aleluia amen :)
So instead of preaching, you tell us a parable of fishermen, the sea, and healing ;-)
He wasn't a hero to all labradors, trust me
Most of us aren't Canadian, would you like to elaborate? We would appreciate it.
Clever!
I don't know anything about him other than what was in this video. Can you tell me what you mean?
Darndello, he killed his dogs (probably labs) to stay warm, hence not a hero to all Labradors
@@AdamEarl2 So, I fell for a pun? Ok.
I grew up in Africa surrounded by missionaries. In the 60's and 70's there were many highly motivated people who were dedicated to improving the living conditions of the people of Africa. Converting them was part of it, but medical care, sanitation, water supplied, teaching trades was their prime purpose and many dedicated their lives to it, sometimes literally. There were many others with different motivations but there are many people with the dedication of Wilfred Grenfell who didn't have the charisma to get that level of publicity.
There are still a few like that, but for every "front line" missionary, there are 30 support people living in an exotic place where a small salary allows relative luxury. I've been there, I have very mixed feelings about the current situation while having heros from the past.
Know any Newfoundlanders?
@@James-zh6nf I've never met a newfie I didn't like, and I've met plenty. We drove across the island on our honeymoon and have great memories of the trip. I admire Grenfell but he isn't alone in doing good work in God's name.
My Mom was born and raised in Labrador & from my visits to that side of the family it did seem that everything that was named after someone was named after him.
My Dad's Mom told me about when she was a young woman and there were no doctors or dentists (or roads). A medical ship would anchor off of the town twice a year & that was your only chance for dentistry or medical treatment.
I'm a non-religious person, but this is the internet so I'll speak freely of things I don't completely understand.
_This_ is what a Christian really ought to be, and may be the only type of soul deserving of the appellation. I can actually understand why people might convert to a religion when _this guy_ is their reference point for what that faith seems to do to man.
Its hard to fill your own aspirations with nothing more then your own beliefs regardless wheter you are religious or not. But you can't say the religious didn't start him out on this path they did it so well they could'nt keep up with him.
Christianity has always been an ideal as far as I've always understood it.
Not a command or a war...
For anyone asking What Would Jesus Do?, this is definitely the kind of thing Jesus would do.
Replace "Christian" with " fellow human". I think it's clear he did what he did out of empathy, not fear of damnation.
This is a really good comment
This is the best Rare Earth vid I have seen in a while. It genuinely inspired me. In a society in which only the most grusome, awful people and events find headlines, positive stories like this one are something we are all in dire need for.
Your videos are an inspiration. Your videos inspired me to travel across Canada by train and discover this country I call home a bit better. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos, you inspire my teaching, you inspire my interpretation. You rock!
That's a big trip. Enjoy!
Strangely I was reminded of Han Solo saving Luke by slicing open a beast and chucking him inside
Shure, Han probably loved that beast.
*Tauntaun
@@cheshirecynic4524 ?
@@pvopop4938 I was informing Bill that the beast that Luke slept in was called a "Tauntaun," which is a large, ugly, hairy snow lizard, according to Star Wars lore. What's all this about walrus tits? lol

Great work Evan. I’ve really been enjoying these Newfoundland videos. I’m from Newfoundland and have family in both Newfoundland and in Labrador and I appreciate someone telling these oft forgotten stories.
Nailing the sound even in the perpetually windy place you now find yourself in. Not as amazing as skinning dogs to save your own life so you could go on to save others, but worth a thumbs up. 👍
Francesco is a wizard. He's behind the camera but he's half the reason the series is so good
What you're doing is important. Thank-you.
There's nothing wrong with being a little preachy. In fact, I enjoy people who dare declare their stances boldly, like you did in the Albania videos. Don't get me wrong though, these last series has been fantastic as well.
I really enjoy these Newfoundland videos.
I had the rare opportunity in 2010 to visit Battle Harbor off the coast of Labrador and staying in Grenfull’s house there as it was in the early 1900’s. It was an awesome experience and is available to the public. Thanks for the video. Well done.
"Always research what you see on youtube. Don't let anyone think for you; most people can barely think for themselves." Agree.
What does this have to do with this video? Everything in it is easily backed up by a ten-second Google search - he has just delivered it in a moreaccessible, educational format :)
@@onthewater4020 It is in the end credits and works wonders don´t you agree?
I doubt I'd ever have heard about this man except via your video. Thank you for the information.
It was so honest of you to cover whatever he did wrong. Often we get caught up analysing what great people did wrong, when in reality the propensity to make mistakes is high for everybody, just that people like him have a higher impact with all their actions. Great content! GREAT! ❤
These videos never cease to amaze me. By far the best channel on youtube and I eagerly await when your channel explodes and can enrich and educate the millions of people it deserves.
I smell another Tom Hanks movie, but based on this man.
Enough with Hanks
wow! Never heard this story but I Have a good friend that was born and grew up in the area. What a wonderful story Thank you
I remember as a child travelling to NL and hearing this name, but I didn't truly know his story until now.
P.S. It always blows my mind the ratios of upvotes/downvotes on these videos... at the time of this comment, a 99.3% approval rate on this one. Incredible. Great work, keep it up.
I'm in awe-had just barely heard of him before this. Mr Rogers, meet Wilfred Grenfell. You gentlemen have a lot to talk about.
This title broke my mind.
How is it that every single video you post is better than the last one, even though the last one was amazing? Are there no heights to which you won't aspire?
Thank you for an inspiring story and also thank you for making it clear that you were talking about a man, with all of the failings that entails.
Whatever his faults, the fact that he continued to try to help those people in any way he could speaks volumes.
I know there are people like him even in this day and age, I just wish there were more.
Thanks to you, more people know about Dr. Grenfell and that in its own way is a great accomplishment.
Its sad how few movies there are celebrating the courageous doctors of medicine.
It would put to light how many doctors now ignore the hypocratic oath, and prefer money, most good doctors now go to private practice
Where’s the movie on this man
Charlie Taaffe Inside a dog carcus.
I keep forgetting that this series only exists for just a year and a half
Thanks for thos interesting stories I would have never heard without you. Thank you for your work.
"Ooo, sign me up!" ;) In seriousness, great vid about someone who genuinely practiced what they "preached".
On a slightly unrelated note: congratulations to Chris for his star on the walk of fame! Pretty cool!
"Ohh sign me up" omg... I laughed so unexpectedly and hard I almost choked. Lmmfao
Nothing better then waking up hungover every Saturday and seeing your videos in the morning :)
Those were some good boys. R.I.P. Doggos
One of the best videos of this channel!
This is one of my favourite videos so far, because this is the sort of person I can only hope to someday be. Also, cheers to Evan for referencing "Seasons in the Sun" it's a fantastic song.
Thanks Dr. Grenfell
(and thanks wind...)
"It's cold", said every Canadian, ever.
Thank you.
How in the world can these folks crank out videos this good every week?
Its nice to hear stories of good people. I feel like the stories of evil men are told way way to often.
I love this series! Thank you!
Excellent video love the material, and moreso the messaging
I liked it when you were "preachy". I liked hearing your judgement and opinion, what you thought and how you feel because I believe this is partly what this platform is about, sharing not only stories but our views. Travelling so far you must have picked up some profound beliefs, and I'd like to hear them, I'm sure others would too. Needless to say I still love what you do, it's honestly the only reason I still watch videos on TH-cam. It's not often you find this kind of content around here.
Damn you for reducing the mystery of others through your wonderfull stories you two ;-)
Well told, good follower of the word he was...
This is awesome story.
That was harsher than a Three Dog Night.
Service, dedication and more balls than the entire US Marine Corps! I'm also assuming after all Evan said about Dr Grenfell, the statue at the end was life size!
You are an awesome storyteller!!
I Knew you'd cover Labrador, thank you so much I am so desperate for videos of Labrador there are only like 8 of them.
Fun fact: Grenfell's medical tutor at college was Frederick Treves, known for his relationship with Joseph Merrick, 'The Elephant Man' and who has a prominent role in that film of the same name.
The humanity of some humans.
One word needed for this one... "Damn...." ::Thumbs up::
I like your flat tone and delivery
Another awesome show!
I liked the Albania stuff man. Thanks for all of your wonderful vids.
I mean, he didn’t do surgery on a grape or anything, but he still sounds like he did a lot of good.
I thought they smelt bad on the outside
Evan, you should definetly come to Latvia. Our Soviet ''heritage'', still strong in various levels of society, would make some great episodes.
wow, I never would have known.
This is like a really good "project for awesome" video
Great story learned something new keep up the great work
One hell of a story!
*Reads title*
Excuse me wtf
yeah, we know you don't do anything other than reading video titles
Dammit you found Rare Earth
@Ossian Spring Who is this guy?
Can you not let your ego ruin a single channel? The whole "watch for 30 seconds and make a low effort comment" schtick is getting old.
Chris Hadfield will be talked about like this one day
well it certainly seems like your enjoying your stay!
I'm a non-religious person, and Dr. Grenfell has joined my list of heroes. Fred Rogers and the Dalai Lama are on this list too.
Great story!
What a badass jesus
I understand cold. My family and I spent 7 years at Goose Bay-Happy Valley, Labrador...
Thank you. More Canada please :)
I'd like to suggest you do a collaboration with "The History Guy". Your style and content is very similar. Even the tone of your voices is nearly identical. You are my 2 favorite channels.
I like the soundtrack!
“Ooh! Sign me up!”
great vid... but how could you not show Ebeneezer's beard??
There are also thousands of people foregoing health care currently in the USA because nobody can afford health care....even with insurance
I want to see you do Indonesia.... you could be there many years. Love your work, or most of it.
That is pretty cool
I think the moral of this story is that you should not be a sled dog for Dr. Grenfell
"The winters get to -20" "if you haven't lived here you dont know what it feels like to be cold" .... northern alberta gets well into the -30's every winter and last year we reached -50 for a few days but OKAY
Please do some videos on The Great NorthWest; Oregon,Washington,Idaho,BC,Yukon,Alaska.
Was that a... Positive Rare Earth video? That doesn’t make me feel depressed? That’s different.
For anyone looking for the bearded founder: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebenezer_Joseph_Mather
how do you make so many of these
Did he at least apologize to the poor things T T
I'm going to use this story as a counterpoint the next time someone tells me that they're being a jerk because it's the only to get what they want in life.
What is that rectangular appendage hanging from the side of the building behind the statue ???
Have you considered an episode on Stan Rogers?
I wonder if Grenfell towers that burned in London UK were named after him?
I'm never this early
It took me the entire length of the video to figure out the statue is holding a doctor's bag and not a gas can. I was really wondering why they had chosen to depict the man carrying a gas can.
Tbh I liked the videos from Albania more. Still great videos.
You are not preaching. Never think like this. You are acknowledging actual facts about a (historical) person or place or event and evaluate what they tell us about historical, and to a certain regard about our contemporary society. About our understanding of HOW the human condition IS. No one should dare to blame you for sounding like a preacher if a person did bad or good for most of their lives.
Was the disastrous Grenfell Tower housing block in London named after this guy?
Named after the general that beat the Zulu.
He looks like Jack Layton
preaching is good. Examples are good but sometimes preaching is valuable. I think your Albanian content was your best.
The dog flaying.. the the child healing the stealing
The.. dealing the the GOD LOVING LABRADOR
coming in quebec soon?
As long as he has consent......
MORE PREACHY
I liked the albania videos very much, thank you very much
I'm going to assume that the tragic Grenfell tower is named after this man please correct me if I'm wrong
You are wrong. Grenfell Tower was named after a British Field Marshall of the Boer war era.
