Summary: - Spaced repetition method (aka pomodoro): Study in 20 min intervals with a 5 min break in between. One of the most effective study methods. - Can use flashcards apps like anki that use spaced repetition if its more convenient for you. But use physical flashcards when you can. - Cut flashcards in half. yes. this is really effective. Ive been using this strategy since highshool and for the very first time I got the highest score in our first grading examination. Now that I enrolled again for my second course, I am still using this. You need to have more patience in writing it down on your flashcards. I tell you. its really effective.
I've been using flash cards for 3 years and that's my advice: a card don't have to be definition and term. I often prepare 2 sided questions which are prepared to include answers to the other side. So that I see different questions referring to same topic. Lastly, your video, especially the coloring part is great. I should try coloring perhaps.

🍄 Two tips I have learned- 1- the cards are easier and more natural to ‘flip’ if the card is flipped bottom to top rather than left to right, which is achieved by writing the other side ‘upside down’. 2-Instead of neatly writing all of the words the same, I sometimes try to write things in an unusual way to help me remember better. For example, if I’m writing bed…I might write the letters to look like a BeD-which will hopefully stand out more in my mind.

When I was doing an evening degree course on Modern Chinese I had a one and a half hour journey by coach to the college and being on a coach was not conducive to writing and reading wasn't the easiest thing so I used to drill flashcards of vocabulary. Luckily I have a "visual memory" and so it was very suitable for the following pairs of knowledge: character(s) and sound sound and English meaning character(s) and English meaning Interestingly as there are three elements to Chinese character learning: shape of character, sound associated and English meaning flashcards being binary in nature (two sides of card only) this sometimes caused problems but ... you just have to brute force it sometimes.
I’m going to use this for Spanish. I got an entire large packet of homework for summer that has a bunch of vocab lists so I can be better prepared for the fall.
I am so happy I saw this video. My niece has been having difficulties studying, and I do believe after I show her this video, she will have a pleasant direction going forward. As always, I am a big fan of Socratica and your mission. A pleasure to watch.
I actually studied with flashcards for something then watched this and some of these tips seemed similar to what I did and I remembered what I need to remember better so flashcards are really effective in general and I agree with 99% of these tips
Very helpful video. One of my school teacher once said about this type of cards. So it's an old yet effective method to learn something especially vocabbulary, definitions, terms etc.
I've tried paper cards before, but I kept forgetting them. So I downloaded the app. My favorite "Smart Repetition" for ios and "Memory Card" for Android

Thanks guys, this was helpful. However I feel flashcards are only really helpful for memorization heavy subject. There are not that effective for subjects that require in- depth understanding of the material.
So true! This technique is best for things where you just need fast recall of facts - you don't want to take the time to reason it out, you just want it at the tip of your tongue. So it's great for vocabulary, dates in history, structures of molecules, etc. We suggest students move on to writing essays/arguments & discussion for when you need deeper understanding of a subject. So for most subjects, you'll have to use a variety of techniques in your studying!
I agree with Socratica's reply. Also you can try to solve new problems, different from the ones in your textbook, to see if you really understand the concept. I am thinking about understanding physics, for example. You can't just memorise formulas and rules or laws of physics.
I'm trying to find out how to make FlashCards to learn four languages atthe same time. I think it'd be more useful than make specific FlashCards for each language. Cause I could associate for example a noun of that language to the other three more easier. Of course I'll take it seriously. i'm just trying to figure out what's the better way to do it with FlashCards and with 4. Cause I don't wanna lose time or money. FOUR languages at the same time?! Wow! This is more than we have ever attempted. We do have a little phrase book from the 50s with several languages all together. There's a column for English on the left, and then 5 columns on the right: Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, and Japanese. We picked it up at a used bookstore in Vancouver. It's not so much to study from, but it is very interesting to see the common roots in Spanish, French, and Portuguese. That approach might work - grouping the common languages together, but making separate flashcards for the unrelated languages. Which languages are you studying?
Yes, it's a good idea. I saw that method was called the Ramon Campayo Method but I don't know if I could be able to memorize 3/4 words or phrases in each card. So, the other way would be a word/sentence by card but the problem here is that it will be too many cards. So, or I have many many cards or I try to put 3-4 languages by card. Apart of the Pomodoro technique, I found another one very useful as well: The Leitner system. I'll use both to do it more effective. Right now I speak Spanish, Catalan, French, Portuguese and my English is good. Not perfect but I'm improving it. And I'm learning Italian, German and I started a few days ago with Russian. I also started with japanese but it was too much so I paused it. Italian is really easy to understand so it won't be hard to learn it. German is similar to English cause both comes from germanic language but I have some difficulties with Grammar. And Russian is not so hard as I thought it was. Let's see how it goes with this one. And about Japanese, to be honest I don't know if I'll continue it. We know it's a hard language to learn and I already have enough languages to learn. So, I'm not sure if I'll continue it but I love it. If I finish two of the other languages I'm learning, probably I'll give a change to Japanese. I also want to study some basic Latin, because I love it and also because it could help me with Italian and German. I just want to learn notions, not all Latin. So, except English and Japanese would be three, not four xD but I want to take it seriously, that's why I'm trying to find the easiest way to learn them at the same time. Thanks for your help!

The most effective way to make flash cards is question type, and fill in the blank (writing prompt) type of flash cards.

Idk if you'll see this, but I am going to learn 800 odd mandarin characters for my GCSE exam, how do I deal with a large set like this, as your guide doesn't really say what to do if it takes longer than 20 minutes to sort through the flashcards?
I'm having trouble simplifying the terms for my anatomy class. It seems like everything is important. We have to know the term/name, it's function, characteristics and where it's located in the body. It's very stressful!

Just a comment, I'm learning French, should I write the definition in French or in my mother tongue (Spanish)? Also, How should I check if I really learned the word? I mean, the perfect order of letters and accents, especially in French. Should I write the word or the definition to check? Great video, thanks :)
Such an interesting question! For someone who is truly learning through immersion, everything would be in French. But many people find it would be too hard to write out a complete definition in their new language. So depending on your level, you may need to use Spanish for more complicated definitions. For nouns of concrete objects (table, lamp, shoe), some people will use a picture of the noun. But it gets a lot harder when you make flashcards for other parts of speech or entire sentences.

The Pimsleur Language courses use spaced repetition to effortlessly move new learnings from short term memory over to long term memory. It works!
We've really enjoyed using Pimsleur as well! It's quite expensive, but we've been able to check them out from our library after a bit of a wait.
I still remember things I learned with Pimsleur years ago.

Writing out carefully what to remember, and how to remember it (hints, short cuts, relationships etc) is a bomb way to 'inbrain' quickly.

Flash cards did help me memorize the chemistry equations (organic) that I had difficulty to remember.

This is my first time to see your video. I need help on how to make my own flashcards. I am planning to undergo self review for a licensure examination for teachers because I find enrolling in a review center quite expensive for me. Regarding on making flashcards, do you think it's practical to use matching type or multiple choice questions? If not what would be other good options must I use aside from the usual q&a and terms and definition styles? Thank you.

Idk if you'll see this, but I am going to learn 800 odd mandarin characters for my GCSE exam, how do I deal with a large set like this, as your guide doesn't really say what to do if it takes longer than 20 minutes to sort through the flashcards?

Just a comment, I'm learning French, should I write the definition in French or in my mother tongue (Spanish)? Also, How should I check if I really learned the word? I mean, the perfect order of letters and accents, especially in French. Should I write the word or the definition to check? Great video, thanks :)
Such an interesting question! For someone who is truly learning through immersion, everything would be in French. But many people find it would be too hard to write out a complete definition in their new language. So depending on your level, you may need to use Spanish for more complicated definitions. For nouns of concrete objects (table, lamp, shoe), some people will use a picture of the noun. But it gets a lot harder when you make flashcards for other parts of speech or entire sentences.
