I had to chuckle when I saw those 4 and 6 OB engines on a boat. It reminded me of Indonesia where taxi boats look similar and some tourists really struggle when they have to climb over the transom. Most boats in around the 300hp range seem to top out or cruise at 25knots / 29mph /46km/h and the required power to overcome friction in a fluid increases to the power of three when you double the speed. Double the speed (i.e. 50knots) would require eight times the power (i.e. 2400hp or 6 engines of 400hp). Obviously it's more complicated than that and the hull plays a big role here as well. While I understand the feeling behind the old adage, "There is no replacement for displacement," I've lately been fascinated by the fact that toroidal propellers were invented. Doesn't the little German engineer in you just rejoice at the sheer efficiency of that design? But two counter-rotating toroidal propellers must be the epitome of quiet and smooth operation... Since noise and vibration is energy that isn't converted into thrust, the thought of it just delights that little German engineer in me. 😜 What do you think about those new propellers? I know it's not quite as simple as buying a generic one.
Everyone’s losing their minds over these new Merc ob’s, but forgetting about 7 marine’s 627hp outboard which was released over 10 years ago. Basically a marine Corvette C6 ZR1 (supercharged) engine. Shame they discontinued it, but my point is that 500+ hp outboard are nothing new…
It’s not only about power, it’s about power to weight ratio. Why do you think these will push some boats into the 140MPH range with twins. Youve never heard of any boats with 627s going that fast. If you put twin 627s that’s around 2,200 pounds vs twin 500s which weigh around 1,400 pounds. We all know when it comes to high speeds, weight is essential.
Those GM based engines were completely different from what's being produced here. This is an engine that was born for the water, in its architecture and all.
Volvo Penta bought 7 Marine and then stopped production shortly after the purchase. If you ask me, Volvo Penta bought them out in order to kill the company.
Seven were also garbage. weighed a ton, massive in size (can fit more Mercs on a transom), cost a fortune to buy and own, had no service network at all, were awful on fuel. Should I keep going?

Hey, brother I watched the release video of the MERCURY 500R All big dollar clientel most of them already had the 450R. if I had a dream boat choice It would be the MTI 34 or the fountain thundercat.
The "regular" version of the 600 V-12 is going for $110K, so this pricing (although high) is not out of line, especially when you consider the performance.
"A company is planning to put a single 500R on a catamaran" Yeah that makes sense. BTW Seven marine's 627 has issue with this video since you said most powerful outboard ever.
I don't know if I can get away with twins on a 32 everglades but the f350c Yamahas are kinda a nightmare and id like to get more top-end out of the boat
@@gregsmith8032just tore down a saltwater f90, 390 hours, the lower w/p housing had a crater rotted in-between the two sides, it actually pushed up and bent stainless wear plate. I thought they were doing better with their metallurgy.
I would put them on a technohull rib, 3 of them can get you to 110 knots which is impressive! Now why rib? Here in Greece the weather is unpredictable!
My Fish and ski (Viper Cobra hull) is rated for unlimited horsepower....I need a 500 to replace my 200 smoker...it's only about 75 lbs more than my current motor.
Good for both, but the torque those motors produce really help move those big center consoles. Giving them better low end and mid range then the previous 400R’s. And it’s significantly noticeable!
Depends on who is making the CC. Something like a Boston Whaler - Get the V10. You get the 6.44 HD gearcase. Meant to handle bigger heavier hull. Something like a Nor -Tech yea throw on some 500's. One of the issues the 450R had was blowing gearcases because they were being installed on large heavy CC's meant for V12's and now V10's.
if 7marine made 725 hp engines then it's not the fastest instead of mercury going in 50hp every year just come out with a 800hp and call it a day or even a 1000hp outboard
My 14’ fishing boat is calling
I think they need to revamp the 60-150 lineup for the small fast boats!
I agree!

7 marine didn’t own any of the parts so couldn’t compete with Mercury in terms of price to performance going forward.

Love the mystic on the thumbnail
I would have loved to see a Evinrude G2 V8. I think it would have been pretty fast and tourqy.
There is a reason they went out of business😂

Yep imagine a 3.86 big bore easy 600 Hp hell Dave bush was working on Formula 1 v6. 3.3 that made 500 Hp and turned 9000 rpm

Well in saltwater it won’t last so you loose 12 k every year 7 years max you can’t find a 4 STK over 7 years that isn’t junk
@@gregsmith8032why won’t it last?
Are the dealers upcharging due to demand, because they weren’t that much when they came out!
I would put one on my 20ft Bullet bass boat 🚤💨💨💨 My Mercury Sports XS 225 hp with sports master lower unit does 84mph, could you imagine a 500R 😍
When are we going to get another Boat of the Year video? Have not seen one since 2020.
It may not be a production engine, but OMC still holds the record for fastest single outboard powered boat!
I’d put six of them on a 59' Tirranna from Cigarette
Big wallet guy
best move out of your mum's house and get a job to pay for that then :)
Perfect for the 40 Invincible cat or the Freeman 42,43 or 47 500x4
Will mount twin 500R. On a Brim Boats Seawolf 825 :)
Id put the 500R on my 3 favorite outboard cats. Mystic Gen 2 C4000...DCB 37...OL 37....The wife wants me to get the Mystic M4200 with Quad 500's.

I never said most powerful… 🤦♂️
How about the most powerful of any company that’s still in business?
Fjordling 17. But some crazy Norwegian guy have already done that🫤
I am thinking of a 500 R on a plate alloy 7.5 m centre console.. possibly a little over powered and still considering if it is the right match up.
might actually be fine
Five of them behind a midnight express 43open, that will be nice. They will be push it over 100mph i think

Way outta my league lol, but beautiful engineering/ design...

what is the brand and model please ?
4 500R 43' Midnight Express Open Mercury
im putting that on my carolina skiff j14
Ya know superchargers create more torque than an extra cylinder bank, right? And for a lot cheaper and lower rpm
Bring back the 2.5 Drag.
38 Whaler Outrage, 3 of them
Better off with V12's on a Whaler that size.
How to afford these
600hp is coming ! If they shove same boost in the V8 as they did w the L6 it will be 600hp simple as that..add e85 and a tune we are looking at 700+
2 500R's on a MTI 420X 140 MPH pretty guaranteed 🤙🤙🤙🤙
Sure, but how long will it last given it is a Mercury?
I put 1 on a bass boat !!!
Which one

X3 on a 36ft Apache racing boat 🤔

one on Phantom 25

Randy Carson in Florida put a 450r on a liberator 22 and hit mid 120s. 500r is probably in the mid 130s if someone buys one.

In other words you could go to hawaii and take 10 sec to get there😂
