Messier demanded #11. #11 was unofficially retired by the Canucks to honor Wayne Maki (An Original Canuck), who had died in 1974 due to brain cancer. Just one of many reasons why us Canucks fan hate Messier.

I think the biggest things that explain the hatred is the tear down of the core (including Linden) by Mike Keenan acting GM+Coach after a shitty start to the 94-95 season.

It wouldn’t be so bad if the league didn’t constantly remind us all that this guy is one of the all time great “leaders” of the game… when his actions/play during his tenure in VAN showed the opposite. That’s why it’s so annoying. I don’t deny he was a great leader on other teams, but he wasn’t on the Canucks and that’s just a fact.

57:36 Why I dislike Messier as a sympathetic non-Canucks fan is because he took #11 which was unofficial retired because it had been worn by Wayne Maki who died of brain cancer.
Come on guys I'm not even Canadian and I know this.

11:16 Already noted, but Mathieu Olivier is the Fourth Line RIGHT Winger, and he was asked about it on a French-language radio station and said that he was never asked for pictures, and that the meeting with Babs went well. What a terrible take saying that Biz wouldn't be motivated to generate clicks by sensationalizing this story. I've never known media outlets, newspapers, or anything like that regardless of size that didn't post shocking headlines or stories to generate buzz for their outlet. Talk about blind, of course Bizz would be motivated to get people talking about his podcast and get people to watch their show. As a young boy, my mother took me to a Leafs-Sabres game at the War Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo. I recognized King Clancy at a concession stand, struggling in anonymity to balance a coffee on the edge of a counter, while he wrestled with a hotdog wrapper & a packet of ketchup. I innocently walked up in my peewee hockey jacket & asked for an autograph. He angrily looked up & snapped “Do you know who I am?” And I timidly replied “King Clancy?” He paused for a moment & then smiled at me. He forgot all about the coffee & hotdog to sign my program & ask about what team I played for & what position I played. I’ve never forgotten this encounter.

The thing with Jarmo is, he's an excellent drafter and a shrewd trader (has both hits and misses but overall pretty solid). His two weaknesses as a GM has been in picking a coach and re-signing players. The latter is partially due to some players just wanting to go to bigger markets, which isn't Jarmo's fault really. But it's also due to the fact that he seems to always want to pick hard-nosed coaches that employ a 90's style of play. Not that there's anything wrong with trying to emphasize hard work and professionalism, but there does seem to be a consistent theme of the Jackets always having a mediocre unimaginative offense that relies completely on a stiffling defense and solid goaltending. Changing that constant repetition may require wholescale office changes for the organization.

I will say, after I started my job at a very large corporation, I was encouraged to create one PowerPoint slide to introduce myself during the monthly all-hands (along with all the other new hires from the previous month). Most people included family pictures, hobbies, previous jobs, and fun facts. My understanding is these sorts of “introduce yourself to the team” things are pretty common across corporate America. *If* it was done like that, I don’t really see what Babcock did as strange or out of line necessarily.

I had a co-op at Stare Farm years ago and the manager had just read The Secret and to encourage embracing change she had everyone in the office paint their nails a different colour every day for a month, including sending pictures of our new paint colour on weekends. I was the only guy in the office which somehow meant I got to paint my toes instead of my fingernails. So I spent a month barefoot at the office and sending foot pics to my boss. I am not a fan of Babcock at all, but in a comparison from the average persons experience how often would you expect to run into your coworkers family? How much different is that for highly paid athletes where they have specific sections or boxes for family to use or specific Fathers/Mothers trips with the team? I can see the perspective of trying to get to know your players family for the occasions where they would be in the building/hallway vs the average joe who may only have that happen once a year at a "company" picnic or something.

Success and money doesn't mean you stop wanting it, it's quite the opposite. Now, Babcock has been a horrible coach to several players but that doesn't mean you can smear his reputation further by possibly misrepresentating what actually happened. I think the boys mistepped in not acknowledging their own bias.
Especially Adam and Steve, normally they seem to at least have read most of the relevant information, but in this case with Babcock they clearly haven't.
All summer there have been intrrvirws and reports with Babcock about his mentality change and his decision to focus more on mental health of his players.
Now, whether or not he is going to be any good at implementing that is another matter, but he has still made an effort to change, and there is public record of his acknowledgement to do so.
People can try to change and be unsuccessful, but assuming someone tries, you need to give them a chance

Maybe you guys should do an ounce of research when wondering why Messier is hated as a captain in Vancouver...
Imagine if Marchand (can't really think of an equivalent) became a Leaf and the following happened:
    1. Takes Salming or someone who has an emotional connection related to them's jersey # (without consulting the family).
    2. Refuses to live in the GTA (condo and commute billed to the team).
    3. Gets Shanny to fire Treliving and Keefe and replaces them with Chiarelli and Julien.
    4. Takes the captaincy from Tavares and then gets him traded. (Linden was held at a higher regard but whatever).
    5. The team becomes absolute trash right away and you lose other important players.
    6. Leaves the team in shambles three years later.
That is probably the darkest time in Canucks history and that includes the 80s!

I know blowing stories out of proportion is bloggers' / podcasters' job, but the Babcock story is literally nothing being made into something (admittedly about a coach with a track record that makes him an easy target).
The guy shows pictures of his family, asks players and other co-workers to talk about their families (and voluntarily show pictures of their families). That's it.
Biz wants to drum up controversy, but this is not a case of Babcock invading people's privacy and forcing them to show the pictures on their phones. It's about voluntarily showing pictures of their families. Good lord, obviously not much hockey news these days.
