The main reason as to why I am watching videos regarding Darkweb is to understand how a pretty powerful character from my story could communicate with his "partners" from all over the world undetected, and how would the main heroes be able to eventually track him. Well, not really him, but rather several fake identities he used, but you get the point.

Been on the deep web before. Literally the only reason I went there is because in Welcome To The Game, there's a website where people write weird and funny confessions and I wanted to see if it actually existed. Basically as long as you don't do anything illegal, you're fine.

That's not unrealistic. A lot of my close family members worked as FBI investigators, cyber FBI and much more and that's actually true. That's how they find you. Not mentioning documentaries from real FBI agents on the internet on how they bait or hack Deep web illegals. You could even find their videos on the FBI official youtube account. Just don't do anything illegal and you'll be fine. I haven't spent an extended amount of time on the dark web, but I've been there a couple times just to check it out. That was years ago though so who knows how much it's changed since then.
it's actually not illegal to visit the Dark Web, it's only illegal to purchase or do actual illegal things on there. Just browsing is fine. The only thing I'd watch out for is hackers. Either way though, I don't see much use to actually going to the Dark Web. I tried it once or twice out of curiousity and it's awfully slow and since I have no intention to buy anything on there, it's a huge waste of time. You might as well watch a youtube video of someone exploring it if you are curious enough.
It's ashame you can go to prison just for seeing things online. Law enforcement would rather send people to prison instead of protecting kids and people online.
It is scary. I've clicked on a number of links that sent me to pages with material I did NOT ask for, and I've been terrified ever since, just because I saw it. I guess you could always try to explain away your intentions to an officer if you were actually caught, but being in the situation in the first place is already pretty incriminating.
If you are purchasing harmful content (non-consenting individuals, for example), then from the perspective of law enforcement, you are creating demand for these illegal and very harmful crimes. "Seeing things online" can be much more harmful than purchasing drugs, because there may necessarily be a victim in your crime.

The website intends to entice you to send them money in return of such illegal and harmful content. You aren't creating demand by simply being on the website and not purchasing. Many of these people violated the basic "best practices" for using the tor network. If you really care about anonymity, you must boot a different operating system that writes nothing to disk. Under no circumstances should any data be stored locally on a networked computer, and any private encryption keys should be stored encrypted with a strong passphrase. This just scratches the surface of this topic, and I am not any kind of expert, but I can tell you that achieving anonymity is possible--it just takes discipline and a lot more effort than most people are willing to put in.
He's not talking about linux on a VM but that's one way. There are operating systems such as TAILS that are designed for browsint the dark web and leaving no trace on your computer. Linux on a VM leaves traces on the VM.

I've never heard if the dark web until I saw a animated horrors episode about it. I can't believe those running the site can get away since everything on the internet is traceable. My guess is that they pick off homeless, prostitutes, or runaways as their victims since those people go largely unnoticed by society when they go missing. It makes me shudder to think about it

Yeah... this isn’t how I got caught. My vendor kept my address on his computer, and the FBI set up an old style sting operation by ordering packages from him, and tracking down where he came from. His mule kept using the same return addresses with the same mailboxes after getting lazy, and then gave him up when he was caught. Luckily, the DA prosecuting the case saw us all as victims and I wasn’t charged with anything, but I’m sure not everyone gets that lucky...

That's not unrealistic. A lot of my close family members worked as FBI investigators, cyber FBI and much more and that's actually true. That's how they find you. Not mentioning documentaries from real FBI agents on the internet on how they bait or hack Deep web illegals. You could even find their videos on the FBI official youtube account. Just don't do anything illegal and you'll be fine. I haven't spent an extended amount of time on the dark web, but I've been there a couple times just to check it out. That was years ago though so who knows how much it's changed since then.
it's actually not illegal to visit the Dark Web, it's only illegal to purchase or do actual illegal things on there. Just browsing is fine. The only thing I'd watch out for is hackers. Either way though, I don't see much use to actually going to the Dark Web. I tried it once or twice out of curiousity and it's awfully slow and since I have no intention to buy anything on there, it's a huge waste of time. You might as well watch a youtube video of someone exploring it if you are curious enough.

Do not buy/sell anything and give out personal info like emails/name on any dark web website.

It is scary. I've clicked on a number of links that sent me to pages with material I did NOT ask for, and I've been terrified ever since, just because I saw it. I guess you could always try to explain away your intentions to an officer if you were actually caught, but being in the situation in the first place is already pretty incriminating.

The website intends to entice you to send them money in return of such illegal and harmful content. You aren't creating demand by simply being on the website and not purchasing. If you haven't entered that website with the intent to actively be involved in that crime, especially if you did not know what kind of website this was, I feel like that should not constitute guiltiness of a crime.

Many of these people violated the basic "best practices" for using the tor network. If you really care about anonymity, you must boot a different operating system that writes nothing to disk. Under no circumstances should any data be stored locally on a networked computer, and any private encryption keys should be stored encrypted with a strong passphrase. This just scratches the surface of this topic, and I am not any kind of expert, but I can tell you that achieving anonymity is possible--it just takes discipline and a lot more effort than most people are willing to put in.

He's not talking about linux on a VM but that's one way. There are operating systems such as TAILS that are designed for browsint the dark web and leaving no trace on your computer. Linux on a VM leaves traces on the VM.

I've never heard if the dark web until I saw a animated horrors episode about it. I can't believe those running the site can get away since everything on the internet is traceable. My guess is that they pick off homeless, prostitutes, or runaways as their victims since those people go largely unnoticed by society when they go missing. It makes me shudder to think about it

Yeah... this isn’t how I got caught. My vendor kept my address on his computer, and the FBI set up an old style sting operation by ordering packages from him, and tracking down where he came from. His mule kept using the same return addresses with the same mailboxes after getting lazy, and then gave him up when he was caught. Luckily, the DA prosecuting the case saw us all as victims and I wasn’t charged with anything, but I’m sure not everyone gets that lucky...
