Hey everyone and welcome back to another vivarium build! What do you think? This setup came with a lot of obstacles, but that allowed me to demonstrate new techniques that I haven’t shown yet. Of course you get a little update on the other two vivs from the conversion series as well, which are doing great. Also, sorry for getting in a lot of the shots, it was pretty difficult to build in this space without blocking the camera. Usually I can film from the sides of the enclosure. You're probably wondering when I'm going to stock these. I will be doing it probably in late summer. I want to finish a few looming projects first and I have to rearrange my room... again! I have some really unique things coming up. Check the video description for additional links and as always thank you for watching! If you enjoyed this video please hit that thumbs up, share and subscribe (if you haven't already). You can also follow me on Instagram @serpadesign. Unfortunately my phone broke yesterday, so I won't be active on IG for the next few days. :'(
SerpaDesign would it be okay to put a snake plant in this because i am planning on using this for a crested gecko and it would make a good hide spot and a dew drop collector
Omg How amazing is that? Such a talent, you're truly inspiring Tanner. I hope you enjoyed your vacation and thanks for this amazingly creative demonstration!
Wonderful video! I love your commentary. Also, you're very modest about your abilities, but rest assured that your vivariums are beautifully composed; you have a great eye for composition and natural symbiance.
Carnivorous plant terrariums are really hard to make, almost every carnivorous plant needs a couple hours of direct sunlight a day to survive/thrive. and where the tropical species need high temp and high humidity, the temperate species need lower temps and a dormant period during the winter at which the temps need to drop below 12C for the plants to survive. i have tried multiple times to make one, some succesful, some not. and even the ones where it was succesful they grew and survived but didnt thrive. now im keeping them in a bog garden outside year long and they are doing perfect :p
Been studying your terrariums and was also hoping for an orchid one too but will make do as i am starting mine this month and researching ideas and ways of doing it..back to your video..
Wow, I mean... Wow... I've been heavily involved in the planted aquarium hobby for the last 4/5 years, & have been looking for something new... TYVM for inspiring me to enter this similar & yet completely different aspect of something I already love... And, just, wow... You have mad skills bro...
I'm listening to lectures online so I have this video muted and on 1.5 speed, and every once in a while I see the fish tank in the background, but at 1.5 speed the fish are buzzing around like they're all hyped up on coffee and it's amazing. 10:05 (the tank is pretty impressive, too ;) )
This is my new favorite series! Can't wait to try this with a 20 for my gargoyle gecko! Needs a few tweaks for him to be perfect, but it's amazing and super helpful!!
I think it looks sweet! surely will be greater when it grows in. I like that you used the husk fibers. I just built my first tank that has foam background and sides, but ran out of foam half way up sides so just siliconed, and added crushed coco fiber to its entirety after siliconing. came out fairly nice, especially for my first try, but the panels you used would have worked better. will use those in the future. superglue was surprising to see in this video, but definitely easy and something I will use in the future as well. thanks for posting!
Nice job! I find that it takes about 6mos to a year before the tank is mature. So I like it sparse to start with or otherwise I am trimming like crazy down the road. I love the look of this rock background and may try this at some point. Thanks for the wonderful videos you create and I remain an avid fan :-)
Haha so true! That's kind of like what happened to the one in the middle, but I definitely like how it looks. You're welcome and thank you for supporting my channel!
Watching your videos inspired me to make a custom natural crested gecko enclosure! It's only half done right now, but by august it will be planted and starting its growth!
When I first came across Tanner's channel, I spent 4 hours watching his vids. I had square eyes by the time I'd done....but I was a lot more knowledgeable! :D
You are very in touch with nature Serpa, I wish your channel the best of luck! As a request, please do a day gecko Vivarium build as my day gecko and I feel like he needs a MAJOR upgrade in his tank
Hi, I just discovered your channel, I saw this video on my homepage. I just want to say this video and your vivarium is amazing!! I'm also a big animal lover and hope I can also build a couple vivariums my self one day. I'm sure your other creations are just as wonderful, will watch all your video's soon! ;) Beautiful work, thank you!
That super glue planting method is interesting. I can see how it's beneficial when trying to train a plant to grow onto your hardscape, but for the life of me I can't understand why you didn't just use wire staples when attaching the creeping fig to the coco fiber. It looked like you had to deal with gluing your skewer in place a few times, among other issues, like waiting for the glue to dry between applications. Is there another benefit to this method that I'm perhaps just not getting? I'd be interested to see some videos on humidity control & ventilation. My first dart frog vivarium has been planted for about a week now, and it's clear that my 1.5" wide vent along the back is insufficient to achieve cycles of humidity- it easily remains near 100% down near the floor, but I'd like to see it drop to 60-70% between mistings. So now I have ordered a muffin fan and a humidistat controller that I hope will solve the issue. Since hygrometers are notoriously unreliable _within_ a misted environment, I intend on running the fan based on the humidity _outside_ of the vivarium, and it will blow outside air in provided the humidity in the room is at least _n_%. Please stop me if you think this may be a mistake!
Hey bro. You’re about to explode in the rare plant community. I would suggest making vertical vivarium/terrariums specifically for plants! U just made my life so easy thank u. I was thinking of making a natural background but I didn't wanna use the foam or the foam spray I feel in a 12×12×18 its gonna take up to much space n gonna look even tighter. The cork fiber smart af
I truly love your work. My grandson of 12 and I are planning on trying to build one for poison dart or arrow frogs. I am researching and needing advice on how much work and how often a week to do all the little things, like growing isopods and wingless fruitflies, to keep a steady healthy supply. I have watched you quite a bit and wonder if you have a book or written instructions for the care of these tanks and little creatures and the cost of the book or papers. Or if you could send me to a place I can get it or speak to someone not worried about a sale as much as guiding someone with true knowledge. Thank you bunches.
Hey, awesome video, I'm working on a similar build with a 20gal, and was wondering if it's possible to add a heating element to the tank? I keep my animals room at about 75° but would need this tank closer to 80°. Thoughts?
How do you light the tops if they're glass? I need the inside of mine to reach 85 degrees or so. Can I just cut that side of the silicone, pull off the panel and attach chicken wire? Or does pulling off a panel take away from the foundation?
Bromeliads generally don't like being attached to things that keep the base of the plant wet. Have you tried attaching tillandsias to that coco husk fiber before, and have you not had issues? I've lost more than a few guzmanias, neoregalias, and tillies to poor drainage over the last couple years, and that mounting on the coco fiber feels like it'll be bad news bears in about four months.
hi tanner, i am a big fan of yours and have been inspired by you to create a vertical vivarium, aiming for a mini Zhangjiajie mountains in China. with a river and the beautiful pillars of sandstone. I'm not going to keep animals in there, I'm making a false bottom like you make it. my question is whether I should add springtails in the soil mix. regards, Rob Kaagman, the Netherlands.
awesome build I was gonna do that with my 10 gal but I ended up just pulling the bottom out and stacking on another 10 so I got that 20 gallon tall. my 3 little guys seem happy being able to stretch out and jump across the tank. your videos have inspired me to do so many different things with my tank and many more to come. what is the best way to connect both 10 gallon tanks together so they don't slide?
I've done this before actually and it's quite easy. Keep one of the 10 gallons as is, completely in tact. Then remove the bottom pane of glass and the bottom frame on the other. Then this 10 gallon can siliconed right inside of the frame of the first. There are other ways you could go about it, but that's probably the easiest.
hey thanks for the advise I was thinking of using silicone to stick it together just couldn't figure out the black trim since the one 10 gallon didn't fit inside the trim but for now I just removed bottom pane and sat the tank on the other. il have to forward photos over to you and see what you think. but congrats on the 50k and I cant wait for your next video to come out
I think next time you do something like this, try to make all 3 of them look like 1 big one. Carry the background and hardscape through the glass. I think that would be pretty cool.
Can't wait to see it all grown in, this looks like it will be stunning in a few months! I'm sure it's been asked before, but couldn't find the answer: would you ever house cresties in any of these enclosures? (Also, rock on, you're the best)
I'm curious as to how well the ficus pumila cuttings settled in. Did they have small roots when you planted them? Also how invasive is the ficus - does it cover everything now?
I made my own and I love it. One thing I was wondering is how you get really nice acrylic pieces. Mine had a lot of issues and need a lot of sanding since it sometimes didn't snap right. Any feedback will help! Thanks.
Other than the first build, I cut all of it using a table saw. However should you do the score and snap method, just get a deep score before snapping. You will end up with a pretty clean edge.
Hey Tanner (or serpa squad), I've been planning a 12x12x12 paludarium for the better part of a year, most of that time has been spent just researching what animals could feasibly live in a 12x12x12 paludarium. I'm thinking reed frogs, as i want 5-6" for land, and the rest for a water area. I've been looking for wood types that won't mold in humidity, and even got a moss box and some ferns, isopods, and springtails ready to make it bioactive/ act as feeder food... but I'm anxious about actually setting it up. Last time i tried to keep anything it died from my OCD... I either over water or over clean. So I'm wondering if you or the serpa squad could give me some advice on how much I should water(change) /mist a 12x12x12? I've got: a button fern, mini Boston fern, oak leaf creeping fig, what I think is sphagnum, hairy, and star mosses. These I know I want in the enclosure. But I also got some umbrella palm and a Microcarpa ficus that I would like to incorporate into the build. I've got a thermostat probe, mini halogen lamp for the plants, and heat for the animals in the winter. I have a nitrate kit, but no filter yet, a 4w submersible pump for a waterfall feature. I've got foam to make a rock/vine 3d background, s1 silicone, super glue to stick vines. plastic mesh, diffuser crate, zip ties, Leca balls to fashion floating islands and separate the drainage layer and plants from the water in the front. Lastly, I've got hydraulic concrete, tubing of varying sizes, pool filter sand, peat moss , and pea pebbles to get the 3d background, "aqua" scape, and the water feature primmed and ready. iIs there anything I'm missing, or should focus more on for my enclosure? any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I might have been able to make two vivariums if I had done this. The one 18x18x24" exo terra, for a crested gecko, I built cost over $750! That includes tank and a $80 four tiered wire rack and $120 for the lizard. Still, super super expensive. I doubt I ever would've gone through with it, or gotten a crested gecko, had I known what it would cost.
Hello! Really great job. I wanted to ask you something that intrigues me. In the world of tropical terrariums for dendrobates, it has always been said that methacrylate is not a good material because the light from lamps for plants (which always simulates sunlight) ends up damaging it and turning the methacrylate yellow and opaque. Now I find myself in a situation in which I have a large amount of good quality methacrylate and it seems much better than glass for many reasons (weight, ease of drilling, etc). What can you tell me, I see that you have experience with these kind of terrariums and it has been more than 5 years since this video? Is it true or just another myth? A greeting and thanks in advance!
You should try keeping chameleons. They are great display animals and looks gorgeous in terrariums. If you make ventilation on the bottom and on the top, it will be enough. I successfully keep panther chams like that in planted glass vivariums. I would love to see you building chameleon vivarium.
I really liked your terraruims and I wanted to make one, but I didnt have that much space so I did some tiny bottle terraruims. At first they seem fine, but after a few days I saw some eggs near to the mouth of the bottles. I didnt put some springtails so now Im kinda wondering what they are. They are in clusters and are yellow.
Hey everyone and welcome back to another vivarium build! What do you think? This setup came with a lot of obstacles, but that allowed me to demonstrate new techniques that I haven’t shown yet. Hey, is acryl glass not prone to scratches?
do the plants survive if you just glue them to the wall?
UpperGoon there are some that are called air plants and they get their water from the humidity and also misting
SerpaDesign would it be okay to put a snake plant in this because i am planning on using this for a crested gecko and it would make a good hide spot and a dew drop collector

Please never stop making these!!! I love your vivariums so much and I'm always so happy when another video comes out.
Wonderful video! I love your commentary. Also, you're very modest about your abilities, but rest assured that your vivariums are beautifully composed; you have a great eye for composition and natural symbiance.
i can really tell how much respect you have for nature and it's so lovely to see! somehow it seems like your plants respect you too :)
I like the fish zipping around speed zone in the background :P
I was just gonna say that😂
Single best vivarium build video I have ever seen. 👍👍👍
can u make something like an orchid terrarium or a carnivorous plant terrarium?

The coco fiber sides was brilliant. It also helps to hold humidity for more tropical animals!!!!
Wow! Just beautiful. The way you set it up brings the eye all the way around in a circle. It really flows.
Wow! You are such an artist! I love it!!!!
00:12 Can we all just appreciate how happy these goldfish are?!
Terrific job both making and filming this vivarium build.
differance between viv and terr?
I'm listening to lectures online so I have this video muted and on 1.5 speed, and every once in a while I see the fish tank in the background, but at 1.5 speed the fish are buzzing around like they're all hyped up on coffee and it's amazing. 10:05 (the tank is pretty impressive, too ;) )
Im so happy, I finally finished my first vertical vivarium!!!
Amazing vivarium, also you were very eloquent when talking about nature! Totally agree :) take care and enjoy your vacation!
I think it looks beautiful. Especially with the other 2. All together they have a great balance to them. Really just lovely to look at.
This is my new favorite series! Can't wait to try this with a 20 for my gargoyle gecko! Needs a few tweaks for him to be perfect, but it's amazing and super helpful!!

I like your approach to things and your humility when describing the beauty of nature.

Great video....excellent tutorial. You demonstrate each step well....and explain every detail. Best tutorial I've seen on TH-cam in a very long time.
Watching your videos inspired me to make a custom natural crested gecko enclosure! It's only half done right now, but by august it will be planted and starting its growth!
the diy part, just amazing!
congrats man this is great to watch
Excellent video. Thank you for explaining each step and naming all the plants you used. You did a great job. Love it!
What a great video! In the hermit crab community we use a lot of the same materials and concepts.
Bro you'd make hella guap if you'd make and sell tanks I'd be first in line too
Gee preston me too
Mhm
Just found your channel!Going to have to binge watch your videos one day soon!
When I first came across Tanner's channel, I spent 4 hours watching his vids. I had square eyes by the time I'd done....but I was a lot more knowledgeable! :D
looks great can't wait to see an update
I appreciate he effort you put into your filming
I really want to make a paludarium set up and this has given me a great idea for a tank I have at the moment. Thank you
One of the better vids like this I have seen to date!
Haha thanks! I have a much better version coming out this year.
You are so talented and creative. Love your channel!
Your Cold Blooded with it! Thanks for the tips and knowledge!
Thank you for the tutorial! The design is really well done and I really like the coconut husk background. I'm going to be trying this.
You are very in touch with nature Serpa, I wish your channel the best of luck!
As a request, please do a day gecko Vivarium build as my day gecko and I feel like he needs a MAJOR upgrade in his tank
That was a lot of work and it looks stunning!! Great job, man!

it would be really cool to put a mantis in there
so awesome!! cant wait to start working on a vivarium for my Whites Tree frog 🤗
Hey bro. You’re about to explode in the rare plant community. I would suggest making vertical vivarium/terrariums specifically for plants! Looks great! The tillandsias really bring it together
You are my favorite poet!
Looks beautiful and natural. I'm amazed however how much glue goes into constructing a vivarium :)
U just made my life so easy thank u. I was thinking of making a natural background but I didn't wanna use the foam or the foam spray I feel in a 12×12×18 its gonna take up to much space n gonna look even tighter. The cork fiber smart af
You are one talented man, amazing work.👍
Absolutely beautiful triptic terrarium
Very nice video on how to do it yourself ! I think in time it gonna look awesome like the other tanks! Keep up the nice work :)
Supernice! Love your channel! I get so inspired, doing a similar thing with ants on my channel soon!
Nordic Ants cool, When will you get done?
I watched it
This guy deserves more subs
You have a great eye for details.
Is it safe to use a hot glue gin for the plants
No
Gorgeous vivariums.! Inspiring. Thankyou for sharing. Cant wait to get creative with my insect and tarantula pet enclosures.
WE NEED AN UPDATE ON THESE VIVARIUMS!!! Have they filled in well?
Great Vid! Quick question, do the plants get enough uvb to grow even thought the lights are filtered by glass?
I don't even use UVB lights on these tanks and they do fabulous. If I did though, I'm sure that a great deal of it would be filtered out.
I truly love your work. My grandson of 12 and I are planning on trying to build one for poison dart or arrow frogs.

great work. Love the sets of 3!
One more to go!
Hey, awesome video, I'm working on a similar build with a 20gal, and was wondering if it's possible to add a heating element to the tank? I keep my animals room at about 75° but would need this tank closer to 80°. Thoughts?
did you ever figure out how to add heating? im in the exact same situation currently
@@katelyn8937 I actually found a rack system where I could put my ball python tank under the bioactive one and the residual heat kept it at 80.
@@Dakotapaul002 alright interesting, thanks!
Im going to try and do a paludarium using a 20 gallon. Have me a bunch of good ideas. Keep at it man great vids
I really like this one!! But it's hard to decide which one is my favorite, this one , or the middle one🤔. Anyway, they are beautiful!!!👍👍
Nice build! Where do you get the bulkheads and flow valves for it?
Amazing video and amazing viv!
One more question. I need clearer instructions on how to place glass doors if I turn it vertically.
Another great build!!
How do you light the tops if they're glass? I need the inside of mine to reach 85 degrees or so.

This might sound weird but I find your videos super relaxing! Super impressive with your plant knowledge, do you mind if I ask what you studied?
I haven't slept in 24 hours and I have to move into my new place later today. I'm gonna finish this video regardless.
I am kinda jealous, I would never be able to do such a awesome vivarium :D
That's because you have it set in your mind that you can't. I have been making these things for quite awhile. It's all in practice.
Awesome build! You should get some disposable gloves for when you are working with silicone or other glues. PPE!
You are such a good wholesome boy and I love you.
hi tanner, i am a big fan of yours and have been inspired by you to create a vertical vivarium, aiming for a mini Zhangjiajie mountains in China. with a river and the beautiful pillars of sandstone. it is so cute what you said about arranging it in a way that's natural

Really pretty, would make a great lizard terrarium with a screen fitted in the front!
I love this! Very Nice Job
please do a carnivorous plant terrerium!
Working on it, a lot of people want to see that!
Awesome! thanks!
That would be really awesome! I recommend a rock wall background with cephalotus (Austrailian Pitcher plant) growing in it! Such a cool plant!
Very nice I have a nook that would look great in!
Wow,very good explanation, can i ask whats the power tool thats you are using?
This build is amazing! My question is where do you find the acrylic hinges and lock? Thanks for this helpful video.
Great job, thank you for your videos.👍
I've considered it, but I don't know if it's something I would do just yet. Maybe some day!
Sweet Christmas!
