guys , be practical. you can’t convert a 10 gal tank without at least using some power tools. don’t give this guy shit because you guys think “of i can totally make this without a drill” like really and drills are only like 20-30 dollars.
I’m looking to convert my 20L screen lid to something like this. My conundrum is I use a CHE and a Fluval Nano plant light so I have to figure out how to incorporate them.
you guys know a baby or juvenile isnt suppost to have more than 10 gallons right?...this is a beginner cage set up lol you can wait a year before having to upgrade to a 20 gallon, so its perfectly fine for the cresty
Any tips on how to give some UV light to the geckos with the issue that UV doesn’t go through Glass for the reptile. Also how would you also heat the viv for a gecko dealing with the glass top. Heat mat on the back or something. Just wanna hear what you’d do personally. Thanks! Great vid!
I converted a 29 gallon to a vivarium and I'm having a very hard time watering the plants while keeping the humidity down, did those large vents successfully get airflow into the tank?
Jenner Hernandez crested geckos don’t need a light, but you could honestly remove the acrylic from the top of the tank and replace with mesh , more work but if you want to use it for a reptile that needs a light you might be better off doing that or just buying the tank
rly helpful, thanks! ive had a 10 gal sitting around with no purpose for a while now, and ive been planning on getting a crestie at the reptile expo this year. thisll make getting him an enclosure together way easier
I just had a question. Someone posted this in a group I’m in and I was wondering why not use acrylic on the whole thing instead of the sintra? It would increase the viewing area.
This build is very cool looking, but how do you light something like this? I would think that heat lamps would make the glass too hot to safely house geckos, and I have heard that UV light does not pass through glass easily. What is the work around for this?
Heat mat is your better option. Lighting this type of cage would be suitable for more of a nocturnal species that can thrive without UVB as the glass would filter that as well.
@@Reptiledge thank you very much! This is very creative id like to try it out even if I'm not keeping anything in it its a fun project for an old aquarium I have 👍
You would probably had to do thin pieces of Sintra down the sides rather then on the top and bottom. The locks would be another story, you could see if the fit was tight enough and add knobs that have a latch, if not you might have to use a piece of Sintra down the center for the doors to connect and shut on.
Great video, looks really nice for something made DIY relatively quick. I don't get the complaints about "expensive tools" though, an acrylic cutting tool is cheap and drills are almost always on sale at Lowes, Home Depot, Harbor, etc.
How do you heat it? Is Thermal tape powerful enough to go through the glass? I once had a heat lamp pointed at my glass and it cracked the glass, never like glass for reptiles but it can be affordable at times.
XPTwistedXP Right. However, if you want brand new without paying high price. Petco sales tanks at $1 per gallon. They do this once a year so you have to just keep an eye. I went to Petco one day, just randomly, to visit. & it was perfect timing. The $1 a gallon sale was on & I got me a 55 gallon for 58 bucks (ya know.. taxes lol).. but yeah, idk if they still do this. Check into it. Otherwise just look for used tanks online
where did you get your locks from, Thanks:) Also you just made me realise that i dont need to buy a tank for my Crested Gecko that im getting because i currently have a 50 gallon tank sat in my spare room which was used for my two terrapins but they grew out of it , so i can just convert it hah, thank you:)
they definitely benefit from it and the glass will filter out almost all of it. but the small amount that gets through can still help. you would need to choose a different method if you wanted to provide true uvb though.
wait people are actually complaining that the TOOLS he used cost money? What planet do you live on where you can make things like tanks without tools? Plus, most of the products can be cut with regular box cutters instead of a table saw, google exists for a reason.
I'm so jealous that the tanks in the USA (and Canada) always have this black frame. Here in Germany, the tanks are only glass and you can't even buy these frames... I assume you can also just glue the parts directly on the glass, but it won't look as good :/
Paul-Robin Franz and we are over here jelous cause here rimless tanks are expensive. I did manage to remove the frame from a 5 gallon but any larger than that is impossible
make sure the silicone is not mold resistant as this kills animals especialy if your using this for a arboreal Tarantula set up need to be aquarium silicone
Jordan Nicole idk if it was in April. They did already have one I think? They typically do it twice a year or something like that. I saw it on a comment Petco made on their Facebook photo. If I could insert the screenshot for you I would.
Dani Foucault Ethridge doesnt matter, baby creasties are an animal. green anoles and small feeder lizards work perfectly fine. he didn’t say it was a forever home, so many baby reptiles can do just fine. :)
I get what you say about a small tank and build. But I'd just get a 50 gallon fish tank top open only. Or something with fans. Just saying. Or a real terrarium. That you spend time modding other ways.
Skylark Lee how is the equipment expensive? can easily cut the acrylic with a xacto blade or utility knife. only thing you would need is a drill. which has unlimited number of uses after this project. cost $15 at harbor freight. really not expensive at all if you budget. just another cry baby on a great tutorial.
If you need to be doing enclosures on the cheap then you probably shouldn’t be purchasing the animal that goes inside. So..... Not to mention power tools aren’t exactly that expensive and are a reusable usually one time purchase. Also there sometimes just isn’t a way to make these enclosures without power tools 🤷🏻♂️ tired of seeing people always complain about not having power tools. Ok and? Buy some or get over it and just use a plastic tub.
The fact is, it isn't really just $25 to make. Tools used to make this should be considered. Whether it's drills, bits, saws or some kind of blade. You're going to need more than just $25 to get it done.
This is a great DIY and video! But what would make it even greater were links to the supplies :)
guys , be practical. you can’t convert a 10 gal tank without at least using some power tools. don’t give this guy shit because you guys think “of i can totally make this without a drill” like really and drills are only like 20-30 dollars.
That saw is a little more than 30$ though..
CT Wild just use a different type, research
I’m looking to convert my 20L screen lid to something like this. My conundrum is I use a CHE and a Fluval Nano plant light so I have to figure out how to incorporate them.
Can I buy some of the front peices premade by you for $25 and ill just attach them to my own 10 gal? I have no tools
A list of where you found all of the supplies would be much appreciated.
I'm having trouble find the lock, sintra, and mesh vents. any help?
Randomation not exactly $0.67 Lol but thanks for posting the link!
Hey, where did you buy the small round screens? Or what are they called? Thanks for the video!!!
+Arlene S roundvents.com
Screen mesh
5 years later
Y’all are worried about the power tools and I’m worried that it’s only 10 gallons
NeverWithoutNalani i know right 😔 just treat your animals right people!!!
Given the same technique would work perfectly for up to about a 40b.... maybe take the basic idea for what it is.
actually, animals like feeder lizards and new born creasties do great
I feel like mourning geckos or other micro geckos would do fine, so long as there are no holes or gaps big enough for them to escape through
you guys know a baby or juvenile isnt suppost to have more than 10 gallons right?...this is a beginner cage set up lol you can wait a year before having to upgrade to a 20 gallon, so its perfectly fine for the cresty

Remove the top panel of glass and glue in a framed screen.
Where did you buy Sintra for .67?
God bless my crested gecko love its new cage
That's a little too small for an adult if that's what you have
It looks great! If you wanted to use glass instead of acrylic, though, what size thickness would be best to use?
I converted a 29 gallon to a vivarium and I'm having a very hard time watering the plants while keeping the humidity down, did those large vents successfully get airflow into the tank?
Do you use any lights up top, if so what do you use
where can I buy the mesh screen?
Reptile_Edge thanks a lot. that's cheaper than I thought
What size exo terra should I get for two baby crested geckos? I will be getting them in a week and need to buy the set up.
+Madii Foster you should house them separately. And start with something small like a 6qt bin and work them up to a 12*12*18 or 18*18*24
This is too small for an adult crestie, but you could make a kickass treefrog or anole setup
I actually did a similar build with a 150 gallon... For my "colony" of 6 anoles...
@@reillygrimley9542 cool story bro 😎
@@reillygrimley9542 sounds dope, I'd love to see it
Do you just use a heat lamp and rest it right on the glass for your heat source?
Is that enough ventilation
Yooo, thank you so much. I've been wondering how I could diy the tank I have now. Good vid man
This video is great, my only problem is where do I put my lamp lmao, i can't just place on the top.
Edit : I wanna make a bigger thank for my veiled chameleon. Similar to this design.
this is my exact question!
Could always clamp it so it doesn’t touch the glass. Or a lamp stand
Jenner Hernandez crested geckos don’t need a light, but you could honestly remove the acrylic from the top of the tank and

How do you do you lighting set up since the top isn't mesh
Crested Geckos don't always need UVB or heat. If you keep your room between 70 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit you'll be fine.
If you still have a glass top how do you light and heat the tank for a Crested Gecko. I don't have the best heat in my room as I am a renter.
rly helpful, thanks! ive had a 10 gal sitting around with no purpose for a while now, and ive been planning on getting a crestie at the reptile expo this year. thisll make getting him an enclosure together way easier
10 gallons are way too small for adult cresties. But you can still use this idea for a bigger one
I literally NEVER like videos but you deff got my like.
I just had a question. Someone posted this in a group I’m in and I was wondering why not use acrylic on the whole thing instead of the sintra? It would increase the viewing area.
PVC is cheaper. That's the only thing
Great video and I didn't even need a list of links to find the parts!!! I must be a genius, I found hinges and screws with out a link lol.
It’s looks great but wouldn’t it need more ventilation than that? Maybe even cross ventilation
This build is very cool looking, but how do you light something like this? I would think that heat lamps would make the glass too hot to safely house geckos, and I have heard that UV light does not pass through glass easily. What is the work around for this?
They don't need neither...
I'm curious about the k
Lighting? .....if I need heat bulb won't the glass crack over time if not instantly..?
The lighting*
Heat mat is your better option. Lighting this type of cage would be suitable for more of a nocturnal species that can thrive without UVB as the glass would filter that as well.

You would probably had to do thin pieces of Sintra down the sides rather then on the top and bottom. Can someone give me a solution to having no seam around the tank where a lid would have sat. My tank is literally 5 pieces of glass???
how would you go about making the door open sideways? Is it pretty straightforward?
