"Hacia la oscuridad" by Ivan Garcia-Garcia

  • I have my doubts regarding what name to give this composition and I am curious about what this could make people feel and imagine.
Personally I was thinking about giving it a somber title in Spanish, something similar to what I did in "Entre la neblina". Because I will probably create a small set of pieces about death and I will iclude both of said works.
I also want to give this piece a little story, so feel free to rant about whatever scenes it makes you think about, let me know is you have any suggestions.
I decided to dedicate this composition to my friend Julian Rohmann, who died a year ago due to cancer. I believe the piece depicts the emotions of a person who knows that an unavoidable grim future awaits him, it's like a man knowing he will pass away soon.
The composition process I had with this miniature was quite interesting. One day I sat down to play the piano and the textural idea came to my mind, and from that moment I started working on it in and out through several days. Even though it is just 2 minutes long (32 measures) it has taken me 12-13 hours of work to craft it. I don't know if this be because I'm not at my best moment as a composer or because the texture is a bit out of my comfort zone.
I wanted to say that this recording isn't the one I would have liked to use, but ufortunately my personal piano isn't as reliable as it used to be and I live next to a road, so it is very tedious for me to get good recordings of my music. And my gran piano is still not tuned lol.
I quote Scriabin's Op.37 No.1 at the end of the piece. I also took some inspiration from Schubert's Andantino and somehow this movement is very similar to the second movement of Schubert's D.960 too, which wasn't intentional.
Feel free to make a small donation through my ko-fi: ko-fi.com/ivan...
All my compositions and content is public and free. I always prioritize music over money, so a tip would be greatly appreciated.

“The Fata Morgana Bell”. It evokes imagery of a bell tower standing alone in a desert, ringing for only starving travellers. They travel towards the sound to find it was merely an illusion; the turning of the gears and the ringing bell were the sonorous call of vultures, and the tower was merely a mirage.
    Beautiful piece. Kudos.

"Las ventanas del Muerte". It's a somber habanera-style lyrical piece from what I can gather, so it mostly works with good somber names, and a bit of mistery.

Hola Ivan. Saludos

Very good piece, well done. Forgive me for the cliche, but it evokes a feeling of walking a trail alone, thinking about the gloom of life. I definitely get a foreboding darkness feeling from it. I would call it “Paseo Frio” (cold walk). I have never named a single piece I have made, putting labels on things is not what I do in general, but especially music because I find it restricting. It is hard for me to think of titles, hopefully my idea was interesting.

Something classic like "Piano etude №4". The way we remember great pieces is not by a title trying to impose a meaning, but by the feeling we have experienced with them. That's the beauty of musical composers - that they are not writers! Congratulations on the beautiful and moving piece, and thank you for the work you do!

Thank you very much. Good point, it is true that composers aren't writers. Although I wanted to do something similar to what I did with my other piece, create a small story around those pieces and one or two more I will add. 3-4 pieces about death and write a coherent story that connects them.

The haunting simplicity of a cantabile melody in thirds floating above an unadorned ostinato creates a grieving procession to the final rest, with closing chords like funeral bells. Great to see you compose more! I think that the title 'Life' would really fit this piece. Initially it starts as the beginning of life, everything is smooth and fine, even though with some sadness in it. Then from 0:45 it is as if life goes on, the person becomes an adult, and life becomes more chaotic and with more struggles and problems, up until 1:15, when most of those problems and struggles are mostly over and fixed. From then onward, it is as if the person has become old, presumably towards its end, and becomes a little bit peaceful and relaxed like at the beginning. However, this end also carries a lot of sorrow and melancholic feelings with the end. Really great composition
