    This is exactly what I was looking for to help my 6th grader learn WHAT notes to take. There are a million videos on the Cornell Method which I could care less about. Methods are secondary to learning what information to write down. What is great about this video is it shows a "lecture" and how a person should take notes. I've been watching videos for HOURS and this is the only one I came across that gave lecture examples. Do you have any more or possibly some where the examples aren't as high level (something a middle schooler could relate to)?

    • @Socratica

      +Tracie Parks That's wonderful to hear! We have a series of science videos that are middle school level. Tomorrow we'll pick one and write notes in this style and post a link here for you. Thank you so much for sharing these skills with your middle schooler. It will make such a big difference!!

      I let my kids choose their favorite topics to practice the skills so they would not associate not taking with tasks they dreaded. My daughter practiced with fashion (she wanted to learn what was involved with opening a boutique) and my son was into a card game (he focused on strategies used in Magic: The Gathering). I guided the practice, and since it wasn't for "school", they were not as unplugged and defensive. It was moderately successful. I'll take what I can get.

      I do appreciate how you have me going from one Google search to another. I even found some Feynman lectures on TH-cam. Not that I understand a word he says, but I do adore The Big Bang Theory (and learn a lot from that show) I am able to listen for a bit before my head feels like it's going to explode :')
      It was not 100% clear to me, so I Googled "Ques" in note-taking, and came to learn that it means "recall" notes. I use word association, so this makes perfect sense to me.
      Recall and Process Questions
      . Questions can also be categorised by whether they are 'recall' - requiring something to be remembered or recalled, or 'process' - requiring some deeper thought and/or analysis. A simple recall question could be, 'What is your mother's maiden name? '.

      What is also interesting, is that I have both my ENGL 095 binder, and my ENGL-080-95 notebooks in front of me right now. Socratica has always been from Miss Kathy's READ080-95 class, but I am now transferring the Cornell method of taking notes over to my notes for my ENGL095 class. These two classes seem to be working together, and it's been wonderful. It's like ( like being uses as a simile. I got that one from Young Sheldon) having two teachers for one class helping me "catch" up on what I missed out on 40 years ago. They both have been just wonderful.

    This would also work for reading a text book, especially a book from the library that I can't highlight. Plus a section for my own ideas and connections to things previously learned because few things trigger own ideas like reading.

    • @Socratica
      @Socratica  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MxDae It's an interesting question! It probably depends on how much of the chapter you are assigned at a time. That way, you take a section of notes as you do your reading assignment. Just continue from there when you are assigned to read more. Good luck!!

    Please answer me. I appreciate how you make taking lecture notes so much easier but I have a question. How can I take notes from the textbook using this same Cornell Method when there's no one lecturing behind? Should I get a text to speech converter to work the same or jus read a chunk by myself and then take notes? Will I be able to pinpoint what to put in my notes when I take notes from a textbook where no one else is giving a lecture just like in the video?

    In my favorite class, history, no need to take notes, word by word is safe in my memory, but in class like physics, no need to take notes either cuz nothing Wil be safe in my memory and nothing will make me recall the lecture...why?...I will practice this note taking method

    • @donator6
      @donator6 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, with a subject like history you can imagine a picture with specific information. for example if I say '100 years war' you will picture a battlefield with medieval Knights in gothic armor (hence you have a idea of the time period, 14th century). while with physics, I guess it is more numbers, and mathematical information hence it is harder to remember because it is hard to link a picture. the human brain is incredebly weak in remembering 'raw' information. But the brain is amazing at remembering when it can associate it with something. So try to link information by imagining a picture with it. it will help you a lot with your subjects ;).

    One should NOT be bothered by 'taking notes' during a lecture, which is a waste of time anyway - just sitting there. All you need, should you be forced to rely on lectures (so lecturers can get paid, and the academic system continue to be supported as usual), is a recording of the lecture you can play and pause as you like, and above all, adjust speed to your liking. Just the wrong - usually too slow - tempo can be very irritating and make you wish you'd have a book / text instead. I understand academia is in a crisis as far as lectures are concerned, but they are quickly going obsolete.

    • @dhampson545
      @dhampson545 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Academia IS changing, but I wouldn't say obsolete. I do lecture, but I try to make is a much of a "dialog" as possible, even if I am the only one who knows the landscape. We do a lot of in-class work as well, to make sure students are actually leaving with an understanding. There are also many tools that allow a very fast "quiz" in the middle, to make sure that everyone actually does understand. This allows an instructor to change their pace to best match the students.
      Any lecturer who believes that students will learn everything from listening to a lecture is deceiving themself. If it was true, we'd all have PhD's by age 8.
      The act of interpreting, condensing, and writing your thoughts greatly reinforces the learning. Of course, some students /can/ learn from a youtube video, but not the ones who need this particular video.

      Asking the professor for the visuals ahead of time, so you can add your own notes, is a great compromise. That's what we did when we taught - handed out copies of powerpoint slides, with lots of room to make additional notes. That way you can spend most of your time listening, and make notes of just the key information. However, it's important to remember that the slides on their own are not the whole lecture - just the visual aids for the lecture.
      It sounds like you are handling it just right - following up on the notes at home.
      I would still practice taking notes in class, but make it a game. For each section, try to decide what is the one phrase that is absolutely essential, and only write that down. That way you are spending more time digesting the information, and less time just copying everything.
      Good luck!! It sounds like you are a very serious student. We're sure you are going to do well!

    Very nice, but when I understand the Subject and there are no critical historic info I did not make any notes. The point is that if it is coherent and you understand it, you probably never will forget. When not taking notes you may better understand. It only works for math.

    I'm not asserting that re-reading and summarizing can't be beneficial. But there are studies that suggest that those methods are considered low utility. High utility methods include practice tests, spatial, and active recall.

    Personally I find taking notes during a lecture is distracting. It's for me, better, to first listen carefully and afterwards make notes with research. Listening well to music can train our mind to listen carefully and attentively to lectures. The ancients knew how.

    Hi Socratica, thanks for the video, but I have some questions to ask.
    Q1: I don't really get it when someone say "key point". So, at 1:10, when you said to write just the "Key points", does it mean to write "what we think are important information/point" in a paragraph of an important section in a chapter?
    Q2: Can I also take notes in outline method format in the note-taking section of the Cornell Notes?
    Q3: Every time we take notes in the note-taking section of the Cornell notes, are we supposed to take notes in our own words?
    Q4: In some Cornell Note tutorials that I have seen, they tell us to take note of major points of a lecture in the CUE column first then, take note of information that support each major point on the left side in the note-taking section. However, in most of the Cornell Notes tutorials, including your video, they tell is to take notes in the note-taking section first and then write some main ideas in the CUE column. Which style is correct? Cue first or Note-taking section first?
    Q5: When you summarize at the bottom, were you summarizing the information from the note-taking section or from both cue and note-taking columns?
    Q6: In this video, you taught us to take notes during a lecture. How to take notes with Cornell Notes when reading a textbook?
    I hope you will help me clarify. Thank you!

    i don't think this is practical for very technical lectures. you would have to know which parts to summarize and keep up with the lecture. all while hearing it for the first time. to be honest, i think everyone needs to start recording their lectures

    I get overwhelmed while in class, when the teacher goes too fast, barely can hear them speak. Ask them slow the heck down or speak up, most of the tome they don't do so.
    Stares at professor bobbing head like I'm agreeing to them. All while my iPhone or iPod is recording and videoing the board. Not writing a thing on paper, wait to go home to listen recording and take notes etc with help from the internet

    Excellent video. One question -- in Walter Pauk's original presentation of Cornell notes, he uses the "Cues" column (almost exclusively) for writing questions, in order to clarify meanings, reveal relationships,
    establish continuity, strengthen memory, etc. I was surprised you don't suggest this at all, reserving (in the demo) this column for key words, topics, etc. Is there any particular reason you don't suggest putting any questions into the "Cues" section? Thanks again for a great resource...

    I do not pay any attention what professors are saying cause I cannot write and understand what professors are throwing at me. To be honest, some professori are very fast, especially the one who teaches graduates as well. I write my note in my iPad word for word. I don't care at that time if I don not understand. I just record their audio. Then I comeback to my house and use one hour to go through the audio as well as my notes. This method works if your are hosed down by informations.

    • @Socratica
      @Socratica  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi!! Here at Socratica, we use a few different kinds of notebooks, depending on what we're doing. For note taking in class, we use the standard 8 1/2 x 11 loose leaf paper, kept in a 3-ring binder. That way we can add additional pages or take some out, as needed. But you might find a spiral notebook works for you! We like the big size so we can see a lot at once - and then usually just a few pages is enough to cover a class topic. Good luck!!
