Hello Anthony. If an Alpha DRIVE, it needs to be in forward gear first so the shift shaft forks line up parallel with the shift cable. Makes everything in parallel so it can slide apart. BUT FOR THIS DRIVE it is a Bravo so it stays in neutral when removing the outdrive, aka a different design in the Bravo series drives.
