You bet ya Ronnie...His humour is still as good today...I bet you've already seen it but there's a film with Steve McQueen and Bob Newhart made in 1962 called 'Hell is for Heroes'...Great film and the film makers give Newhart a spot in it where he is a US soldier in a small group (with McQueen) and he has to use the radio to give the Germans the impression that there are a lot more US soldiers where they are...It's a brilliant film anyway but Newhart comes into his own in that scene...I uploaded a few different Newhart sound bites on my channel with this one so check them out...Thanks for the comment and...Have fun Ron!...

I'm English and don't normally appreciate American humout but, when I first heard this particular story by Bob Newhart, my husband and I laughed so much we cried. We even bought an LP of his and listened to all that was on it. This was around 40 years ago and, even though I've heard some of these before, they still make me laugh. Thank you so much for sharing. :0)

One of my fondest memories is sitting with my mother and father at a Bob Newhart appearance in the mid-'80s. After he finished and walked off stage, people yelled for more. He came back out and performed this.

I used to listen to this with my dad as he had an LP of Bob Newhart. I was 12 years old and this sketch even at that young age made me laugh each time I heard it. Comedy was one of the few things my dad and I had in common. We also loved Woody Allen's Night Club Years and I still listen to them now.

I've just turned 69 myself, and agree with everything you say. Unfortunately, I started smoking before I heard of BH. But I fully realized the dangers smoking by the time I was 19 and never smoked since.

My sister was 10 years older than I was had chain smoked since she was 13 years old. As Brother Dave Garner who was a popular comedian of that time said, I’d smoke chains if I could light them. When I would go to visit her some times we would stay up visiting nearly all night and she would finish one cigarette 🚬 after another. I only ever saw more than 3 or 4 pictures
of her that she didn’t have a
cigarette 🚬 in her hand. She died of lung cancer before she was 65 years old. I never smoked at all. I’m now 79 years old and still kicking 🦵🏻 but I sure do miss my big sister. Sometimes I just want to talk to her so badly that it hurts. We had such good times together. I lost my husband after only 10 years of marriage. He was 37 years old and died from a glioblastoma cancer. I got 2 daughters and a son out of the marriage and I live with my oldest daughter and her husband. 👵🏻👵🏻👵🏻

I remember as a child (growing up in Central Africa) the local TV station started broadcasting the Bob Newhart show. Although I was only 10 or 11 years old at the time, I thoroughly enjoyed his dry, unobtrusive humour. His timing was impeccable, and his management of comedic situation has seldom been met - never mind surpassed - by other popular comedians. No matter how many times you listen to this little masterpiece, you can't help but chuckle... the true test of comedic perfection.

I heard this once, maybe 48 years ago, and I still remember some of the stronger punchlines. Bob made comedy for thinking people. His delivery was incremental, to give people time to picture the situation he was describing, and to understand the absurdities.

He wrote a book that I read. It was “I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This. The two funniest thing’s he said that he had to get dressed in the dark so he wouldn’t wake up his wife. He said, Did you ever try to tell the difference between a pair of black socks or navy blue socks in the dark? The other thing was when the first time she got pregnant they decided not to tell anyone about it at first and she agreed. He said that the first thing she did was get on the phone and screamed, Guess what!!! I’m pregnant. So by the time she got off from the conversation there might have been a telephone operator in Timbuktu that didn’t know their little “secret”.

There is a guy who posted a message on here who seems very angry with people who are offended by the prolific use of foul language and that this person seems to equate that while we disaprove of language used in this form, that we are in approval of people using illicit drugs.
I used to wprk in Corrections. I have seen the after-effects of people who have chosen to take these substances and what happens to them afterwards. With them committing such terrible acts and deeds, which they had previously stated to themselves that they would never do.
If I was to hazard a guess, I would say that this guy with his mouth in the gutter/toilet not only speaks like this in his everyday vernacular, but also engages in the use of illicit substances, then, calls everybody on here hypocrites.
I'm not saying that I have never sworn before. I have. Particularly, if I kick my toe in the middle of the night. But, my spoken vocabulary is not every word that comes out of my mouth like his style of conversation.

I only listened to this once, but where's the racist part?

    • @simonkehoe2676

TheeCaptainAmerica There is no racist part at all! It’s a parody on our use of foreign goods. Today they are used and people are addicted to them. Tobacco, sugar and Coffee! Products were imported that had addiction properties. So the Market was sustainable. Just the same as A class drugs. However the Elite control Coffee, Sugar and tobacco markets and invaded countries and forced people into slavery.

I'm guessing you don't even have a clue who Sir Walter Raleigh was, do you? No? Thought not. You don't even seem to realise he was executed 395 years ago -- and yet you still refer to him in the present tense.

Hey, Egleton. This was meant as a joke. To imply that tobacco had not been introduced into modern day society. And that, for the purpose of the joke, that Raleigh was still alive today. It seems that everyone else here gets this except you. Newhart is a comedian. Please try and understand that he was just telling a joke. Sheeeesh!
