    Just back from my 11th trip to Japan I also noticed things have changed (even compared to last autumn!) Tiredness of tourists was clear, many more not well behaving travellers unfortunately. I absorb local manners like a mushroom and do my best to adjust, respect and learn as I love Japan and all my Japanese friends so much. Every traveller should read a book titled ”The dos donts in Japan”. Of course I understand that I belong to the ever growing number of tourists as well and it makes me even sadder.
    Thank you Nathan for all your always topical, valuable tips, vast and versatile knowledge plus overall very pleasant manner of presenting things.
    I used sakura mobile for the first time now (on your recommendation and using your link). Everything worked immaculately! I’ll never travel to Japan without an e-simcard again! 😍🙏♥️🇯🇵♥️🌸🌸🌸

      aww thanks for such kind words. It makes me so happy when people have successful trip but you having travelled 11 times can probably give me many tips and hints!! Thanks for being part of the growing community of respectful, Japan loving tourists.. not all tourists are negative and I'm glad that we also have good tourists too!

    I travel to Japan annually for work and enjoy visiting this beautiful country, but 2024 was unlike any previous year. The influencers and TikTok crowd were atrocious and blocked busy streets and train stations; tourists from several nationalities were treating the country like a theme park and the locals like subservient employees. For the first time ever, I also saw American-owned chains advertising American political movements in their stores in Tokyo, something that you just don’t do in Japanese society regardless of your personal beliefs. I hope the country takes steps to protect itself from overtourism as well as to remain Japanese.

    • @Jenny_Berry3
      @Jenny_Berry3 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      That sounds horrible. I saw a lot of Tiktokers and youtubers blocking many areas because they were stressed about not getting the correct photo due to the crowds. It's terrible what Americans are doing to Japan.

    • @spun_01
      @spun_01 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Jenny_Berry3 In my personal experience recently, yes the TikTok/Instagram/Whatever "Influencer" crowd was more noticeable than previously, but these individuals were not responsible for the worst of the behaviour I saw. In fact, the few Americans that I met (I'm Australian) were great to speak to, and all that I spoke with were very respectful of their surroundings.
      In my experience, the greatest transgressions among the visitors that I witnessed all came from one particular country, and in my experience those in tour groups following the little flags through the crowds were the worst behaved. As @onehorseopensleigh said, treating the country like a selfie-stick Disneyland which was there for their amusement.

      To be fair,... America fire-bombed Japan so tourists are very tame don't you think? ... the Kishida LDP government will continue to increase tourism so these things will only get worse.

  • @spun_01
    @spun_01 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    This ever increasing influx of tourists to Japan is good for their economy and anyone with stores profiting from the tourist trade, but I feel so sorry for the majority of Japanese people who are helpless to watch as their way of life is changing so rapidly. I know a few families from Kyoto from back in my high school student exchange days, and to hear some of their stories breaks my heart. (And before anyone points it out, I love Japan as much as anyone else here, so as a fellow tourist I know I'm part of the problem).
    It is seemingly easy for tourists to forget they are visiting a place where people live and work, and when visiting Japan now you don't need to look far to see someone disrespecting or ignoring the accepted etiquette/guidelines (phones on trains, pushing and cutting queues, being rude to staff, going where they aren't supposed to), or just generally being ignorant of their surroundings and the other people around them.
    Great video again Nathan. I love these bite-sized summaries of Japan news. Makes it very easy to stay up to date.

      hmmm,... it seems increased tourism makes things more expensive and intolerable for native Japanese ... I hate this and some of my relatives just want all foreigners out of Japan. hmmm,... in Bakamatsu days, foreigners were killed for simply being in Japan ...

  • @shawnbell6392
    @shawnbell6392 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    Good video. I support the ESTA. I am very concerned about over tourism and the stated goals of the current government may not hold up in reality and the Japanese people should weigh in with their vote in upcoming elections. Now more than ever tourist behavior is everyone's business and bad behavior needs to be directly discouraged by all. Its a long way to fly without people doing their research about the culture and not intending to act like adults. I hope to see Japan ban foreigners from open alcohol in public and "influencers" are very predatory. Japan is something special and merits respect.

    I am Japanese. There are areas of Japan, especially in urban areas such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, that are adversely affected by excessive numbers of foreign tourists. However, there are many minor cities and regions that are rarely visited by foreign tourists.
    If possible, avoid Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto and visit regions such as Kyushu, Tohoku, and Shikoku.

    What makes me sad is that some places were really packed due to tourists when i visited japan last autumn and numbers are expected to rise a lot more. It is such a beautiful country with lovely people and beautiful architecture and nature and i eally want to go back. But seeing that for example Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto or Kyoto in general was so full of tourists, i'm really afraid of Japan at some point getting upset wih tourists plus tourism and the industry behind it slowly taking it its identity. So lets hope that the japanese government doesn't only see the money to be made from tourism and creates some limits where possible

    • @NinjaMonkeyguy
      @NinjaMonkeyguy  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's always a balancing act between preserving the beauty of a place and managing the impact of tourism. Hopefully, Japan finds the right balance to protect its identity and hopefully the infrastructure can keep up.

    I'm not familiar with ESTA systems at all. I assume that not every country will have to use these as Japan is targeting 'the usual suspects' and Westerners are the least of their concern.
    I imagine that it's not just the seats on rides that are smaller in Japan. Japanese people on average are smaller and the contents of shops reflect that.
    I imagine some Japanese people may find that they do not meet height limits on rides in the West and may find buying clothes in Western countries difficult.

    • @NinjaMonkeyguy
      @NinjaMonkeyguy  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If they are modeling it on the US ESTA system then everyone apart from their residents will need to use it. and interesting thought about height restrictions and clothes in western countries mmm

    Thank you for the video, Chief.
    Japan needs to change their 2 year holiday visa age restrictions. 30 is too young for people in these times. They need to extend it to 40/45 like Australia has. They're really holding themselves back with this, especially with their decline in population.
    It is good, though, that they're declaring more job roles as skilled work. Like lorry drivers. Just a shame they're slow to implement these changes.

    • @NinjaMonkeyguy
      @NinjaMonkeyguy  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @Swickedy
      @Swickedy 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @NinjaMonkeyguy the old dilemma of young verses capable 😅
      Japan moves slow, so maybe it would be better to do a recap of the visas later on, how or if they're actually being implemented? 🤷‍♂️ especially as the requirements for all industries with these visas is an N2 in JLPT.

    As usual you jam packed this video with information. Much I didn't know of or hadn't realized were in or nearly coming in to effect. I find it funny that governments and airlines view raising airfare for a myriad of reasons as sustainable. The just a little more to save the planet (however, government bureaucrats, leaders don't pay these fees their tax payers do. They also fly multiple planes part full to not inconvenience these important people, saving the planet not considered.), security fees increased, landing fees increased, tourist fees increased, etc. All of this is fine till the customers stop flying. Airlines reduce service or cease to fly. Tourism decreases causing revenue losses to both public and private sectors. Tourism as we know it is really only existed for less than thirty years, before that it was only the super wealthily who travelled on a regular basis. I fear that this centuries norm may return.
