Yep. His punchlines usually completely change the perspective of the listener, like the joke about being forbidden from opening the cellar door when he was a child. He works up the courage to open it one day and he is amazed by the wonders he sees on the other side: grass, trees, clouds, THE SKY...
I saw Emo Phillips at Reading Festival a couple days ago!!! He was great. He really hasnt changed since the 80's. Before reading festival i only heard of his name...but now that ive seen live, he's great!!
This was his first appearance on Friday Night Live in 1986 and the first time I saw his act. His 2nd appearance which was a couple of months later is on TH-cam too. I have to admit that my first impression of him was "OMG, WTF is this????" but after listening to him for a minute or so I became a fan. I think that his delivery makes the punchline more unexpected and therefore funnier. There's also some of his material that simply wouldn't work with a more usual delivery. Anyway, you'll make your own minds up as to whether you like his act or not. I personally love it!
The rest of that last joke that was cut is probably the best religion joke in history. If he in his whole career went to the stage and said this single joke, he would be a giant of comedy.
The fact that the British like this guy, means they cannot trash the French for giving a medal to Jerry Lewis. Just dog shit. Thank goodness the UK produced people like Sean Lock and Johnny Vegas (et al) or there would be no way you guys should be allowed to hold your head up.
I like how British audiences applaud after jokes they like!
That's always been his style of delivery. You either love him or hate him. I think he's very witty and I love the delivery

Such a good set. What a legend.
For all of you that think Emo Phillips is terrible, I'm willing to bet it's because none of you can get his jokes.
Made if they had a net they could catch one of his jokes.
I've just spent the evening with Emo in Hollywood. Still trying to get my head round that statement. He's a great guy!
I got to spend some time with him after a set in Louisville, I agree completely.
Simply incredible.
"I was about to get married and my mom suggested I wear my grandfather's tuxedo. So I grabbed a shovel..." - An Emo classic!
Emos been around for years. Good for him.
He's still around...he's touring all the time!
"Just call me mr Butterfingers"

Wow. That's got to be a record length set. I'll bet he has to poo.
The funniest.
This would be from 1986 since he talked about Haley's Comet.

Irs definitely the way he tells em
"Halley's Comet last appeared in the inner Solar System in 1986"
So this must have been in 85 or 86 :-)
OH YEAH I saw him on U.H.F.
Noticed the hole in his shoe, lol.
Good luck ACTORnSCREENWRITER, I'll bet the world is looking forward to your debut soon!! Practice this line "Would you like fries with that"
😆😆😂😂😂👍
Yeah. But I mean on some of the other videos up.
The asthmatic attack joke...🤣
1985/86 hence the Halley's Comet reference.
Hmmm, so the joke used to be $8000 for a cosmetic surgery. Later it became $15k. Damn inflation.
Rotflol XD I
@FakePlasticJames
underrated
@ronaldinhollew thats how he actually talks...and only 1/4 of it I have heard is an exaggerated act...lol.
Where is Emo he was a genius !! :D
Way to cut off his religion joke, at the end. 😅

he isnt as good as he used to be, he looks almost normal
This is from the 80s ...
@Maxpow33r I really don't think he's that funny. He's a bit funny but not the genius people make him out to be.
I don't even know who Dane Cook is!
Overated.
