    what no one is pointing out is that the New York Rangers had 0 1st round picks from 2013-2016. they will now have 5 1st round picks in total in the 2017 and 2018 drafts. they restocked those cupboards quick

      Alex Higgins That's assuming they draft the right players. Doesn't matter how many picks you get if you can't do it right, COUGH Edmonton.

    Missed opportunity @50:00 to tell a great Harold Ballard anecdote re Programs and jersey names. In the mid-70s the NHL passed a rule requiring names on all jerseys. Being a notorious penny-pincher and asshole, Ballard refused, as it would cut into program sales. Under threat of a fine from the NHL, Ballard eventually complied by putting the names in blue lettering on the team's blue jerseys and in white lettering on their white jerseys. He was fined and forced to change it.

    Ottawa got Colin White, Logan brown, Drake Batherson, Alex Formenton and somewhat Thomas Chabot who is still a rookie this year! I mean the team is not naked. Ottawa has better prospect than Montreal. Mtl only have Nikita Scherbak and Victor Mete and Noah Juulsen.

      and who knows who else will step up for them. I mean lets look at the Bruins. Who expected Heinen, Kuraly and Riley Nash to play as well as they have? And maybe, just maybe, playing with some young kid revives Bobby Ryan's career. I'm 100% sure his talent is still there. He won't live up to his contract but he can still put up 50-60 points per season

    I've not been loving Vegas since about November, and most people hate them too. I feel everyone would be all on board with them if they were on the bubble, fighting game by game to stay alive. Game 82, they win in dramatic fashion to clinch the final wild card spot, then pull a Nashville and actually win the cup as the 16 seed. That's a movie right there

    • @jediknightfalcon
      @jediknightfalcon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Henry I think the movie would be not about hockey and more about the gm and managment. Then in the last 15 mins they show montage of the team winning a bunch nd maybe go in depth for like the final game of the cup final.

    Steve can you talk about this at some point. How the rules for expansion are possibly too loose causing teams to have to give up to much. i thought this from the start. I think team should be able to protect more. Seattle is coming in a hot minute to rifle through our teams again and its not super pleasant.

    as far as jersey and kovalchuk, the rights to him ended last summer, no other team would have traded for his rights because of the chance he could go back to the KHL (which he did)

  • @MrGnarVar
    @MrGnarVar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    with regards to the Kovi deal last summer, he wanted to stay in NY so he was going to a divisional rival. You have to get somthing of value for Kovi if you are going to make a dicisional rival better, otherwise its better for him to not be in the league for a year

  • @warcow
    @warcow 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding the names on jerseys, did you know when the NHL made it mandatory fucking Harold Ballard used the same colour for the names as the fabric of the uniforms, so people couldn't ID the players in an attempt to still make money on programs.

  • @jordanroy9352
    @jordanroy9352 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with Steve 100%! However you can even take it a step further... Last year the Caps added Shattenkirk which "should have" pushed them over the top and made them "better". The problem is you can't buy chemistry! you can't add a guy and say he fits right away when the season is already 80% over and said player hasn't had 60 games to practice with the core and know what other players prefer and respond better to in on ice scenarios. Tampa added McDonagh.. NO DOUBT he is a GREAT Defenceman and no doubt he is an improvement to their D-core but if you look at the standings, what they had already was working prior. Now that he is, not just added but considered and will probably be used as a main piece with limited time left before the playoffs start, logically it is a risky move to make such a drastic change and push someone else out who obviously isn't bad at all and think that McDonagh will push them over the edge all the way to the cup.. having said this I may eat this paragraph and coke on it in a few months from now but I'm just saying Shattenkirk was suppose to put the caps over the top yet the Leafs gave them a run for their money and Pittsburgh ate them alive. The McDonagh addition is potentially same crap, different pile.

    question for the next SDP should the leafs have a 4vs5 pk units of
    leo kadri hyman hansey
    brown plekanics kappy i zaitsev?
    while having 3 forwards while down a man is not the norm pks i feel this would help the 2 defencemen play less on the pk in terms of time on ice and all of those forwards are on the pk already anyways and if kadri wants to win a selke then he has to play pk he already plays the top opposition on 5vs5 anyways. if not kadri maybe moore takes his place?

    The problem with the Kovy trade thing abck in the summer was that he wanted to be traded to the rangers and the rangers are clearly a rival. Devils didnt wanna give up something like that to a cross river rival like the rangers especially because even tho I think Kovalchuks days are numbered hes still gonna be a decent player. Didnt understand it either trying to sell high was all but hey if the rangers want another Rick Nash for a couple years this is their new Rick Nash

    I would say the leafs won on the buy side. Hear me out. The leafs got stronger, they got a guy who provided he picks up the system here quickly can shut teams down and they didn't trade away the future to do it. I would have liked to see them pick up a low level defenceman but they are improving defensively through coaching so it's more of a depth thing then the OMG fits of WTF i have been screaming for so long.
    We have a legit shot at making some serious noise in the playoffs and if they make it through Boston and Tampa it's not a WTF it's a wow, they did it. That's a win to me. Tampa has no idea where they will be in 2 years so I get why they did what they did but who knows who they lost in those picks and they didn't trade away fluf players either.

    Steve. Coburn and Sustr have been on the ice for over 50% of the goals allowed. In the first 10 games that we lost, Sustr was on the ice for 70% of the goals. He even got benched for weeks and even started a game, single handily get tampa scored on 3 times in the first period. And was benched for the whole game. Sustr is terrible, and coburn is bad. Ask anyone who watches tampa. Giardi has been great in tampa. Vlad has been very inconsistant with any other linemates, and stammer and kuch got dry for weeks. Kunitz has been amazing for depth scoring to fill that void and even re energize the line without Vlad.

    I find it funny how people say Leafs, Tampa and I guess the penguins like Pittsburgh is better then the leafs by far... Not to mention the leafs are only doing good cause Andersen is playing well. The leafs are 4th in most shots against. Your S/GP are the same as last year but SA/GP have gone up by 2. Stats are almost identical to last season. The only difference is that you score more and allow less goals during the regular season. It all changes during the playoffs. Good teams don't need 34 shots to do damage, you give them that many shots you'll get buried

    • @andrewhumphrey990
      @andrewhumphrey990 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      OneTimer i recall last year in the playoff we didnt get buried. Ps good teams need good goalies you should know that 2 cups in a row with 2 starting goalies fuck lol

    • @andrewhumphrey990

      Also scoring more and allowing less goals is literally the sport...

    • @SLproductions1000
      @SLproductions1000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You missed my point sorta. So you confirmed what I'm saying in a way. You need 2 goalies which the leafs don't have. 1st round exit last season. I'm predicting another 1st round exit. My point was that Steve is considering the leafs contenders but they have similar stats to last year and they got beat in the 1st. He's saying the pens aren't contenders for what ever reason but our team is lowkey better then last year. Maybe we don't have Fleury but Jarry is pretty good too. That's the only big loss that we suffered.

    • @andrewhumphrey990
      @andrewhumphrey990 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      OneTimer the leafs had 9 rookies last year and still gave the presidents trophy winner a run for their money. Steve did not say that at all lol he actually said you cant beat them do yourself a favour and put those stanely cup rings back in your ears you have no reason to be this butt hurt

    • @dawnsweetmarie
      @dawnsweetmarie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      akumasdeception I agree with this but why say it originally sounding like Toronto forgot to improve?
      They stayed in compliance with the "specifications of the Blueprint."
      since three years ago, when Shanny got good people in place, they haven't veered off that plan once.
      This was no exception.
      Our build is forever... not one year.

  • @dawnsweetmarie
    @dawnsweetmarie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The Leafs did what they planned.... nothing unless there is a need.
    It's sad that our fans believe a deal is good by names and old reputations....
    It's not the Shanaplan way... it's not the Blueprint plan and,...
    honestly anyone who thinks other teams like TB and Boston got stronger, is unable to understand any real understanding of ther game of hockey.
    Lou said it, they made a splash. But now they have a guy whose way overrated. McDonough played on a crap team and lately has dominated no-one.
    Please....
    oh hell...
    Leafs fans have such PTSD, they cannot think straight.
    Today we compare as more dominant against the likely playoff opponents....
    Not because of what at did at ther last minute.
    Pittsburgh got better....
    TB and Bostin committed suicide.
    I'm thrilled.

    • @dawnsweetmarie
      @dawnsweetmarie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      FlexEnvy It's the lack of depth at forward, now critical, that makes this so foolish.
      Namesnitkov has an amazing skill set and they tossed it away... when they need to be deeper away forward because the minutes alone cannot be sustained. Stamkos was exhausted last night and now...
      Kucherov goes down and...
      They have some fierce defenders, but I'm underwhelmed with the character of the Ranger captain. he's a nice guy, but he's also going to be reinstated with a guy who he has stayed dislike and disrespect in Girardi!
      Chemistry is the way to the trust (which enables speed and thus a faster, more dangerous offense, like the Leafs' have. They have the most efficient possession hockey now being played and being sustained.
      A star going down hurt hasn't rattled us because of depth and our high level of skill.
      I am not waiting for the Cup this year but when we win?
      We will see more winning in the future, and teams like Tampa Bay will be in the cellar forever.
      It's Shanahan 101...
      Rebuild tonight and you don't ever have to do it again.
      I want sure he could deliver his stated Blueprint but....
      I've not been wrong in one move or one result for three years because I studied this plan.
      Success isn't random players as being in the right place and getting lucky...
      I'm living in Detroit for forty years and I thought Yzerman knew this but...
      Obviously not because there's nothing worth letting Namestnikov get away with the rest of your future...
      Dumb.
      And our Shanny.... Fearless Leader.... he knows how dumb these other ex players are.

    • @dawnsweetmarie
      @dawnsweetmarie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ethan Taylor Had they gotten him and not given up Namestnikov?
      This would at least not change things much and show up defense.
      But again, Girardi was no small part of McDonagh's letter to management asking for a trade...
      It's perplexing how they didn't try and get someone who want coming in feeling "chemical disgust" with his new defense partner.
      Gonna be interesting cuz here in Detroit they also consider Yzerman's GMing non-stop genius....
      but after last year and Stamkos injury costing the Bolts a great chance?
      They're in the same boat with their most promising young forward now playing for another team.
      No excuse for this Stevie...
      We were googling last night that our btw piece is not only cleanly shaved but wearing 19... Mr. Yzerman's former number.
      That game pay night was won by the goalie...
      That's no way to win. Another cult of personality that defies understanding that one injury... one... can cost you the season and the future?
      Inevitable rebuilding.... years odd struggle because of short term ignorance...
      Never again, wet say in Toronto as Auston goes down and we're still totally fierce...
      But hey... great player can't make a mistake...
      It's why Shanny is going to make all these superstars look inept.
      He actually studied hockey, dynasties and greatness...
      And its a beautiful thing...
      okay... a little emotional now....lol

      I'm not saying Tampa bay is a bad team or a bum by any means, quite the opposite. Maybe it was the Mcdonagh trade for the lack of bodies, dressing 7 defenseman but the fact that it was in Tampa too makes no sense. You lose Kucherov, ok, you don't have Namestnikov anymore cause of trade, Johnson got hurt but eventually returned yet Stamkos ends up playing nearly 27 minutes. The leafs don't have Matthews last night and for at least a couple weeks depending, we shuffled the lines around, others got a bigger role. Not having your best player sucks but it didn't stop us from still playing and possibly winning that game.
      Stamkos hasn't really been a factor in any of the games so far. I'm a leafs fan so obviously I'm going to be backing my team. And when it comes to my team, I happen to be an optimist. Both Tampa and Boston make a good case but why not the leafs? Tampa Bay has some stars and a scary goalie, Boston has one deadly line, Rask but we have stars, depth and a excellent goalie in his own right. Boston and Tampa have some seasoned depth pieces, so does Toronto. Any one of these potential series will come down to which goalie makes one more save than the other. And best team doesn't always win. The leafs either way will be the underdog to most but they were against Washington, caps in 4, caps in 3-yet Toronto took them to an even 6 games, in goals, shots, as even as you can get. And different players but who's to say the Mcdonagh trade won't be like Shattenkirk to the caps last year.

      J.T. Miller is a very good and underrated player. Second on the Rangers in points just behind Zuccarello. I love the Tampa trade for both teams. However, yes, as a Bruins fan I hate the Nash trade. The Bruins have plenty of prospects but no A prospects. I’d say they’re all B/B- propsects so the first round pick we gave up was horrible. I don’t think Toronto even needed to make the Plekanec trade but I do believe it makes them better, I don’t mind that trade for the Leafs
