I had my gastric bypass in 2001, and when preparing for it one of my doctors at the time told me something I never forgot - "Your stomach has no idea what time it is, why you are eating cereal for dinner or having Chinese food at 2 am. Your stomach has no concept of time and doesn't care when or what you eat." And it's totally true of course. Now as you get older, naturally what you eat may not necessarily agree with your stomach but that's different than what the doctor was trying to get across. This idea you can't eat this or that at specific times of the day is ridiculous. The whole concept of "breakfast for dinner" is backwards since the stomach doesn't care about time but it's a great idea nonetheless isn't it? :)

This is the way. I lived in the UK for nearly five years in my early 20s and traveled Europe extensively. My go to move in the UK and Europe was always to ask the locals about the local beer and food specialties. I missed some of the touristy things in favor of experiencing the true local culture. And yes, Brits, don’t be shy about asking locals or servers about how to enjoy foods. The Jolly boys got this part right - when eating BBQ (especially in Texas), cutlery is for the sides, meat is eaten with the hands. Some old school places in Texas (Lockhart) didn’t even serve sides and had signs reading “no forks or knives available.” When in Rome…

It looks like this restaurant did the biscuits & gravy properly by cutting the biscuits in half so the sausage gravy can soak into the biscuits and make it a whole lot better than pouring the gravy over the biscuits hard outside, as I've said in your previous video when Millie tried it with her mom.

The only problem for James and Millie is that the UK doesn't have sausage like our breakfast sausage. Their sausage has different spices (kinda heavy on the cloves and not enough sage) that makes it less than perfect for making true sausage gravy. Their best bet is to find a recipe online for American breakfast sausage and make it themselves at home. It's really not as hard as it might sound, as long as you can get bulk ground pork and some common herbs and spices. When making sausage gravy, everyone that I know, uses bulk ground sausage and not the links anyway.

It also depends on the person and their biscuits.
Like my mom's home made biscuits are so amazing bo butter is needed and they're so fluffy that no need to cut them in half. I just dump a good pile of gravy on top of them. I'm glad I learned how to make my mom's biscuits.
As for the gravy for me it all depends if it does or doesn't have sausage in it. If it does I tone down the salt and pepper. If it doesn't I may add more salt and pepper to taste. To me too much pepper and salt actually ruins the taste. Believe me because I've known some people to have dumped their normal amount of salt and pepper in the gravy while cooking it but when it came to eating it I wass un-edible for me after the first bite.

@@ahoyforsenchou7288 America is the only place in the world where our "breakfast sausage" is a thing, and I don't know why, It's great. But even in countries like Germany(THE sausage people), the sausages are limited to a kielbasa/summer sausage style. Idk if they eat it for breakfast, but no one else makes the stuff we Americans call "breakfast sausage." Ironically, we're also the only country that makes white gravies like the kind for biscuits and gravy or for chicken fried steak.

At the very least try butter salt and pepper or butter and sugar never eat grits plain. How good biscuit and gravy is can really depend on the recipe, cook and quality of the sausage. When you have a large family and less money it is a tasty filling meal. sorry if anyone has already commented this: biscuits and gravy would have been enjoyed at like 5:30 am before getting out to tend the fields and animals of small farms originally. Of course very few of us live that kind of life these days and don't blame you for thinking it's pretty heavy and hearty for a breakfast food...this was by design to fuel hard-working farmers in the fields, and would have helped stretch sausage further. sausage itself being a way to use the odds and ends kept after the primal cuts of the hog would have been used or sold for income with additional salt as preservative. I like to think, if the pig had a name from being lovingly fed and tended, you would try to extend the meat by creating dishes such as this! :D the gravy is a way of creating something from the grease that renders out of the sausage rather than wasting it. You can also make biscuits in the morning as they don't require proofing/rising like bread.

a good sausage gravy starts with browning the sausage, then remove the sausage and keep sausage grease in the pan. then add any seasonings, heavy cream, flour, and anything else to taste. (black pepper is very common) keep stirring it while slowing adding the flour until it's a rich creamy color and slightly watery. (it'll thicken up quickly).

Fun Video. Foods of the south. Amazing what they came up with.
You may know, but a little background.
if you look at the southern foods - Especially like grits and Biscuits and gravy, they have a history.
Many in the south worked in agriculture or other very labor intensive jobs and we not wealthy.
    If you look at it:
    Biscuits - Flour, butter, milk . . .
Gravy - Flour, milk (and maybe some sausage, pepper, sage, bacon).
Would be inexpensive yet warm, filling and calories to get you from 5am to noon time.
    Enjoy your travels

Let's start with this.... Americans can eat and do eat breakfast food for supper supper food for breakfast. You eat what you want to you're not going to be judged for it. I wouldn't have survived college we're not not for leftover pizza that I ate for breakfast.
Breakfast in America Mary from person to person. There is no such thing as an American breakfast. You're going to have for breakfast and option of some kind of pork bacon ham or sausage, eggs cooked however you like them including omelettes scrambled fried. The only thing I don't usually see is poached not many people eat poached eggs and the us. You're going to have some kind of bread or toast if I'm getting waffles or pancakes I don't usually order any kind of bread to go with my breakfast. And then you have options of sides. Some people like sliced tomatoes some people like fruit, others want hash browns or grits. We just believe if it's there and we think it up will try it
As far as southern breakfast goes, 1 traditional gravy has some sausage bits or in it or it was cooked with some sausage or bacon grease to give it a little flavoring. My son's a vegetarian so he makes his white gravy without any kind of meat product. He just seasons it with salt and pepper.
Try different foods 1 different ways and decide what you like. Don't let society dictate it to you.
By the way many people's favorite time to eat breakfast is late at night after they've been out with their friends or they've come home from a ball game or that's one of the things about living in America that makes it worth surviving hurricanes and tornadoes LOL.

you want a breakfast to be a large hardy meal. 1. because you haven't eaten for a long period while you were asleep and even before that. your body is now starving for fuel and you need to feed it. (this is why you should never skip breakfast) 2. you want lots of carbs and proteins to give you both short term and long term energy so that you can start work for the day and carry you for several hours until at least lunch when you can refuel again. A hardy mean like biscuits and sausage gravy is a great breakfast (just add more proteins like bacon or ham or more sausage).
that being said. you can eat any meal, any time of day, as long as you have a mixture of carbs, proteins, and things that will give vitamins and minerals. (the choice is usually veggies, but can be anything that gives you them.)
