What people tend to forget is that accepting a pay cut for the sake of winning more championships might actually make you more money in the long run by becoming a more valuable overall product on the market, e.g. jersey sales, ad revenues etc. Supposedly MJ is currently making more money through his deals with Nike and others annually than during his entire career combined. KD, when you look at pure skill and ability as a basketball player, is a top 15 player, maybe higher. He's the third best small forward ever, and can REEEEALLLY push for number 2. The problem is, he would have NEVER gotten that consideration without a ring, that TEAM achievement. He has it now. He got it out of the way. When you realized that OKC lost an MVP caliber player in James Harden, one of the league's better PGs in Reggie Jackson, and Serge Iblockya. And it isn't debate if James Harden would be a superstar... he was already showing flashes, which is why when he started for Houston he immediately average superstar numbers. The Warriors "were great" before Durant because of Bogut and yes, Harrison Barnes and an above average bench. But they were defensive heavy that wore teams down, that in turn allowed Curry and Klay to go off and exploit while other teams were offensively discouraged. Playoffs are a different animal though, you lose a single piece defensively if you're the Warriors and the whole thing can become unraveled, like it did in 2016. There's only so much Steph and Klay can do for 4 quarters. Their effort gets limited without a defensive presence on their side.
But Durant didn't "join a great team". If he joined with Bogut still as a defensive anchor, then yeah, Durant joined "a great team."
What the Durant signing did was just cause a shift in dynamic, they're now offensive heavy. They can lose some defense but still rely on offense to bail them out. So there was a sacrifice of identity to get Durant.
So dumb to see people discuss this as if there wasn't a sacrifice that was made to their identity.

Lebrons team showed up in game 4, they won, and in game 5 everyone was ass again except for lebron and j.r Smith, love was ass and kyrie went 0-6 in the 4th, bron is the 3rd or 2nd best ever, only behind MJ and possibly kareem, but he's still just one Dude.
