there's a documentary on youtube called "fly colt fly: the legend of the barefoot bandit" that covers the story in dramatic fashion. its quite entertaining, if you're interested.
Incredibly sad. One of my friends from high school had a mom & living situation like this. She OD’d and died in front of him before we graduated, CPS had never intervened in any way & didn’t then because he was recently 18. With a rental trailer-home and no way to pay for it, he was instantly homeless. We all tried as best we could (for 18-20 year olds) to help him out financially & socially, and he actually did surprisingly well for a bit almost saving up to afford his apartment... but then his mom’s genes kicked in. 10 years later, he has full blown schizophrenia, is still homeless, dangerously suspicious of doctors & _anybody_ who tries to help, and is constantly self-medicating with alcohol and other shit. The mental illness would’ve set in eventually, but I can’t help but believe it was only made quicker by the circumstances & I think a lot about how things could’ve been so different if he truly got the help he needed as a child.
Colton is way above average smart, as a teenager he managed to scape the country two times, play with the cops literally in front of them, managed to learn how to fly planes somewhat successfully and he never had to hurt a single person, which is why his story is so likeable, he is literally a IRL Robinhood. The fact that he did all of this and got a reduced sentence to start his life is probably the most badass story I’ve heard all year.
The difference between a Colton and “his friend Harley” couldn’t be more clear. One gets arrested trying steal an 1000lb safe from a church, and the other soars through the skies like an angel spitting on the cop cars below.
Hard to dislike Colton. Smart, resourceful, nonviolent, methodical, came from nothing. If he was raised by a good mother, his odds would have drastically improved. He needed some love.
I'm just happy he didn't hurt anyone he mostly didn't steal from anyone who couldn't pay it back and he only stole when needed (mostly) He just lived life, but as a side note how he got caught was embarrassing
There’s a critical window between ages 11 and 20 where guidance and good parenting are the difference between two end results while equal in ability, intelligence, potential and courage, but distinct in title: Scholar/Genius or Criminal Mastermind……both of which would be intriguing and amazing in their own regard.
His first conviction for stolen property came at age 12, and by the time he was 13, he had three more. He has been diagnosed with depression, attention deficit disorder and intermittent explosive disorder. Neighbors said they made several calls to Child Protective Services, believing he was neglected or abused. His father, Gordon, used drugs and was in prison while Moore was a toddler. Nah, his life was f'ed from the start.
At least he has an actually quite awesome rap to go to prison for. "What you in for?" "Oh I knocked over five liquor stores, you?" "I stole six airplanes while on the run from the FBI." - Instant respect...
You've got to admit. The kid really can adapt and pick up on shit quick. I mean, breaking into that many places and getting away the few times he was caught. Wild.
I couldn't imagine living on that ever-fluid edge so often. I live my entire life planning and building it to avoid such desperation...Yet he found a way to be so comfortable with it he even liked it.
Big deal. The dumb kid does not deserve to be idolized. Considering his airplane escapades, he doesn't strike me as smart at all. A kid who learns calculus on his own is more deserving, for example.
Criminal at any given time he could have crashed that plane in to people killing many just because he got lucky running out of gas out to save his. On ass not caring if he killed yours do to being a criminal making poor judgement pointing guns at people the kid has issues and a dangerous person in the community.
The fact that his shithead alcoholic mother wasn't charged with child abuse speaks volumes to the real priorities of this nation. My mother was single, poor, and an alcoholic, therefore I empathize heavily with people with similar experiences. Also, I'm exactly the same age as this dude, so massive props to him for taking the reigns on his life when it was forcibly ripped away from him at such a young age. Hope he turns his life around, massive respect.
@@killajoy923 yep. In America, if you're not rich, nobody gives a shit about you, and you get shit on until you can claw your way out of your situation
Maybe that is where he's at! being a secret agent of the goverment! I wouldn't be surprised that's the reason he went off grid... which makes his story even more incredible if it's true. Truly a golden video game story material.
The authorities did nothing to help him when he was a child with no resources and literally surviving on his own, but then turned him into a supervillain and spent countless tax dollars to catch him and lock him up. Honestly a lot of people failed Colton and he deserved a lot better his whole life. I do not blame him for turning to robbery and I’m sorry he suffered so much in his young life. I really wished the local authorities would have him helped him when he was being neglected and abused by his alcoholic mother
He was being helped. He ran from that help when he left the unfenced group home. He wanted to live on his terms, that is, until he realizes that it's a dead end street.

The barefoot bandit, I remember all this. This kid is legendary, I've been waiting on the movie forever. He broke into a store, if I remember right, found a laptop with flight a simulator stayed the night there and practiced. Next day he stole his first plane and struck out across the country. His ingenuity and natural intelligence are off the charts. Everyone can learn something from his story.
I worked in the prison where he served out his sentence. He was a quiet, nice guy, and we were happy to see him get regular visits from Boeing executives. People like him need redirection, not a prison sentence.
@trashbag nothing in his life would have been any different if you had been sending a few hundred bucks per month. The complications in his past go beyond money. And just like everyone else, he can blame his parents for his problems, but then who’s responsible for his successes? And if he can blame his parents, they can blame theirs. And they can blame theirs. We all make decisions based on our own previous experiences. His life seems to be leveling off, and in the end, he’ll wear his past as a point of pride. He’ll be more successful than I am. And I’m sure he’ll deserve it. Hope you’re taking care of yourself.

If they can afford those toys, they can afford the insurance. But if I’m in a bad spot because of my parents, I’m a victim to them. And there’s no way I could improve if I had to live under that. If bitterness and blame works for you, keep it.
Bro, this kid outsmarted entire governments in multiple countries. You telling me he wasn't hired by any of them? He outsmarted the FBI, homeland security, candian law enforcement, and Bahamas law enforcement. If it wasn't for his ego with the boat, I don't think they would have ever caught him. Though it seems like he has a good life now so that is good.
if it's in someone's blood to outsmart everyone and never surrender it would probably not be a good idea for an intelligence or law enforcement agency to employ him. sure, he might be experienced and smart and do the job asked of him perfectly, but such agencies rely on a hierarchy to keep their employees in line, and he would certainly not bend to their will. The boundary between someone overstepping their boundaries slightly using creative techniques and someone going rogue at such an agency is up to interpretation. intelligence and security agencies are massive and complex beasts, and i guess they're full of inefficiencies and dodgy projects some people might find unethical. as someone gains experience they might become disillusioned. "familiarity breeds contempt", and a person like him will act on contempt
@@sheikchilli8670 Bro let's call it how it is. He definitely had a long sit down with multiple higher ups and maybe even helped out with a few operations. @@dylono.t.2509 nah sheik is right. I like Colton, he seems like a cool dude and id love to party with him. but c'mon, criminal prodigy? definitely not. this whole video isnt gassing him up as a genius, its really just showing how inept the police are. aside from avoiding filling his car with gas, most everything he did was just, normal stuff you would do in his situation. he made a lot of mistakes, and caught some lucky breaks. its an incredible story, but he isn't a genius criminal. and yeah, i dont think any government agency would want to work with him on anything short or long term. youre right he doesnt have to have a permanent position to work for the government, but what do you honestly think he could tell them they couldnt easily learn from watching this video? i imagine most of what he would say is "convince pilots not to leave the keys to their planes in their planes" and "maybe the same with boats lol". other than that, there isnt much they can do to prevent another case like his. the rich will continue to leave their vacation homes unattended. improved tracking of stolen cards and identities was something they were working on well before Colton and will continue to improve for as long as identities can be stolen. so yeah. idk what you think he could have helped with. would love to hear it though, im sure youve got at least one wild idea i havent thought of.
"outsmart" A murderer hasn't outsmarted the authorities when they kill someone. For the most part they exist to punish those who actually commit a crime. The US has very stringent jurisdiction and bureaucracy especially in fringe edge cases. The fact a 15 year old could exploit this isn't evidence the 15 year old is a super genius, but that things could be improved. He is probably a smart guy, that being said.

This kind of story, while I don't support criminal activity, is actually incredibly motivational. I look at my life and the things I have to deal with day to day, and some days just want to give up. But seeing how this kid, a young kid, managed to evade the FBI and do things to an absolute insane extent, gives me this weird hope that no matter what goes on, no matter what I am faced with, I can overcome it. He had it rough, super rough, from all the people he was supposed to trust. His mother, the school system, the police, etc., and he managed to fight back hard against it all. And he never hurt anyone either. I hope the best for him, cause God he deserves it
the fact that they could have took him in from the beginning and helped him heal from his family trauma instead of leaving him to suffer and turn to a life of crime to survive really tells you a lot about society

look, he knew he couldn't run all the time. They were always there, chasing his tail. At the end they would either catch him up, or somebody would respond to his weapon with their weapon. I think he had options, but he decided to end this there, possibly even before he stole the boat.
His day to day life was probably not that great. Either roughing it in the woods or constantly paranoid in people's homes. No friends, no girlfriends, no family... As he got older that must have worn him down. He probably wanted it to end one way or another.

Bullied at school (because kids are vicious). Over time, he learned to be self-sufficient. None of this is his fault. Wherever he is now, I wish him well.

With an absent father and alchoholic mother Colton could have gone down a way worse path, but I respect how he basically acted out of necessity in a careful way to avoid harming others. Targetting vacation homes and fancy private cars/boats/planes that would be owned by people who are well off and that likely wouldn't be there for a confrontation, not hurting or killing anyone, just taking things he needed like food, appliances and money... Giving to help animals and being polite when speaking to others. I'm glad the courts were consistenly lenient on him, because as many crimes as he had commited, people do far worse and hurt more people and get less than what he served. His time in prison is less of a punishment and more time to reflect to get out and change his life, a second chance, somethign that is rarely the goal with jails.
none of this was out of necessity... he should have gotten alot more time than he did. 6 years for 67 felonies in 3 countries is ridiculous and inexcusable. people do far less and get much more time than him
After such shenanigans, I’m guessing he would be if he was trained in CIA considering he actually knew the real life experience of being chased and hiding, so he could use those skills against the criminals and think outside the box.

The selfies he took in the woods while actively being hunted by the FBI will forever be iconic. The angles and lighting were magazine-ready.

"familiarity breeds contempt", and a person like him will act on contempt

and yeah, i dont think any government agency would want to work with him on anything short or long term. youre right he doesnt have to have a permanent position to work for the government, but what do you honestly think he could tell them they couldnt easily learn from watching this video?
i imagine most of what he would say is "convince pilots not to leave the keys to their planes in their planes" and "maybe the same with boats lol".
other than that, there isnt much they can do to prevent another case like his. the rich will continue to leave their vacation homes unattended. improved tracking of stolen cards and identities was something they were working on well before Colton and will continue to improve for as long as identities can be stolen.

"outsmart"
A murderer hasn't outsmarted the authorities when they kill someone. For the most part they exist to punish those who actually commit a crime. In the end, possibly, he called cops on his location only to move back to another hideout, basically to make a more space for himself.
His day to day life was probably not that great. Either roughing it in the woods or constantly paranoid in people's homes. No friends, no girlfriends, no family... As he got older that must have worn him down. He probably wanted it to end one way or another.

I mean he made very little mistakes in what he actually did end up doing, besides not paying attention to fuel gages and the gps, also lack of knowledge of maps. If someone else was put in his position, really low chance they would get away with it for as long as he did.

You have to give respect to the judge, he recognized that tragedy of his upbringing and also gave some respect to the plight of his escapes. Gave a light sentence and wished him well. This judge could have easily thrown the book at him and effectively ruin the rest of his life. But he didn't, instead he recognized "triumph of the human spirit" and I'm sure took into account his age and determination. Imagine how far he could have gone with that determination with the proper upbringing

THE BAREFOOT BANDIT and FLY COLT FLY are two documentaries about him.
The barefoot bandit. This kid is a legend where i come from. Its quite literally incredible. This kid has become part of the stories you tell to your kids like tom sawyer.
The fact he learnt how to fly a fucking plane at ONLY 16 by playing Flight Simulator is incredibly impressive. If only he put his brain to work for good, he would definitely become successful.
It seems his whole life he had to focus on just surviving, some people cant focus on success when they dont have basic needs met
Gotta say he successful make a history of his own n will be remembered and he's name will be inmortal and his story were to last for a long time now, I mean what else could u wish more 🤨success ?And everything just gone after u died
I rather be remembered by living the life he dealt with than to be just successful and died somehow
I agree with everything the judge said at the end. We have no comprehension of what he has been through. He has had to feed himself since he was 3 or 4 years old most likely. Bullied at school (because kids are vicious). Over time, he learned to be self-sufficient. None of this is his fault. Wherever he is now, I wish him well.
I think saying none of it is his fault is really pushing it very far. No matter how bad and unfairly youve been treated by the world, that still doesnt give you a license to commit crimes. I know Ill be hated for thinking this.

The Police and FBI are not the brightest that’s how.
I remember this case and it was hilarious what this kid managed to do
Evaded better than most for a lot longer, even flourished. Shame though he can’t make money off it but the punishment makes sense. IMO he should’ve taken the 50K if that deal was even real.
6 years for 67 felonies in 3 countries is ridiculous and inexcusable. people do far less and get much more time than him
Mom can we get gta 6
- no we have gta at home

I’m fully convinced that if this kid had any sort of adult guidance growing up he’d have been one of the most successful CIA operatives in history
if theres not much known about him nowadays who knows maybe they hired him because of how skillful he is
What a loss for the world if that happened
Which is kind of funny, as bad parents lead to stealing from the rich and good parents lead to hating the poor
After such shenanigans, I’m guessing he would be if he was trained in CIA considering he actually knew the real life experience of being chased and hiding, so he could use those skills against the criminals and think outside the box.
