First of all I wanted the episodes to still make sense, e.g Space Babies needs to be first because it follows directly on from the Church on Ruby Road, the outfits are the same, etc. Second, I wanted the Devil's Chord to be later in the series but as neither the Doctor or Ruby see Susan Twist in this episode I needed a different episode to come just before the finale so I chose Dot and Bubble. This is the episode when they both realise something is really going on with her so it's a good lead into them travelling back to UNIT. Also I would move the scene with Carla from Rogue and put it into Boom when Ruby is lying on the floor with the Ambulance.

@@ScottX68000 Yeah the connection between CoRR and Space Babies is annoying. Obviously for mine to work you would have to take out the walk into the Tardis part and change Ruby's outfit which isn't much. For your list, moving the Rogue scene makes sense. This series should have been 12/13 episodes long. Here’s how these episodes should have been spaced out:
1: The Church on Ruby Road
    2: Space Babies
    3: Boom
    4:
    5:
    6: The Devil’s Chord
    7: 73 Yards
    8:
    9: Rogue
    10: Dot and Bubble
    11:
12: The Legend of Ruby Sunday
    13: Empire of Death
Episodes 4 and 5 should be a two parter introducing Unit HQ early on and developing Carla and Cherry Sunday.

    • @theoverallnerds
      @theoverallnerds  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

I think a couple episodes introducing unit would be cool, but a true episode focused on Ruby's family would have been brilliant, playing to RTD strengths. To be honest I think there's enough variation in this season for it to justify its 8 episode run. I think some longer episodes would have helped with the character development. But nice list, saving The Devil's Chord for later I agree with 👍🏾

@AlmightyBruce That Episode 4&5 shouldve been the Sontaran Stratagem/Poison Sky basically as you described. I feel that despite this being a reboot season, there shouldve been one more returning villain from NuWho (like there was Sutekh from classic for the finale). I think an episode with the Sycorax or Judoon would've worked there. Then I'd actually move Legend to Episode 11 and made a 3 part finale. The season 1 finale needed more room to breathe and a better resolution so episode 12 could've acted as the devastation and meeting Kind Woman. So actually, removing the resolution at the empire of death you could move it to episode 12 but lets just assume its a whole new episode and empire of death ended the season.
If I made my own order I would essentially do this (also dont mind me making my own title names lol):
      Establishing the Characters
      1. The Church on Ruby Road
      2. Rogue
      3. Boom
      4. Space Babies
Establishing the Ruby Sunday & Family & Furthering UNIT's Development
      5. 73 Yards
      6. Sunday Morning Run - Part 1
      7. Vengeance of the Sycorax - Part 2
      Establishing Ruby Sunday Mystery
      8. The Devil's Chord
      9. Snowfall
      Establishing Susan Twist Mystery
      10. Dot and Bubble
      11. An Explorers Twist
      Finale
      12. The Legend of Ruby Sunday - Setup
      13. The Power of Triad - Consequence
      14. Empire of Death - Resolution
Of course there should be development throughout the series of all the plot narratives but i think breaking it into noticeable chunks works well

@@bxr4231 I think the idea of bringing the Sycorax back to further Units development is brilliant. Last time round the government went too far, the Sycorax have a good reason for vengeance. Will Unit make the same mistakes, it would be a good way to show their character before the finale. Also having an episode in the finale to explore this Empire of Death would have been cool, given Sutekh more development as well. Nice list plus good titles 😂

I talked to my friend about this and we agreed that an order like this would fit and could be watched without breaking continuity:
0: Church on Ruby Road (Obviously this has to come first)
1: Space Babies (This was a bad premiere episode but this is clearly Ruby’s first adventure so watching in another order doesn’t make sense)
2: Rogue (The Carla scene makes more sense considering that it took place just after last episode ended)
3: 73 Yards (Doesn’t necessarily make more sense here because it is a stand alone story, but the conversation with Kate works slightly better)
4: Boom (First planet still makes sense here)
5: Dot and Bubble (Stand alone episode that can be put anywhere after Boom)
6: The Devil’s Cord (Placed here to build up the concepts of the finale similar to how Turn Left explained the threat of the series 4 finale)
7/8: The Legend of Ruby Sunday/ Empire of Death (Obviously the finale is at the end)

Today I watched Doctor Who in the order you recommended.
Even if Space Babies is the weakest episode, it has to stay at the beginning because it explained a lot of basic things for me as a "new" viewer. By that I mean not only the transition from CoRR, but also how the world we find ourselves in works. The moments between Doctor and companion are missing in Rouge. Maybe it would still work as episode 2.
    So my order would be
    0. Church on Ruby Road
    1. Space Babys

    3. 73 Yards
    4. Boom
    5. The Devils Chord

From a narrative point of view, the only thing needed is to swap around Rogue & Devil's Chord and the whole season's structure suddenly makes a lot more sense.
Rogue has explicit references to Space Babies, Space Babies is also the first episode where it snows, the first where his memory changes, ending back on Christmas day with her mother, etc. it makes no narrative sense to ever want to move Space Babies to any other slot than the one it was broadcast in.
Between Devil's Chord or Dot and Bubble being the final episode before the finale. Personally I think Devil's Chord would hit harder with having the most direct ties that go straight into the finale (mention of Susan (granddaughter), introduction of Harbinger, Ruby's snowstorm & hidden song, the one who waits almost here, etc. etc.) while Dot & Bubble only has the one mention of Susan Triad. It makes Devil's Chord into a third episode in what would then be the trilogy of final episodes.
(It's also just the most easy explanation, then switching Rogue and Devil's Chord around one for one is just an easy logistical choice to make)

    • @theoverallnerds
      @theoverallnerds  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

@@Smouv Yeah Space Babies being the first episode is definitely intended from the reasons you pointed out. My main issue with having it 1st is it kinda sucks as your introduction to the season 😂 So in terms of the quality of the season I think having it a little later makes the overall season look better. Of course for my way to work there would need to be changes, such as the Rogue refs. When it snows I dont think is as important, still fits. And when the doctors memory changes is fine any place in the season overall.
I do see the appeal of having The Devil's Chord as this sorta Utopia, where it's the start of a 3 parter. But I will say having all those vague things said RIGHT before finale might make the season feel rushed. You've gone from some Susan appearance to a convenient Susan name drop, meeting another of the pantheon, a harbinger rolling up and the title of the one who waits again. I think having one more episode/week to let that marinate for audiences would be nice. However, if you wanted to craft this sorta BIG 3 Parter finale then I understand why, I just feel D&B leads more naturally into TLORS. Thanks for the comment and watching 👍🏽

I thought about this the other day, and this is what I had:
Church On Ruby Road: I'd emphasize their inidividual loneliness a bit more though. And 15 would 100% find out who Ruby's mother is but then not tell her ASSUMING she would be disappointed her mother was just human. Then theres friction where theyre best of friends as long as they dont Go There but situations keep bringing it to the forefront.
Rogue: 15 is flippant and thinks Ruby will be fine. Then she gets trapped and didnt understand the ramifications of just activating battle mode (15 told her not to, after all)
Boom - Ruby ends up in real danger and its Ruby's first planet. She starts to understand the seriousness of travelling and second guesses it.
Space Babies - training the audience to see light then dark, Gatwa takes her to a safer place only to accidentally remind her of her abandonment issues which activates the snow for the first time. And Ruby discovers she can still call her mum, who asks if she's safe. Its after THIS 15 apologises, tells her that her mum is just a regular person but now he cant go back and wouldnt know where to find her. Ruby tells 15 she's happy her mother is no one, but is confused about the snow. So is 15. Now theyre on equal ground, he asks if she wants to join on permanently and she says "we did almost die" and he defines as it as "we also lived." "My family are gone but I do it for days like this." Ruby understands how much 15 needs a family and assumes he can keep her safe no matter what.
73 Yards - Trying desperately to keep it light, Gatwa steps on the thing and this time Ruby has to fend for herself. Now her abandonment from Space Babies doubles down and she's safe but no longer has her foster mum. Dramatic irony. She gets doctor back and REMEMBERS.
Dot and Bubble - The audience now expects a light one and we open with Lindy doing shenanigans (though if i had my way id make the whole episode about 15 anyway, change it so 15 thinks its a nice place that just doesnt like outsiders and keep the ending where 15 encounters a situation he can't solve. The audience now understands this is NOT a light one. All eps from here the stakes are raised.
Devils Chord - Gatwa is shaken from the racists and hoping to lighten things up he and ruby go see the beatles but the giggle reactivates his fear he can't win. Also the "one who waits" and Ruby's Song In Her Heart is what prompts 15 to actively investigate Ruby's situation. The chips are down now and 15 doesnt want to wait for the next godly threat. Again I'd change it so its less Maestro shenanigans and more Maestro is a background looming threat while Ruby is genuinely depressed about a lack of music. I'd have it so she connected to her birth mum through music and now music is gone and 15 & the beatles have to inspire Ruby to get her song back, and when she does that manifests as a Song In Her Heart that banishes Maestro.
Then Finale. 15 is afraid of the next god and is now convinced the mother is cloaked for a reason (and the show needs a better reason). But now it turns out the God Of Death has been following since WBY at the end of the universe (not sutekh, thats cheap nostalgia and name only) and Gatwa now feels like Death truly follows him. But to really bring the 60th full circle, God Of Death reignites the flux to 'finish the job' and 14's therapy gets tested in 15. And now 15 needs to find Ruby's Mum to keep her safe, because Ruby's memories have made the mother powerful and the pantheon feel she is the last hope to breaking Ruby's magic. (And make Ruby a more interesting character so this new found power matters to her. Ruby didnt get the snow from her mother, her mother got power from her and she got power from her mothers power and it caused a time loop effect like in 73 yards. And now finding the mother, not her name on a screen, is key to stopping the God Of Death. 15 resolves his inner conflict not with a goal of meeting susan that goes nowhere, but by bringing life back to Ruby (somehow in the past, maybe with the memory on ruby road he CAN actually go back and this time he gave Ruby's mother - or ruby - the power of memory somehow and that triggered the loop to begin with. But somehow 15 brings Life to Ruby and her Mother and Ruby finding her mother means not just meeting her but protecting her from death. (At this point im making it up on the spot because I forgot what I wrote last time and im starting to piece it together again). And through time shenanigans in order to reverse the god of death and the pantheon apocalypse and 15 truly defeats the flux this time, it also requires Ruby's mum to forget metting her, and now Ruby makes the hard choice not to try again. Her mother left her behind to protect her, and now Ruby is doing the same. She met her, she's just a person, and thats enough, and Ruby can stop glorifying her and leave her in peace - which will mean she's no longer a threat to the gods and she will be safe. Ruby then loses her powers as the chain is broken but she can still summon snow when singing because i dunno its a nice memory souvenir thing. But now she's no longer chasing the magical memories and childhood abandonment she leaves the doctor and its sad not because 15 cant open up but because they both accept Ruby has a Life on earth appreciating the mundane now and 15 never feels more alive than when he's saving the universe from apocalyptic threats so theres a fundamental rift now (and a good one, but 15 now absolved of the flux doesnt know what to do next, so reuniting with Susan feels like a good Next Time goal rather than ... something he seemingly wanted now and didnt happen.)

Your finale sounds wacky and insane, maybe in a good way 😂 the finale definitely needed something to wake it up. I like the idea of Ruby second guessing if she wants to travel, leading to her eventual departure. I also like the idea of a bit friction coming from the Doctor refusing to go back to when Ruby's mother left, I thought that was the direction they were originally gonna take. Also the focus on the doctor and they're thoughts on family is something I believe should have been central this season along with Ruby.

I'm actually in the camp that the episode order can't be fixed because there's too many underlying issues the series has as a whole that are shown evidently with most episodes having the same thing
    1. The Doctor is literally not there. He's incapacitated for 3 of the stories, 2 of which Ncuti Gatwa literally had scheduling issues, For 7 stories, not having an active or present Doctor is not good.
    2. Similar to #1, the Doctor is too passive. He doesn't "save the day" for the majority of the episodes, it's something or someone else doing it. Linking back to #1, the Doctor not having a presence makes his overall perception feel weak.
    3. They push too hard on fake out deaths and crying. The 15th Doctor has cried in nearly every episodes he's been and it loses its effect more and more every time. He cried 5 times in the finale and I personally stopped feeling sympathy because like #2, the Doctor looks weak, vulnerable, and immature. Ruby's death is faked out 3 times throughout the series. I know other companions have "died" and come back, but paired with trying to make the Doctor more emotional, it lost all its impact and surprise.
In the end I like the idea of rearranging the order of the episodes, but the series is too short and is filled with too many flaws to do such thing.
Great video btw. Keep up the good work!

    • @theoverallnerds
      @theoverallnerds  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Interesting points, for #1 whilst it's true Sex Ed S4 had an impact I would say Ncutis presence is always felt, apart from 73 Yards. In D&B the main takeaway is that final scene when 15 physically shows up and for Boom whilst he's restricted his performance is still a stand out.
For #2 I understand that to be fair, he doesn't save the day in a traditional sense but his impact is still felt. I think he saves the day in Space Babies, unless I'm mistaken. In TDC, it's the beetles, but you can argue that scene in the cafe with the Doctor is what inspired them to finish the song. In Boom, his heart to heart with the AI Dad is what leads to the systems demise. 73 yards... he's a no show 😂. D&B he leads Lindy to the safe spot, but to be fair he can't convince them to get on the Tardis, so maybe that's a fail. In Rogue he technically forms the plans to capture them but messes the Ruby part up, but again, because of his words to Rogue and the relationship he formed Rogue is willing to sacrifice himself. And the finale he brings death to death, blah blah. I think whilst traditionally he save the day, his heart is able to impact characters putting them in the position to do it, so we can at least argue he has an impact on the story. Take him out the only stories that stay the same are 73 and D&B.
For #3 it is true. I think they're trying to show how this Doctor has healed, he's more open with his emotions, in that sense, great, makes some sense. But like you said it still reduces the impact of those scenes. I will say it plays into the characteristic that this Doctor has a lot of heart, I feel it's their biggest weapon. I thought the Ruby fake outs would also lead to something but they didn't... so yeah that part sorta sucked but maybe next season 🤷🏾‍♂️
Overall, you're right there's a lot of underlying issues, I find that the themes of family aren't written well throughout the season and when connecting with the characters, Ruby's family plot seems plain and the Doctors views on family isn't given enough time for it to be relevant which is weird when it's a major theme. I also think the mystery plot isn't built up as well as it could have, and the finale could have been more impactful and more creative when crafting Sutekhs plan.
I agree the series is too short as well, I think think longer episodes would have been the easiest way to fix that. 8 episodes you could at least have increased your runtime, allow more character development and other things but oh well 🤷
Sorry for the long response but it was a great comment from you 😂 thanks for watching
