Victor Wembanyama Can Be The FIRST ROOKIE To ACHIEVE This

  • Victor Wembanyama is making a serious case for himself this season and it’s scary, but in a good way. At this point, he is probably going to win the Rookie of the Year at the end of the season, but there’s one thing that is also up for grabs and he could break history if he’s the first ever rookie to win this award. The NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award. No rookie has ever come close to winning this no matter how good they are defensively, but could Wemby be the first to pull this off or are there other factors that will prevent him from doing so?

The DPOY selection is the one award that I find the most inscrutable and intransparent. It is not based on stats or outcome, just on a very subjective impression that a player is a good defender. Pippen never got it, which shows how patently absurd the criteria were. Mutombo got them on blocks alone while being useless outside the paint. Same with Alonzo. Never played in teams that won anything while in their prime. So what is? Steals? Blocks? Defensive efficiency measured with advanced stats? The eye test tells you that Wemby is the most impactful defender right now. As shotblocker, help defender and even on the perimeter. But his team is nevertheless terrible.

@@thatboylije7892Duncan never winning a DPOY really show how useless these accolades can be to judge a player’s level, Lebron also never won it and he was basically a bigger more athletic Draymond or Pippen, especially in Miami he was robbed in 2013 when Gasol won it, but in 2013 the ability to switch and guard 1-5 at an elite level wasn’t as valuable as todays, in todays game prime Lebron would easily win DPOY, he is like a bigger more athletic Marcus Smarter or Jrue … And what about AD ? Easily the best defender of the last 10 years imo it’s close with Draymond, Kawhi and Gobert but i think AD is more dominant than them … And then you have Giannis, a great but overated defender.
So yeah, don’t judge a player only with his accolades, you have to add context and look at the analytics stats.

    Very nice explanations.
Being french (and living in France) I've followed his career in the Mets92 team and I had no doubt after half of the season that I was witnessing a player like no other, playing in a team destined before he came to play with them for PRO B (yes you go down to a lower league in France). Wenbenyama didn't only make an impact on the teams performance but made his teamates better players. They ended up just losing the french LNB Pro A final to Monaco who are one of the best teams in Europe only losing the last three games in the last minute.
For those who think they've seen almost everything he has to offer then think again. His career is just starting and with only just one player ready to give him the ball at the right time (Hi Stockton 😊) then as Charles Barkley said a couple of weeks ago "it wouldn't be fair"...
And it won't be fair. If the Spurs invest in just a couple of quality players then there's no contest.

As much as i'd like to see him win it as a fellow French guy, I think that your point on communication is a valid argument for him not to : dpoy candidates should be able to improve their team defense by not only being their best defenders, but communicating on and off the court to elevate their roommate's play on this end, much like a draymond green : great individually and a vocal leader guiding his team to being one of the best defensive team in the league... but you could argue that wemby could win it even without this, that's how good he is :')

You dont know NBA basketball... its a BUSINESS... they are losing on purpose to get a pick in the next draft to build around him. Just like they did with Duncan, then Manu, then Tony, then they won 5 rings.... Spurs play MARATHON BASKETBALL... Not the 100-meter dash to TRY to win a ring every year. They build slowly for MULTIPLE RINGS. Tony was 19 years old, Manu was a 2nd round pic... Sochan and Vasell are good, and Keldon Johnson already played with Team USA and got praise from all Super Stars when he did. They actually have a VERY GOOD team and YOUNG which are all good ingredients to win MULTIPLE CHAMPIONSHIPS or atleast multiple playoff runs. They're need another athletic big man and a TRUE POINT GAURD. But as a die hard Spurs fans, we dont want that. Spurs take pride in being the underdog and winning with hard work and fundamentals and building and NOT JUST PAY A SUPER STAR BILLIONS TO TAKE 100 SHOTS A GAME.. like LUKA and Lebron.. What's the point in making the playoffs just lose the first round every year? Thats why the spurs lost for the last 7 years to get where they are now. And NOW THE WHOLD WORLD WANTS A CHAMPIONSHIP NOW!!!! LOL Sorry, but it dont work like that in San Antonio, and it's comments like yours that make it fun to scope all the new BANDWAGON FANS. Because this means he is a revolution to the game, and such revolution should be rewarded.
