Into Darkness: Saturnalia, Yule, Modranicht | Origins & Evolution of Christmas

  • The period of time from late December to early January was an important spiritual cosmic event to ancient cultures. Pagan midwinter/ winter solstice festivals directly shaped our Christmas and New Year's holidays. This video traces the history from the earliest origins to modern day, exploring festivals like the Roman Saturnalia, Norse Yule, and Anglo-Saxon Modraniht. We consider the true meaning of the season, discussing the major religious themes and historical events that led us to the contemporary Christmas. These festivals involved both dark and light mythological concepts, as this was the time of both the death and rebirth of the sun god during the winter solstice. This astrological cycle is embodied in legends like the Wild Hunt, and the the Golden Age of Cronus.
    In the second half of the video, we will cover the syncretization of pagan feasts and Christianity, beginning in the medieval period where we see traditions like mumming and the Lord of Misrule, through the early modern period when the Protestant Reformation resulted in a veritable war on Christmas.

    This was really good and full of information. It's also very thought provoking - at least in my opinion anyway. 😄 I am quite curious about the history of all of the other holidays as well. Isn't it curious how they actually banned Christmas for a time?! I'm not sure but, it just seems contradictory somehow... 🤔In any case, it just goes to show that even holidays are subject to the minds and politics of the times. You have such a wonderful channel. I really enjoy all of your videos, with its variety of topics.

      It is curious, though not altogether unexpected from Protestants. I think they were correct in their assessment of Christmas. It’s good evidence that it was indeed pagan.
      Very true. It still is subject to that today. Holidays are important, so it makes sense that they would be targeted by power structures.

    Great presentation and scholarly documentary! Just subbed! We need more channel’s like this-this is the first I’ve seen of your works but I’m looking forwards to watching more of your presentations! I’ve been following Asha Logos for a while and you seem to be on the same wavelength as he is, intent on helping us find our way back to our indigenous niche, etc; exposing the grassroots organic authentic traditions of the European peoples and peeling away the deceptive amalgamations and distortions that were grafted onto them in order to derail their true teachings and mislead or control us by outside invasive groups etc.
    Thomas Sheridan has a few amazing interviews and documentaries about this in regards to Christianity and our Northern and Western Pagan traditions. John Lamb Lash is another who has many interviews and lectures available which also profoundly expose the true nature of our heritage which has been-for the most part-completely destroyed, maliciously and malevolently. His book “Not In His Image” is an absolutely mind-opening read as well.
    More and more of our peoples are piecing our past together and rediscovering, rebuilding our path back home🐉
    God Jól & belated happy Winter Solstice!🍻

    So, at what point in time did this season become the christ mass? Obviously within the Middle Ages, but is there a precise date? I am a Norse Heathen by faith, and I shudder every time I hear a fellow Heathen invoke the name of christ for our Holy Season. Skal

    • @TheHiddenPassage8
      @TheHiddenPassage8  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Much earlier than that, sometime in the 4th century AD. Specific date is kind of irrelevant since it was a gradual process and began in different places at different times. Though it mainly started with Constantine in 325 AD.
      I hear that. Personally, I’m okay with however people want to celebrate and observe. I just don’t like when they bitch about how others do 😆

    • @fool1shmortal

      Which calendar are we going by? Is it the Caesarian one that added two months, the Gregorian one,? Any other kinds? Didn’t the Saturnalia bounce around a December and January over the centuries? Did any other god die and resurrect and ascend on his own-and actually existed? It is more likely the info given those who were approached by God with truth was corrupted as people spread out across the globe far from the Holy Land and those in captivity. These corruptions would have made spreading the Gospel easier, as some things were relatable. It got a little out there in India, but Thomas made a lot of headway there. Any case. God allowed for the corruptions to be useful for later, after Christ opened up salvation for all (the earlier people held in waiting for them if open to that grace by living virtuously). Mankind were still rebellious creatures ontologically sold out to His enemy, so He was under no obligation to free our self-entitled people till good and ready-and we Mass that a very long time. Our bad.

      Pagan or Christian it makes no odds to me.
      Christianity has a lot to answer for in its relationship to the pagan religions it came across.
      But the neo-pagans can't claim the moral high ground by simply making things up, ignoring evidence that doesn't correspond with their views or simply repeating incorrect information without bothering to check the facts.
      And there are a lot of 'The Pagan Roots of.......' videos out there pushing this sort of stuff.

  • @Wotsitorlabart
    @Wotsitorlabart 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The presenter of this video is not being totally honest.
    He quotes Ronald Hutton's 'Stations of the Sun' when it suits his argument but omits Hutton's conclusions when it doesn't.
    For instance the video notes the lengthy quote from 'Syrus' concerning his observations regarding the 25th of December being chosen as Christmas Day (and written in the margins of an earlier document) because that was also the Pagan feast of Sol Invictus. But the video fails to mention that there is no evidence for a feast on that date other than from the passage quoted - and that 'Syrus' (actually Scriptor Syrus) was an unknown Christian Syrian writer of the 12th century (Hutton mistakenly says late 4th century century). And he mentions the moving of Christmas from January 6th to December 25th clearly not realising that the Western and Eastern churches had always celebrated the feast on different dates.
    But what is more damning is that Hutton clearly states that Sol Invictus wasn't celebrated in December at all - let alone on the 25th.
    It took place every four years in October!
    But this would disprove the video's argument regarding the Church's deliberate targeting of Sol Invictus.
    So let's just ignore it and move on.

    • @TheHiddenPassage8
      @TheHiddenPassage8  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I never said it was sol invictus. In any case, you know there was more than one solar observance, so that is somewhat disingenuous and seems like you’re trying to straw man.
      This is not a lit review of Hutton’s work, so I don’t feel obliged to include all his points. Ultimately I am making my own argument, but still I try to be fair and say when evidence is lacking
      Feel free to disagree with it respectfully, and I appreciate the information, but telling people to ignore my video is kind of a dick move.

    • @Wotsitorlabart
      @Wotsitorlabart 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TheHiddenPassage8
      You quoted the 'Syrus' passage because it seemed to back your premise that the 25th was deliberately chosen for Christmas because it was already a pagan festival 'of the birth of the Sun'. This is generally considered to be 'Sol Invictus'.
      But whether it is Sol Invictus or some other such festival your arguement relies on a Syrian scribe's notes in the margins of a manuscript in which he gives his opinion as to why he (erroneously) belived the Roman Church moved Christmas day from 6th January to 25th December over 700 years earlier.
      And if you believe I was suggesting that people should not watch your video then you misread my comment.

    God is Light and in Him is no darkness at all. He created the heaven and earth, the sun, the moon and the stars. He set them in the firmament for signs and for seasons, and for days and years. God is Triune in nature (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). The Lord Jesus Christ is the Second Person of the Trinity, manifest in the flesh. He is the Light of the world and the Savior of the world. It is God who set the sun on its annual circuit. The devil was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. This is why we have stories about gods that appear to predate Christ, but Christ is God and nothing predates God. God's awesome power is clearly seen in His creation. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.
    🫱In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Genesis 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made... He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. John 1:1-3,10 For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. Romans 11:36 In whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist. Colossians 1:14-17 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by Him. 1 Corinthians 8:6 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds; Who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His Person, and upholding all things by the word of His Power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high: Hebrews 1:1-3🫲
