      When you mention the wackyness, it reminds me of one thing said in the commentary of "Marge Be Not Proud" (I think) that they want to avoid a situation where the show is something they could have done in live action. Except for the fan, there's very little in The Homer they Fall that couldn't have been done on TV.
      Makes me wonder if any superfans have ever tried to recreate a SImpsons episode in Live Action.

    As always, it's a pleasure to see your reviews. I also prefer Homerpalooza, being one of my all time favourite episodes. I would like to add some ideas to yours. Homerpalooza is also about Homer's middle age crisis, being music the area where he starts feeling disconnected from "the cool" (being young). After Bart shouts at him at the very beginning and he goes to the music shop and doesn't recognize anything there, he starts to see how he has grown up. He even remembers the dialogue with his father being a teenager. It's interesting to see that Bart and Lisa here are put in the place of teenagers, clearly to make a parallel with homer's youth with his father, and since the Simpsons lack children in this stage of life (Lolo from Poochie could have been useful to this purpose). When he is choosen as a show himself, he feels "in" again due to the fact that cool young people are hanging out with him. When death is really near after the visit to the doctor, he chooses to accept his age and the things he has achieved. In contrast, the box episode, as you say, is about Moe and not Homer. I also dislike it because I find it sadder, since the episode seems to talk (as opposite with the other) about letting go and the good old times and missed opportunities.

    Another good vid. I agree with your choice, although "The Homer They Fall" has one of my favorite obscure little moments -- Homer's nickname being "The Southern Dandy." Oh, and the "Kid Gruesome/Kid Moe" thing, too. But can i take a moment to defend the "Rover Hendrix" scene?
    (1.) Homer -- a human being -- is at a vet. Funny.
    (2.) The vet, beautifully played by Harry Shearer in full "joyless authoritarian" mode, gives him advice like, "Rest your beer on your head or your genitals." Also funny.
    (3.) Homer, ostensibly trying to be hip, tries to channel his teenage rebellious side and uses the most outdated slang possible. "Dyin' would be a stone groove!" Again, funny.
    (4.) But what of Rover Hendrix himself? Technically, in 1996, it would have been possible -- just barely -- for a dog purchased as a puppy by Jimi Hendrix to still be alive. That in itself is kind of amazing to consider, certainly worthy of 3 seconds of television time. The fact that Jimi named his dog the most cliched thing ever is also sort of funny, as is the fact that the dog looks so worn out. But what makes the joke work for me is that Homer's question to the doctor -- "Got any messages for Jimi Hendrix?" -- is purely rhetorical. He doesn't expect an answer. In fact, he stands there with a smug look on his face, basking in the awesome thing he just said. But he isn't allowed to enjoy this victory for even a second. The doctor has an immediate response to him, and it's deflating to Homer's sense of bravado. That's comedy.

    • @NaughtyCockWildDog69
      @NaughtyCockWildDog69 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Technically Jimi Hendrix's dog's name is a reference to his song "Fire" where he says "Move over Rover and let Jimi take over!" Just a fun rock and roll factoid :P

    I'd go with The Homer They Fall, mostly because it's a lot more memorable for me. When I think of Homerpalooza, I remember it in vague bits of the story: Homer starts a career of being shot with a cannon, but it starts damaging his health and he has to decide between safety and popularity. When I think of The Homer They Fall, I remember a lot more of the events that happens. I remember how Homer ends up starting boxing, I remember Moe's history, I remember why Moe eventually offers up Homer to fight Dredrick Tatum. I remember a lot more of the jokes, like Homer being exhausted after throwing a single punch, and Tatum stopping a prison riot by telling everyone to shut up. And honestly the moral quandary felt a lot more earned because of the character interactions.

      Yeah, lol. I also noticed how Drederick Tatum looked different when shown in earlier seasons (such as the fight in "Lisa vs 8th commandment") than he did later (such as "The Homer they fall").
      I liked both episodes. I was in college during the mid 90s and the way that episode captured the party-goers at the palooza festival (such as 2:43) is so similar to how others my age were back then. That depressing grunge rock style, their clothes, expressions, they looked at the pessimistic dark side of things but enjoyed doing it and dancing to the beat of Smashing pumpkins, Nirvana, and Nine inch nails

    I far prefer The Homer They Fall. Where I find Homerpalooza to have dated in much the same way "new Simpsons" episodes with very contemporary references do. It lacks the timelessness that really most early episodes have. Moreover, I really do find it gimmicky and lacking in much real substance or genuinely funny jokes. The Homer They Fall not only has more by way of genuine plot, it's also got one of the most memorable funny sequences of the season with Tatum's parole hearing, and on the whole I feel there's far more to keep watching for.

    The Homer They Fall is the better one, it's a timeless episode that works whenever, it's about Homer and Moe just having fun, when you think back on what makes The Simpsons great, it's the fun that keeps you coming back, Homer boxing is enough but Moe being a former boxer is another piece of the puzzle of Moe, Redman on the Soundtrack with Why Can't We Be Friends while they enter the ring, Homer taking those hits make you feel like he might die without a doctor telling you like Homerpalooza, we get it cause the hits are brutal, I rarely go back to Homerpalooza compared to The Homer They Fall cause it is so 90's which I hate cause it's so much of a snapshot, I wasn't a fan of those bands back then and those teenagers are not funny on repeat, I'm gonna be honest, I like the action of The Homer They Fall, you made the wrong call cause Homerpalooza is what people hate so much about the Simpsons now, overblown guest stars barely adding to the plot, just saying one line and moving on, was there a reason for Sonic Youth and Peter Frampton and that pig in the grand scheme? No but Tatum going to murder Homer in the ring writes itself and makes for better canon because he can meet him again in the future and it may go south or they may be friends, can't do that with 90's now aged up Sonic Youth, Cypress Hill and Peter plus who cares these days as a young fan of Simpsons tuning in to keep it going along with the old fans, only repeat guest stars fans care about at this point is Jon Lovitz, Al Brooks(Scorpio), Danny Devito(Herbert Powell) and Michael Jackson(dead)

      Homerpalooza is about much more than music, altough it's what someone would first notice in the surface. It's also about someone's (Homer's in this case) middle age crisis and how to cope with it. It's the episode where Homer struggles (through the trends in music) with the idea that he is no longer young but has lots of things to enjoy in his life.

    Yeah I agree with you on homerpalooza but then I have a soft spot for 90’s grunge and gen x teen references despite having been born 1991 and not really getting the jokes till later. I argue that the central message of homerpalooza, that times will change and that it’s best to just accept that someday what your with won’t be it anymore, is much more relatable to your average person. Ironically, the 90’s grunge almost adds to the message as the years go on, as the episode becomes more and more dated it only reaffirms it’s central message.

    I've always prefered the Homer they Fall, but that's probably just because I'm a boxer in real life and Rocky and Raging Bull are some of my favourite movies.
    Nice video! You might have a new subscriber.

    The jokes are way better and it's nice to remember that, despite millions of comments by kids in youtube, the 90s were not a sunshine rollecoaster made of lollipops.

    Love the video, as always. Interestingly enough, most of the thing you point to as low moments are some of my favorites. Rover Hendrix, Burns buys Ticketmaster, great stuff. And I never cared for the Moe fan ending the boxing match.

    Homerpalooza is my favorite for sure. I’m from that generation that lived it, and I went to the festival it’s spoofed on three times. It is a very accurate depiction of what it was like.
    The other episode is still really funny. The parole hearing joke is one of my all-time series favorites.

      Yeah, lol, it is. And I liked Grampa's "I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what's it now seems weird and scary, it happened to me, it'll happen to yoou"

  • @Rubberman202
    @Rubberman202 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wait, Homerpalooza is the episode where that "I used to be with it" scene is from? I was reminded of that clip not long ago, and I thought it was so on-the-nose with a concept that can be applied to every generation that it quickly became one of my favorite clips from classic Simpsons. Despite seeing this episode at least once, I forgot a lot about what was actually in it apparently... Like, I'm giving the edge to Homerpalooza just for that perfect clip.

    Well I’m personally going with Homer, they fall. It just feels like a more energetic story to me. Plus it has some really good jokes. Tatum is really funny in this episode. He’s usually not very funny but in this episode he is truly hilarious! I actually love the line about “Making Orphans out of Homer’s children!” I consider it dark humor! However I respect your opinion.
