    We did some research on a fascinating part of U.S. firearms history, the small, low caliber, inexpensive pistols made by manufacturers in the Los Angeles area who were given the nickname, the "Ring of Fire" companies.
    Raven, Jennings, Davis, AMT, Bryco, Lorcin, Phoenix, Cobra and Jimenez are linked in various complex ways to each other through family, business practice or firearm design.

    I remember my dad always carried a little 32 anytime we would go into DC or NYC. I always had a fondness for these cheap firearms. I feel these guns played a huge roll in the great budget firearms of today.

    The Jennings’s j22 is a terrifically fun little plinking 22, I have used them since there introduction, and if you experience any problems, all I have ever had to do is replace the 3 springs, ( action, striker and magazine) and they come back to life.

      I liked my tiny nickle plated Jennings .380 but damned crazy murderous junkies broke in and stole it...
      It had flip up/dpwn safety...

    Enjoyed the Video and your collection. I bought a 'Bryco 59' .380 in 1994 and the smaller Ladies Version for my wife. Our Friday night date was Dinner followed by some time at the Gun Range, then back home to break them down and clean our weapons. I've never had a FTE and I never had a FTF until my gun sat for 20 years without being fired.
    I broke it down, polished the feed ramp with some 1000 grit sand paper, cleaned and oiled it... and no FTF problems since. My Gun is stamped Bryco 59 .380 Auto on one side and Jennings Firearms by Bryco Arms, Irvine CA USA. It may not be the best quality handgun however, if you polish the feed ramp, keep them clean and oiled... they make a good night stand gun.

    I remember being a kid and all of my aunt's at the family functions carrying these. My grandma and all of her friends had them. A few of my older uncle's kept them in the car.
    I remember seeing more Jennings Saturday night specials than any other gun. My dad had a few thrown in with his knife collection.
    Now, you can't find these things anymore. I wish I could have lived during the days of 80$ handguns. It's all a piece of gun history now.

    Thanks for the trip down memory lane! That was my first handgun circa about 1983/4. An ex-girlfriend made off with it and I wish I still had it. As long as I put Stingers and the like in it, it shot every round, and reasonably straight.

    Interesting. I bought mine new in Teflon black. It is a Chino type originally with (fragile) checkered grips. It has the later type grooved grips on now. Even though the safety iis different between Bryco and Chino the new grips work well. I drilled a 1/16" hole in the butt and sunk pins in the frame to provide an additional anchor point for the grips. No problems.

    The reason for the Calwestco markings was part of the shell company game Bruce played when he was afraid that he would lose his licence to manufacture firearms because of a potential felony spousal abuse charge after the POS broke his wife's jaw, Christmas 84. He waited out the heat and set up Bryco in NV and when it died down, Bryco came back and took over Calwestco. That one extra stamping was about all there was to Calwestoco. Bruce was finally taken in in 2013 for distribution of child porn.

    I love having a piece of history! I got a phoenix arms hp22a just to have it 😂 I think I payed under $200 for it brand new. I take it out to my backyard every now and then to plink through some old soda cans. Unexpectedly, it’s been one of the more reliable firearms that I have…? Somehow? It functions so well and I’ve only had ONE feeding issue through at least 1k rounds. Didn’t expect that at all considering how cheaply it’s made!

    i was able to buy an original raven cal.25 here in the Philippines sometime in the early 1990's and i regret having sold it due to some money problems back then. I surely would like to buy it back again if only i could find the person who bought it from the gunshop where i sold it 😟i am now 62 and i feel this raven cal.25 is the most suitable & shootable for my hand.

    as for amo i heard that cci stingers or maxi mags work best in these as they provide more pressure to operate the slide. with the exception of the modern Phoenix arms which work best with standard amo.

    I will testify, I fired an old model of the j22 just a few months ago that I bought off a guy as a pawn for $50. after it was mine, i realized why he didnt want it back. One day firing, I was target shooting with the neat little gun, and the plastic piece in the back that held the firing pin and the slide, Flew out towards my eye and nearly blinded me. Wish that I had done more research than I did before hand.
    This is a true story.

    Actually I was surprised too that my HP22A was made in Ontario! Who knew there had been a factory in Costa Mesa though? That's cool.
    It's really sad seeing those guns and realizing how much free-er the nation was. No waiting period and no background check. I love Saturday Night Specials, what a cool collection! I dig the history, and was glad to buy an HP22a to support them a little.

    Bought a Phoenix in .25 caliber as a curiosity at a gun show. Two magazines! Of course one of the magazines had a spring compressed about halfway up the housing and made it impossible to load more than 3 rounds. After about 2-3 times at the range, the finish wore off and the slide spring lost so much tension that it failed to strip a cartridge from the magazine.
    Believe it or not, I emailed the company, had my FFL mail it to them and instead of repair, they sent me another new gun back! My guess is these were so cheap to manufacture that they still made money on them...

    I recently picked up a Jennings J-22 by Calwestco (Chino, CA, USA), in the nickel finish with wood grips, switch safety, and the serial number (51xxxx) stamped on the backstrap. After watching your video, it seems like it fits between some of the models you have in your collection, with the different location of the serial number and safety selector. I've been trying to put an approximate year to it. Any thoughts?

    Interesting video as I own one of these, but either they started making the new type of vertical safety slide while still at Chino, CA factory or they were using left over pre-stamped parts at the new factory, because my J-22 looks exactly like 3:00 position wood grip pistols in your video, and it is marked Calwestco Chino CA, but it has the up and down safety slide, not the sideways slide that you mentioned came along when they changed factories.

    Hey, I once had a 100 year old M1907 Dreyse pistol that I would NEVER recommend for anyone but a masochistic master gunsmith to disassemble.
    That piece, sometimes referred to as a "disassembly" button is a weak point in all guns of this design. I've seen MAB pistols where a similar piece, slides out of its press fitting on the frame. The slamming of slide and compression of firing pin spring tends to overstress this area.This is observed not only in Jennings, but all guns of similar design.

      Some call it "The Swashbuckler" . The "Swashbuckler" stamp adds to the gun's cool factor,especially in chrome.

      +Plymouth roadrunner I actually don't have as many as him but I have three and two are not worth the money and the 22lr shot fine after taking apart and polishing the hell out of the slide.

    Trying to figure out how to take the slide off for cleaning... my father gave me one

    • @GunWebsites
      @GunWebsites  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      watch a video of it to be more clear
      once it is not loaded (empty) push in on the rear of the slide, that key-way looking part will push in, once it moves forward enough to clear the channel it rides in, the whole slide will raise from the frame as two parts

    which one is the most reliable?

    • @GunWebsites
      @GunWebsites  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      prolly the old one

    • @negolfman
      @negolfman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      25’s a little more reliable than 22’s. Old ones very stable, Once new JA’s have about 200 or 300 rounds their more reliable if cleaned and lubed often, make sure you use High velocity non hp or match grade ammunition, a slightly polished ejector on the barrel and feed ramp increase reliability, until mags are more stable to clear the round or feed ramp angles changed.

    they are cool, but made of Stainless Steel, and much better made than these
    But somehow they are still labeled a "Sat Nite Spl" (mainly because gun haters can't be bothered to know anything about guns)
    I want to get one, but since they are nicer than these they cost as much as 'normal' guns so it might be a while till I find one at a low enough price to add one to the collection
