- To Kill a Dead Man is a short film made in 1994 by the trip hop group Portishead.
The theme can be found on both the 1995 compilation album Glory Times and the 1994 CD single "Sour Times". The music video for "Sour Times" also uses footage from the film.
A still from the film is featured on the cover of their album Dummy and several other stills appear in the CD booklet. A miniature image of the poster for the film is visible in the upper left corner at the back of this album.

PORTISHEAD - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
I found a summary of the plot on the internet. Essentially, the guy who got shot hired the assassin to fake his own death in order to drive his wife insane. That's why you see her in a straight jacket (the cover of Dummy) and in the hospital replaying his "death" in her mind. After her recovery, however, she then hires the same assassin to kill her husband and get her revenge. At the end the husband realizes he let the man who is going to kill him into his car, and his wife gets the last laugh.
Waooo..thanks so much for your explanation. I was kindly mad trying to lookfor the meaning of this video. By the way, it is one of the best songs ever played!
Y’all couldn’t just get a divorce like normal people?
😑
@@zulmachorressinclair2551 Same - I couldn't for the life of me work out the meaning either, haha! Thank gods for Nightflyer, now we can all rest in peace...🪦
She isn't wearing a straitjacket though on the cover of Dunny... She's wearing the same outfit in the beginning scene when she exits the building. Looks like some sort of traditional Chinese dress.
Not so, Mr Bond 😎
Why haven't Portishead ever been asked to write a Bond theme tune? The world needs it.
Bond is boring and dated tbh
@@miked6083 Well it's true. The world has moved on. There are much more interesting spy themed material out there.
Sour Times was used as a musical motif in the 1998 film Killing Time, which was about how a covert female assassin spends her day leading up to the killing she’s been hired to commit.
That’s about as close as we’ll get unfortunately.
Same reason they didn't choose Radiohead's "Spectre" song, the public reason being it was "too dark", but the proper reason being it's not conventional enough to their eyes and therefore not streamable.
I have said the same thing for years and as recently as last week. 👆
3:06 the iconic album cover for dummy
This reminds me of how dark and noir the mid '90s were mostly 1994 and 1995
The film student-meets-spy-movie-vibe is so nice, I could live there.
What's not to love about Portishead? Wonderfully haunting.
Always, expected, even after so many years, insanely loved 🙏🙏❤️❤️
Thank God I discovered their truly genious music first...
Hey from 2022. Love this music through the years. it is a masterpiece
This is kinda like a hidden underground cult short film, something like that. A quite strange and special piece of art. I found it when a I saw "Long Hello and Short Goodbye". I've been listening to Portishead since at least 20 years ago or even more. Now is 2022 and I still love it.
Beth is so stunningly beautiful!
I have sought this for 13 years. Thanks Siddius.
25 years later …
90's :D so cool to be part of it.
this was amaze when i saw it when it came out and these many years later still rocked my world.
AHHHH! The awesomeness is blinding me to the current, and last 20 years, or culture.
The 21th century has been terrible so far, the mess already started around 1998-2000. I live for those years right before.
afrer all this years ,still love it
no one was gonna tell me this existed? wow. ❤
Awesome. I always knew they had a short film which was rumored to have gotten them signed, but I had never seen it before. Thanks! Superb!
I might still have a promotional poster for the album that was a mock-up of a movie poster for "To Kill A Dead Man". It was a cool poster I got while working at a record store back when the album came out. This album really hit everyone like a cupid's arrow from nowhere -so fresh and refreshing while also a throwback.
The music in 7:50 is just perfect
gracias man saludos de buenos aires!
Por qué gracias lol
Doesn't get more brilliant than this!
Classic. Video made me buy a bad ass trenchcoat back in 1998.
Really great the noir atmosphere.. No words...
This is amazing. Wow. Portishead's work forever possesses so many forms of incredible. In some places the soundtrack reminds me of Where The World Begins and Ends by The Dears.
This is just utterly brilliant.
I thought it was beautiful before i knee exactly what the plot was then after reading more about it I was blown away!. No need for the disclaimer. It was amazing!
Still a Master Piece!
Beth Gibbons look soooo much like Kristin Scott Thomas!!
I WAS JUST THINKING THAT!!!
Waoo.. I have to seen it 3 times to understand the hole scene... It is a fantastic short film..
I love when you're trying to watch something that commands your full attention and that wonderful spinning circle keeps popping up it the middle of the screen. It's like your internet provider is giving your concentration a much needed rest.
Legend has it @adamclark52 is still watching that spinning wheel to this day
Did you ever finish the video?
Early 2010s internet problems
It's on the PNYC dvd.
La razón del Trip-Hop...

Never seen that chess move before, hahaha.
All jokes aside, love the band, love this video, This is awesome.
Hace años no veía este cortometraje! por favor que banda increíble!!!
This is great-It's inspiring for an intro/outro track for some dark alley breaks mix.
I'm digging it. You guys did a good job with this.
I have those gloves
This is my favorite topic.!!!
Film Noir. Very cool. Bang bang.
keep on with music, you're awesome!
As they say in France, Wow.
as they say in The Netherlands too: Wow!
We say it backwards in Ireland - wow
we actually say it in the US like: wow
Always loved this track.
MAGNIFICENT!!!!
is it me or Beth Gibbons is hot as hell???
it's not just you...
Iearn to love it. It's the only thing going today.
Very "Davidlynchie."
lynchian
@@amandapadillal lynch-esque.
This is the most incredible band in the world
Very Harry Palmer-esc, you can also hear the influence of John Barry in PH they are both legendary composers.
How did i not know about this all these years!
excelente.. hacia mucho que no lo veia
Just think that NO OTHER artist had this concept idea in the 90s (produce their own short film then write a soundtrack and a main theme song for it. )
this song is called "Theme from To Kill a Man"
Theme From To Kill A Dead Man
Great short
Its worth watching To Kill A Dead Man, Portishead's own film noir from 1994 ( I think). A still frame from that short film was used as the cover for Dummy and the film acts as a long, noir-soaked music video.
I fact this sounds much like some Morricone music (the Sicilian clan and some other).
This was years ago...how come I have only just found it? Haunting, original...maybe they will do more visual stuff.
estuve mucho tiempo buscando este corto.
Esta en el dvd de Roseland
etsi etsi... niw8eis. bravo Billy.
Nice choice in the cars
Great!
Well made film with chilling music, but if the plan was just to drive the poor wife crazy, why did they commision the sniper in the first place? The betrayed Beth was too confused to notice him. The husband could have just pretend to be shot.
Exactly my thoughts about the plot. However the film's aesthetics, in particular the music, are very attractive and well done.
It has the same feeling as "La Jetée", but with greater music. Or maybe it's me that's not used to black and white, sob.
Speaking frankly, the OST is much better than the film in a whole :) That's why Portishead became a music band, but not the cinema studio :)
the tribute to rhythm symphony orchestra music became a musical type of which just the portishead have the culture to appear. micalizzi, moricone and bacalov and the rest invented a type of music that alone represents the present. also mr armstrong tried to score some music of this kind. i think it is worthy to blend orchestra sort of chords, vibratos, pizzicatos, pianissmo with mean guitar. they are the best.
genius
I'm gonna take this very personally...
The music in 06:30 is inspired of From Karkheh to Rein by Majid Entezami
Ah this is so cool I just learned abt this short film, I fucking love Portishead!!
I don't know what the f happened but I love Portishead.
Damn I can't edit text. Anyways, been a fan since late 90's and triphop, the whole genre, is so sick and smooth and complicated.
Here we are now
Aww - Bless.
Yes.
Cinematográfico
Greatest band ever. Please EQ it lower next time to avoid clipping. Thanks for posting this!
reminds me of the crazy shit the Mad Beat Chemist used to play on his live show.
why Portishead work keep on reminding me of silent hill 3:05
This original version is much better than de album version :D
i
@Ironpyrites Er, John Barry composed the music for the first Harry Palmer movie, The Ipcress File. Check out the opening credits here with added tunage from the coffee grinder!
dedicated to you...
Be weary around these trip-hop people. They may sing softly, but putting a hit out on someone is just how they do business.
Portishead: The Professionals
@Nebulisation it was called amp i have it on vhs :D
hello . i was wondering if anyone had any clue what camera they used to film 'To Kill a Dead Man.' (or any of their music videos really) please lemme know anything you might know! thank you
The beginning of the song reminds Parasite Eve and the end of video reminds Silent Hill

Ok, es oficial: me obsesioné con Portishead
The visuals, soundtrack, and atmosphere are great but I have absolutely no idea what is going on
@WeekendWasteMonster
to be honest I kinda got the same feeling , but i am still not sure about the ending ...
Les preuves s'accumulent ! Plus je cherche et plus l'idée que Silent Hill est une version vidéo-ludique de l'oeuvre de portishead devient evidente
Are there anymore films that Portishead made?
i love it, but totally don't understand!! could anybody explain it?
