    Homer and Lisa should have just taken their gambling earnings and used that to finance the horse. Then they could've continued enjoying both hobbies. I know that's not the point, I just thought that, in hindsight, that could've worked. I'm really enjoying your channel by the way. = ]

    One of the things he forgot to mention is that Lisa gets a pony is one of the few episodes that we get to see Lisa as a little girl. Yes, I know she’s only eight years old, but how often is she actually written that way?

    • @imlaughing2death
      @imlaughing2death ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, I feel that's why so many people have soured on her character over the years, she's rarely written with the child like mirth the way Bart usually is.

    Maybe I would go with Lisa's Pony. That ending where Homer walks in to the sunset with Lisa on his back always gets me. Plus that joke where homer comes in, the saw hits him in the head, he lays in his bed only to be woken up a second latter. Thanks for the video again.

    This video ended up taking longer than expected, since I went on vacation right in the middle of the production cycle, and that slowed everything down. That, and for some reason, I couldn't stop writing and this review ballooned to over 13 minutes! During animation, I kept asking myself, "Why did I ramble for this long?" :o

    I'd have to go with Lisa's Pony. The conclusion in particular just felt so much more satisfying. Lisa has been asking for a pony pretty much since the show began. And yet, when she's faced with the reality of what her having a pony means for Homer, she gives it up. And it's a hard choice for her to make. You pointed it out yourself. Sometimes love isn't just about hanging out with someone and having cute interactions. Sometimes love is about making sacrifices for the happiness of another person.

    Instead of getting another job, Homer should’ve just gambled with Lisa to pay for it. Two episodes in one, problem solved.

    If there's one REALLY subtle bit I love about Lisa's Pony it's the video bit, where Homer sees himself shoo Lisa away when she tries to get his attention. She makes this adorable disappointed mumble, and present-day Homer replicates it the same way, clearly sad for her and ashamed of himself. I suppose it's a cute technical way of Homer relating to his daughter, if a few years late.

    So I just stumbled over your vid accidently.
    It was really beautifully made and the music fit so well (reminded me of Kingdom Hearts).
    The whole vid was really heartwarming in the end^^
    The first 2 minutes I almost started crying a little because of these 2 beautiful episodes and their topic, the Lisa and Homer moments, the music, the way you analysed them.
    It was just wonderful :)
    These old episodes really have something charming, especially those with Homer and Lisa.
    I subscribed.

  • @DrMattPhillips
    @DrMattPhillips 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Lisa's Pony could have solved Homer and Lisa's bonding not being as visible by having Homer and Lisa spending time with the horse at the start of the episode but as the financial strains became more apparent Homer has to take a second job and has less time for Lisa and Lisa realises that it's the time they spent together that she enjoyed, with the horse being just a catalyst for that.

    In Lisa's Pony Homer is the one trying to bridge the gap and improve his relationship with Lisa . Like you said he's a bit of an oblivious jerk in the later episode but despite that and despite the distance between them after the events of Lisa's Pony she's very aware of how much he loves her even if he's not really showing it at the time, making her be the one to put in the effort.

    • @razkable
      @razkable 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep...lisa doesnt need to bond to know her dad loves her...hes trying to buy her love without showing it to her...its more subtle and realistic...most fathers wont spend time on a couch with their daughters lets be real...lisas pony makes more sense...homers out of ideas but hes found one way to help his girl out..he just didnt think ahead is all..to me that makes it more adorable when lisa gives up the pony at the end....their bond grew without the pony...in the gambling episode....its more about making sure dumb homer understands gambling isnt worth your daughters love...the ending is so hollywood bs it sucks...it isnt about their relationship anymore...its about homer risking it all on a bet ...its so weird...its about only homer at the end...the other episode starts off with homer making a tough choice and ends with lisa making a tough choice..its balanced...its about both of them...

  • @drebone1986

    Lisa the Greek is better because Lisa finally gives a damn about other people in Springfield besides Marge and Maggie, it reminds me of real people who does normal boring to outsiders things but bonding to the people in on it, plus the football references make me smile, most people back then in America wouldn't dare shoot down football fandom and obsessing over gambling, very rare then and done almost perfect for something so rarely done

  • @TheFlipsta97
    @TheFlipsta97 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Personally I'd say Lisa's pony is my preferred episode. Allow me to explain:
    This comes from a purely personal standpoint. My father was always an absentee workaholic. I rarely spent time with him. I can remember split screening MoH a few times, riding bikes once or twice, and him taking me to see the Simpsons movie when I was like 11 or so. But I (and I'm ashamed to admit this) kinda resented him for it. I never really had an active father figure in my life, I had to learn so many things first hand, growing up was an uphill battle for me.
    It wasn't untill my bachelor's year in college I understood he cared. The workload was too severe and I had to quit work, hat in hand in hand to ask him for money to pay the bills. He was more than happy to oblige, but I see him working himself ragged and I feel incredibly guilty. I've got my job lined up, and once I've handed in my master's project I'm forcing him to retire. I don't care what he has to say, I'm making him, I'll pay the bills, I'll be able to afford it after all.
    Worried I see myself falling into that same trap however. As lucrative and control systems engineering is, I have heard horror stories about the hours and work/life balance. If thing work out with my girlfriend and we end up with kids I'd wanna be there for them, but id also wanna provide for them. In a way, I see myself, and my father reflected in homer. Thus, this particular episode will always have a place in my heart.

    Lisa the Greek definitely stands on its own regardless if you're a football fan or not imo. When I first saw this episode as a kid this was long before I ever saw an entire football game. I didn't grow up on it and don't really watch it now. This episode still sucked me right in. I loved seeing Homer and Lisa bond for a change and enjoyed a few jokes here and there as well. As a non football fan I still found this to be a highlight of the season.

    I love horses and hate football, and even I think Lisa the Greek is the stronger episode. In Lisa's Pony, Homer just buys Lisa's affection, and him working to keep the pony is him trying to keep the 'proof' that he is a good father. In Lisa the Greek, Homer starts spending time with Lisa for selfish reasons, but in the end he realises that his daughter is more important to him than gambling. I love the scene in the bar where Homer jumps up cheering, and Moe says, "What are you so happy about, Homer? You didn't win anything," but all Homer cares about is that Lisa loves him.

    im gonna keep watching and try to figure out what kind of simpsons fan you are, and to that matter, which kind I AM, so i can better guess which episode you're gonna pick, and why....ps have you done something on/with one of my all time favorite episodes, maybe my favorite (or at least the funniest one, but maybe not as heartfelt or something that reminds me of my youth and such, so not FAVORITE, but funniest one..), GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER? .... that is a GREAT episode, and it's surprising because it's nowhere near the golden years... i would suggest you go back and watch that episode again (preferably high or drunk, because when the dog says CHEWY it's just sooooo much funnier.. lol...TRUST MEEEEE!!!)

  • @Sawta
    @Sawta 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I haven't watched the entire video yet, but I would argue that the difference between episodes comes down to this:
    Lisa's pony is a story about what a parent would do for their kid.
    Lisa the greek is a story about what a kid would do for their parent.
    Personally, I can relate to both, and honestly, I think both hit a little too close to home for me, whether it be a parent working too many hours to make enough money, or the lengths I'd be willing to go to in order to win the attention and approval of a parent. I guess in a way, I would argue that both are bad _and_ good because they both remind me too much of my own life. Bad in that I am reminded of those things, good in that both episodes did such a great job in portraying those issues so clearly.
    I don't find either situation to be particularly pleasurable, so I don't really rank one "above" the other, but I appreciate both of the episodes.

    It’s a difficult one. I do love how Homer and Lisa get along in Lisa the Greek, but Lisa’s Pony has some of the funniest jokes. Bart in particular absolutely kills me. First there’s the way he laughs when he finds out Homer’s working at the Kwi Ki Mart, then when Marge tells Lisa no one’s going to make her give up her pony: “I can make her. Just give me five minutes alone with her.” 🤣🤣

    That music that is playing in the background during Lisa the Greek is the same music being played in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

    I agree with your conclusion, probably because I see "Lisa the Greek" as the conclusion to "Lisa's Pony."
    In the one with the pony, Homer realizes he's drifting from his daughter, so he tries to connect to her as Homer do; with absolutely no consideration of consequence. In the end, Lisa realizes how far her dad would go for her, and loves him for it, but also realizes he might go too far sometimes. Because Homer. (Six days [episodes] later...)
    In the one with the football, Lisa reaches out to Homer, trying to connect with him on his level. Lisa however, understands consequence. She rides the gambling high for a while, but when she realizes that her dad will take pretty much everything too far, she doesn't know how to feel, but decides to love him anyway... At a safe distance. Because Lisa.
    Both of these episodes are great on their own, but together they define the relationship between Lisa and Homer for the first time, and for rest of the series. I don't think it was a coincidence that these episodes came in the same season in this order. In the first two seasons, Lisa and Homer didn't have much interaction. Season 3 however, corrected that oversight of the writers.
    These two episodes, more than any other episodes imo, truly show how Homer feels about Lisa (ponies), and how Lisa feels about Homer (gambling), respectively. As far as I'm concerned, this is some of the best character development this show has ever done.

      I disagree, the show is at it's peak from Series Four to Series Twelve. Series thirteen is a MAJOR quality drop, that never really changes the further on you go, barring a few episodes.

      @@TheSmart-CasualGamer I feel like I'm in a minority. I really liked Dude, Where's My Ranch? And no one else seems to like it. I just thought it had some really funny jokes and Everybody Hates Ned Flanders is classic. That was near the end of Season 14. Also, I've heard people say that Season 13 is the best middle years season (that's sort of 11-18).

    bart and grandpas funny exchanges and grandpa winning in the end was so funny in lisas pony...i love that...simple concept...great execution lol...talk about a weird episode with 2 sets of characters bonding that you dont see much of together...putting bart and marge shopping together is too easy...video games bart and grandpa is a weird harder combination to pull off...and they made it work so well..grandpa actually improves and impresses his grandson and it isnt 1 set piece...its a bunch of short clips.....marge never has to learn a lesson from bart getting humiliated in the mall...its just making fun of bart...thats it...its mean and a waste of time....cause they couldnt fill 22 minutes....but bart did have to learn that even grandpas can improve at video games in lisas pony and bart helps tell lisa that homers struggling.... that felt like the side plot mattered in the episode and wasnt added on due to low run time..its genius

      Inside A Cartoonist's Mind I use Anime Studio for the image manipulation, and then cut the pieces together (and add music) in Sony Vegas. Anime Studio is technically animation software, but I find it really easy for moving stuff around on the screen wherever I want them.

    When I first saw this comparison, I thought "gee, why not compare Lisa's Pony to Saddlesore Galactica, since they're both episodes where Simpsons family members get an equine" before immediately realizing that Lisa's Pony would win because it doesn't have freaking elves in it.

    I like the flaws from Lisa's Pony much better considering that she's being selfish rather than Homer from the other end from Lisa the Greek. Still sticking with Lisa's Pony :) both good episodes though.

    I like Lisa the Greek more. It's more heartbreaking when Homer oblivious selfishness catches up with him over daddy/daughter day because them two getting along the whole episode was so fun to watch prior. From a personal perspective, I understand football related humor way more than equestrian humor

    I personally like Lisa the Greek more because it reminds me a lot of my relationship with my dad. I got into sports kinda late in my childhood (I think I started paying attention when I was like, sixteen or seventeen) but my dad was happy about it and started taking me to baseball and football games. Thankfully my dad's not nearly as bad as Homer (not by a long shot), but there's something more personally connective to me in Lisa the Greek.
