I think the funniest part of the sketch is how by-the-book and micro-managing the boss at the other end seems to be, making sure the broom is signed out the next day and completely disconnected from the gravity of the situation.
Bob pretty much invented this style, half the act is implied , thats brilliant. and he always does stuff without being blue and with perfect timing and cadence. nobody has done more with a pause than Mr Newhart. Fantastic stuff
First time I heard this skit was over 30 years ago when I was working part time as a guard in college. I was roaring with laughter and when one of my supervisors was doing the 'right by the book' bit, I couldn't keep back a snicker. Bob Newhart is going to be missed. His comedy is classic, gets you laughing without being profane or gross.
Was listening to this on an Australian internal Qantas flight. I had never heard it before and I was just cracking up laughing so loud, many heads were turning in my direction. This is brilliant!
First, who are the 30 people giving a thumbs down? Anyway, this guy is funny, be it stand up, sitcom, or while being interviewed on a talk show. I remember him on the Carson show telling about a routine that bombed early in his career. The story of how it bombed was still a gut splitting story.
Bob performed this style brilliantly in a WWII movie with McQueen, Coburn, Bobby Darin and a host of others as Driscoll a HQ typist who happens to get lost while driving a jeep up near the front lines and finds himself right in the middle of the shooting. The GI's are outnumbered but find that their pill box was bugged by the Germans so they get Driscoll to conduct fictitous radio chatter to bluff the Germans. Hell Is For Hero's - 1962
I'm not sure if I was even born around the time he made the comedy standup, and don't know anything about Bob Newhart. Well I was born in 1992, and just listening to this I know it is golden and classic comedy.

A long while back, you could record straight from the internet by just using the sound recorder that is standard in any Windows version without a mike or anything, so I recorded a lot of stuff off the original AOL Radio. This was one of my favorites of things I recorded and still listen to it on a regular basis! Now I've got that program that lets you download TH-cam videos to your computer, so I decided it was about time I added to my collection. Best investment I've ever made since you can download them as either MP4s or MP3s (or both if you so desire)! Now I can save things like this as an audio file that I can put on my cell phone for when I'm waiting for a bus or just walking to the store. It's amazing what good company Mr. Newhart, Allan Sherman and others like them are and how listening makes your errands seem to go so much faster. :-)
Very inventive comedian. He paints very funny images through simple narrative. I can't think of any current so called comedian who can do it as well. Long may he keep going
