I tested Say Intentions for a short VFR flight and I was pleasantly surprised that it recognized my call to center that "I'll be off frequency to pick up the Flagstaff ATIS". It's response was "Roger. Report back on frequency." Or words to that effect. Impressive. I am not too concerned with Beyond ATC's requirement for a more rigid sentence structure, as proper phraseology is supposed to be a thing in aviation, but it's ability to recognize the phraseology involved with unusual circrumstances might be a concern. At this point, the pricing structure has me favoring Beyond ATC, as I simply do not use the ATC functions enough to justify the steep pricing of Say Intentions. I fly for a living, so most of the time when I get into the sim, I just want to fly around unmolested by ATC and enjoy the scenery!! 😂

You guys do know that if you are going to buy Beyond ATC and want premium voices you are going to spend way more than $30 if you fly frequently during that month. Say intentions is unlimited flights. I think BATC has missed the boat, they thought they were the only ones in the game and took there sweet time with the software. They have no traffic on release and no VFR flight following. I have been a subscriber to SayIntentions for past 2 months. It needs work and is in beta but it’s improving each day. I've been hugely enjoying SayIntentions - it takes immersion to the next level, and I've heard other players on the same channels, which is wonderful. At the moment I have to take its instructions with a little pinch of salt however.

    • @berlinflight_tv
      @berlinflight_tv 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

The lack of reliable instructions is the main dealbreaker for me, right now. Mimicking human-like conversations is what current AI Language Models were built for, so it's no surprise that SayIntentions excels at that: It's pretty much a standard feature of any LLM.
However, my main requirement for any ATC simulation would be that it's capable of actually controlling the traffic and giving correct instructions, using proper procedures and phraseology. It's cool, if I can also ask the controller what they had for dinner last night, but first and foremost I want them to be good at their actual job.
From what I've seen of SayIntentions, it's not there yet. I know the developers are very active and highly responsive, and it seems they're dedicated to making this product the best it can be. So, maybe those issues will be a thing of the past soon, but as of now, it simply doesn't look like something I'd want to spend $30/month on. (And yes, I know that the price point is necessary to cover the cost of the AI processing and that the developers said that it's currently not even profitable - doesn't change the fact that the product isn't worth that much to me personally in its current state.)
As for BeyondATC: I haven't yet formed an opinion about it one way or the other. I'm sure there'll be plenty of head-to-head comparisons once BATC gets a public release, and I'm curious about them.

I understand that for simmers who are unfamiliar with standard R/T, SayIntentions would be more ‘comfortable’. However, if you are a real life pilot, you know that you’re not supposed to blabber just anything nor use ‘smalltalk’ or random wording. You are supposed to stay within the ‘rails’.

Hey, just a couple of points, you are correct that BATC is scripted, in the sense that the program is looking for you to say a specific thing. Just like on a real ATC frequency, if you asked the controller what their favorite donut was, they would probably give you a number to call - BATC looks out for key information in a sentence, not a complete sentence. You can throw a lot of umms and urghss and say things out of order and BATC will understand you (I've done this in the beta versions).
With regards to your summery, I think you may be a bit misinformed when you say SI is more realistic and a better comparison to VATSIM, I can't speak for SI however on the BATC side (which I will clarify I am a moderator for), distinguishes between ICAO and FAA rules, we have 23 real life controllers in our discord helping shape the procedures to be as life like as possible. Yes the premium voices in BATC sound great, but this doesn't take away from the experience you get within BATC, it is very akin to flying on VATSIM (the odd banter with a controller aside).
Regardless, BATC is still in development and there is still some work to do before it can be given to the public, I would just suggest you wait until you can get your hands on BATC, like you currently can with SI, so you can make an informed, honest opinion of both products. Both products are trying to do the same thing, but with completely different approaches - that doesn't make one inherently less realistic and I think it's unfair to judge a released early access product with an unreleased early access product personally.

Every single real world pilot is required to talk using a mic.........its simulating ATC, ATC everywhere in every situation, VFR or IFR requires you to press a button and talk. You are criticizing a product for simulating the real world correctly? That's certainly a unique angle.

After trying the SayIntentions demo, I’d say there really is no way to tell it’s using “full AI”, besides that it tends to hallucinate.
You can’t have a conversation with it, and it doesn’t respond particularly well to unusual requests that would be no problem for a controller in the real world.
What it does do is utterly butcher taxi instructions. Or send you on a vector when you go missed approach, and then totally forget about you. Or give you completely conflicting instructions, either conflicting with previous instructions, established procedures or the law, or just common sense. And of course completely and utterly mess up basically all SIDS and STARs (although those are still WIP).
BeyondATC looks like a much more solid product from what we’ve seen so far.

It is 100% "full AI". That claim is not debatable. You CAN have an aviation related conversation We are aware, and fully transparent, about the taxi issues and approaches. This product is still in beta.

@@SayIntentionsAI The quote marks weren’t doubt, they were just there because the term “full ai” is a bit nebulous.
I might try the demo again when it’s available again (and if BATC hasn’t already satisfied my desire for AI ATC), but I couldn’t get ATC (mainly ground and delivery, since those two are easiest to have a “conversation” with in real life) to have a conversation with me about really anything. Asked for PIREPS, the weather at the tower, and other stuff like but and it didn’t really respond properly. I also tried requested different runways (once because it assigned me to land on a runway that didn’t exist), but it just wasn’t having it.
I’m aware IFR is still under development (it had a lot of issues, but I saw the warnings and still tried it so I’m not complaining), but you can fly vectors even VFR. And those seem to be severely broken as I mentioned in my original comment.
Right now, without working taxi instructions and with vectors that just send me out of the controller’s airspace never to be seen again, there isn’t really a reason for me to use SayIntentions. Especially since ATC/FIS communications are already very minimal when flying VFR, it’s just not worth the price right now for me.
That value proposition will be different once the current issues are fixed and IFR is fully supported though, and I’d love to give it another try then!
I do wish you guys the very best developing this though, because even though my experience was far from great, it’s still incredibly cool technology that I’m sure will get better over time.
