Mycareer is garbage because of the long ass non skipable cutscenes, the cringy story characters, lack of emotion, and most importantly there’s no draft.

I absolutely hated having to walk/run everywhere. If I wanted to get a haircut, I had to spend several minutes running to the barber shop. I want to change my shoes? I have to run back to my loft. I want to get to the park? I gotta run clear to the other side of the map to get there... Pathetic. Not to mention the ridiculous micro transactions, the broken servers, the worst storyline in gaming history, as you said NO DRAFT... Just pathetic. Yeah I'll admit, I liked picking my team for once... But the draft and the buildup to it was always exciting. At least give us an option to pick the team that drafts us (something I've been asking for for over 5 years now).
Patrick Kendrick the only reason I play 2k18 now is because of MyTeam and that’s at best like 2 games a week. MyCareer becomes easy once you become a starter, so easy in fact that in my rookie year I won MVP, defensive player of the year, Rookie of the Year, Most Improved Player of the year, won the championship and Finals MVP with the clippers, who’s best scorer besides me was DeAndre Jordan with a whopping 9,7 ppg. I’ve never broken the 100 point mark when playing MyCareer. As for the Draft, the reason why it’s better than picking your team is because you get to see your results by seeing what teams want to draft you and at what number.

Another annoying thing about 2k18 is that when you pick a team a team in Online mode, and your opponent pick the SAME EXACT TEAM, 2k doesn’t let you change or leave the match. Like wtf?

If you go onto the network on ps4 and disconnect the internet that way and don't close the game, sometimes it doesn't register a loss or a win it thinks you didn't play but didn't leave

Remember they really regressed with the create-a-player feature? you could do face sculpting anymore? that was one of the biggest issues that plagued 2k18 when it first came out and now it seems like this is going to go down as one of the worst 2k games to ever be released. major step back. the only mode i play is myleague mode but everything is pretty much the same with that mode too.

Air Vigs 2K16 was trash. Its the reason I haven't bought a 2K since. To many instances of the game cheating not just the rules of basketball but the laws of physics. HoF AI cheese like legal goaltending, fouling you on dunks to make you miss em, just running into the ball to cause "strips". If that wasn't bad enough you can lock up those zig zag isos just to have the guy dribble THRU you. People steal the ball or block you by putting their hands THRU you. Its inexcusable and unacceptable. Id put up with stuff like that since 2K13 but the legacy issues have just compounded every year since. Its just to much now.
here are my main reasons why 2k is so freaking frustrating to play:
- 2K GREED: for a full price title, the game feels soooo greedy. when I pay for a game, I don’t do in game purchases. ever! call me old-school, but not gonna happen. so I take the path of grinding. this year they made it impossible tho. I got 450h in this game but I am so far from 99 (1x 91 pg, 1x 89 sf), I accepted long ago that I’m not gonna make it. The cut scenes/story are pure advertisement, that’s why they are impossible to skip. I got alooooot vc banked up and would like to try out other archetypes, but the thought of having to sit through all the commercials again is too much for me.
- POINT MULTIPLICATOR: the fact, that the game is rewarding you to play on lowest difficulty is one of the most frustrating things to go through in 2k18. I don’t even want to write about it. Took all joy from the game. Plus, I developed bad habits, like gambling for steals, crazy passing...
- AI and LAYUPS: On highest difficulty the AI hits ridiculous shots, when me and my teammates can’t make open layups?? Teammate shot selection is so bad, you are forced to do everything for them.
I wasted a lot of time on the simulating-games-for-vc-bug and playing on lowest difficulty just to get some vc/credits. If 2k don’t realize they are pushing players to do stupid shit I won’t be a customer any more. Would be such a pity, because I really love the game itself.

Personally, I'd like to see a third party company come out with something to complete with 2k and EA. Those two have dominated the sports game industry for how many years now. There's almost no point for them to try anything new and innovative because they know that people are going to still buy the product, and if they're competitive enough, they'll buy all the little micro transactions to make their player the best.

The sim engine is why I stopped playing. There is no reason why when I’m trying to tank and I have a roster of 60 overall players that I end up making the playoffs, or when I have Kyrie Larry bird and Shaq on the same time that we should go 42 - 40.
I sometimes make expansion teams and always make the fucking playoffs, but when i have a star surrounded by defence and shooters i get nothing.. wtf???

Most people who buy 2k arent NBA superfans who just hop into myleague and want to have fun with the 90 teams in Play Now. A lot of them are kids (12-17) who are looking to play an easily accessible mode. 2k this year is not accessible without the use of a credit card, so hopes of the main consumer base actually being active on the game is asinine.
Lol MyLeague got it's flaws to. Tell me how a damn expansion team won 43 games, took a game from the Warriors, 8th-12th pick always gets into the top 3, the number one projected pick always falls down, teams choking 3-0 leads, 2k not raising young players shot tendencies throughout the year making them average players in 6-7 years, being able to trade a 12th pick in the draft for the 1st pick, being able to easily finnese teams, all stars chosen on popularity of players rather than skill ( Kyrie averaged 19 points, gets starter, D Lo averaged 23 points, gets benched ), a center always winning DPOY because of rebounds and blocks, a player averaging 3 more points and winning MVP, 8-6 seeds upsetting teams in round 1, players like Conley, Kemba, Whiteside, etc getting traded for a 1-5 pick everytime make sense. MyLeague is still fun but it's sim engine is trash.
Not gonna disagree with you there, all of those observations are definitely right. Every time I start a new Myleague it seems as if the 99th percentile outcome always happens. (basically everything you described). The facts is that superfans hop in there to boost the sim engine and have some fun with random experiments. I guess a good part about it is that the player can change the sliders so that the game makes more sense, contrarian to MyCareer or Park or MyTeam or MyGM. It has the most range as a game mode, it can be a substitute MyCareer, it can be used as a "Create A Legend", it can be used as an online fantasy league, or even a substitute MyTeam if you work really hard on it. It's not great by any means, but still is objectively the best game mode that 2k produced this year.

Sam's a Stan i won 23 championships with an expansion team in 2k17 the game mode is frustratingly boring. The only thing they changed this year was cap hold and renounce rights which usually makes me have 6 guys on a roster after FA. The offline modes arent even fun its incredible how bad this game is lol
I feel like I can never get on the Park without friends. I think that there should be parks for different level players, like a park for only 60-69 overalls then one with 70-79 overalls and so on. Then you can have a park where you can play with friends no matter your rating. I feel like this would be a good way to get more people playing the game bc I feel like the only people that are allowed on the parks are the guys that are 90+ overall

Scrap the park entirely and have a matchmaking system. Match you with players 5-10 ratings within you. Maybe even add a ranking system based on your average teammate grade as well. For Gran Turismo Sport the system works wonders to keep the game competitive.
I.E: An 85 overall with a B- teammate grade gets matched up with an 88 overall with a B+ teammate grade, and an 82 overall with a B teammate grade.
I don't play 2k.. so I don't know why I love watching these 2k anylsis videos... this and everything Dbrown does.

MyGM is also terrible. The piss poor attempt (I don't even want to call it a "story", then spend 1/3 of the time talking about fucking gourmet food) and the game-breaking draft class that you CAN NOT remove, with 2 players completely destroying the league for the next 15 years, so you have to draft one, and every player over 75 overall will quit the team if they aren't starting, even if Jesus Christ is starting in his position.
Along with it basically not changing from the previous 2 years and terrible myleague sim engine it has, its complete dogshit. There's not even an option to have a MyGM without the story! Why isn't that an option!!

It was just a giant cash grab. More then any 2k I can think of this was the most heavily ridiculed VC game ever. Literally everything you do requires VC and they think spamming you to buy micro transactions is gonna do justice when you’re already begged to preorder and to buy the more expensive versions. Reasons why Fortnite are so successful is the exact reason 2k has not been this year. It’s all about the business model
You do realize that you're comparing a game that's based off of a real life licensed commodity and a completely fictional game meant simply for entertainment and to generate revenue. Fortnite has a bigger audience because it is just a "video game" you have to enjoy bball in some way shape or form to even consider spending your time or money on 2K. There in lies the difference, yes 2K makes a ton of money on pre-order packages and vc based micro transactions but at it's core the game is still titled "NBA" 2K18.
It is an NBA game before it is the playground, mycareer (which is nothing more than a RPG type mode for those that don't really care what goes on around the rest of the league) or myteam. Any and all video games are going to have a micro transaction element to it from here on out, most devs are all embracing the possibilities of "games as service" models so might as well be prepared to either boycott or spend the extra money.
They need to stop deleting game modes and bring back gamemodes from 2k11 and 2k13. I especially want 2k to bring back Creating a Legend because that was alot of people's favorite mode. Please bring back Creating a Legend. Please. 🙏
Agreed. Honestly, if 2k could find some way to blend the best parts from 2k11, 12, and 13, I would definitely buy it. Unfortunately, VC has ruined 2k. I still play 2k13 on PC, and sometimes 2k12 (I was lucky to track down a copy of 2k12 for PC from Australia. I'm too lazy to bust out my PS3 to play 2k12 again).

I want techs and injuries. I know it sounds so weird but this would make the game so immersive and much more realistic. I remember in 2K16 my player got a hamstring injury in game 7 of the Easter Conference Finals that actually made me mad upset and you could relate to how the player felt. Also Technical fouls would add so much more to the game and shows a character true energy like in 2K16 you could get techs for swearing annoying but made the game realistic.

I stopped playing 2k because of the player progression system in mycarreer because it took a lot of time to get some vc so you could improve your player. When they first introduced the gym and all those things to improve your player I thought it would be great because the grind would be the go-to way to improve your player. Instead, what we got was a system in which you needed to buy vc to be able to improve your player. I know many people grinded hard and got their players to 99 ovr, but many people like the game but don't have the time to grind that much to improve their players to an average overall.

2K16 was the last game I played consistently. It was genuinely fun. The shot meter was better than the current one. MyCareer wasn't as much of a grind. Considering the amount of people who still played 16 even a year after it came out, it's been the best 2K for current gen. 2K19 needs to be more like 2K16.

16's biggest problem was probably the fact that you had to wait a lot before you could truly start the MyCareer (bad story and the high school/college/8 games in the 1st year).

Offline modes are my go to. I love myleague especially. These modes are too bland and there isnt anything interesting to them. I think it would be cool to do a myleague that focuses a lot more on the players and what they are doing. Imagine seeing articles come out for players in myleague. Maybe a hot young rookie coming out who gets an article of how he has a lot of potential in the league. Also media should be more interactive with the players on your team. Reports asking your players questions and them responding differently due to their personality badges they have equipped. Based on the way that they respond you could see media begin to develop stories and narratives based off of them. I think that the myleague should be it's own basketball universe that is different each time you play and one that evolves and interacts with itself. That would keep it fresh as you try to build your team up and see different reactions from the people who evaluate and interact with them.

In 18 you go up to an 85 (that’s not even an 85) with 200,000
I made a pure sharp today and to upgrade my 3 from a 76 to a 77 I had to pay 2,500 vc and that’s not including the fact that a hoodie that used to be around 500 is now 1000 and I’m not even a high enough overall for a pair of pants yet

I wish they bring a new mode of a simplified my career like they had a few years ago. Start off with either a draft combine game or at most 5 college games, then just start playing in the NBA after being drafted. I didn’t play this year because there were too many animations before you can even start the game, the neighborhood was not fun for me I just wanted to play, everything is so complicated right now.

In MyTeam in the beginning of the year they made one promo a week with boxes that cost 50 dollars, and the only good cards were maybe a ruby + the collection reward (and not always), and that's basically it ... i'm a budget player in myteam, so i don't care that much, but in other years, i sometimes spent some money here and there. This year, i just did not, i quit in october. I bought Madden 3 weeks before NBA2k18, thinking I would quit Madden when 2k would come. But i played 2k for a month or so and then just came back to Madden...

S L the only problem I have with timing layups is that the meter rarely shows up at all, and I never feel any type of vibration. So, you basically have to guess when's the best time to release, and due to the piss poor latency on all online modes, you're gonna be wrong almost every time.
And the worst part, if you don't even time it or just hold it down forever, you'll still make it 70% of the time. So, what's the point of having to time layups when most of the time, you don't even have to? It's a stupid feature, just make layups miss due to contest in front of the player, not timing.

You be able to earn VC, so when you finally get the internet you want have to start at a 60.

Another thing, if no one is at the court you should be able to play the computer in pick up games, worth 1/2 points per win & loses.

HERE’s the PROBLEM : My first 2k was 2k8 ... Aight game, but sports video game developers were still figuring basics out at the time - movement/physics were rigid... by 2k11 (with Jordan on the cover) things were getting pretty great. Innovative modes & improving graphics + animations became a yearly thing from 2k11-15. What you have today, is a game that’s so muddied down trying to be realistic, that it ends up ruining the whole cake. Beyond 2k’s lazy af “developers” who seem like they only work on the game while piss drunk... the game has moved from more of an arcade style where you could master certain teams & moves & strategies and two evenly skilled challengers could face off for some dramatic moments... to some form of dysfunctional utopian socialist 2k meant to be hyper real, but crippled as an enjoyable game by the very realism it seeks to (and also fails) to achieve.

I’m as much a stat head an realist strategy type guy as the dudes developing these sports games... but my intelligence & strive for accuracy is also what allows me to see what I tend to crave in my video game entertainment... we don’t want advanced algorithms guiding the flow of the game towards an accurate simulation of a 3+ hour NBA game. No! We just want great graphics (which have been like a 9 or 10-10 for years now), and believable gameplay where the true stars make the jaw dropping moves we watch them for... where the physics are mostly believable & where many steps have been taken to ensure that boneheaded random chance turnovers & glitches are minimized - and careless amateur passes are punished. We don’t want 100% real ... we want the excitement of the game at the palms of our hands.
All I would do back in the day is play online VS matchups. Straight up. I’d build records like 1k wins & 250 losses every year. I’d learn different teams and enjoy the creativity it took to learn how to master each superstar’s style... and when you’d face another good player it was fun & maddening to learn how they used their creativity to master some role player or below average ball squad and try & learn how they found out how to stonewall you on D or get buckets with the most unexpected homies. It used to be all about developing your style of play and authoring your own beautiful ways to victory, or crushing defeat... now with these past 2-3 2k’s the life has been sucked out... it seems the only real way to win is by playing who can be the most patient & not blow their cool and take risks with a jumper off the dribble or a contested dunk/layup. It’s all about who can play the most boring in order to give themselves a cold hearted advantage of probability within the odds of 2k’s software.
It all really boils down to the fact that 5 years ago, it felt like you were controlling the game, from your brain to your nerves, to your fingertips to the screen and back again to through your eyes. It felt like you were reading and reacting. You were the player. You were in the game. It may be technically a more realistic game now... but all that really means is it feels like the players are running around in a swimming pool under water with their restricted movements and & physical flow ... all in the name of realism, which for some reason is what 2k assumes they should be aiming for without even questioning. It seems like the path from your intended action in the game, to that intention becoming a reality through your controller and into the game, it seems that path has become far more distant and indirect than it was 5 years ago. It feels like you’re playing in 3rd person instead of 1st person if that makes sense, like, like it’s like your in the back seat ya know?

- I've always hated the speed the game runs at on Park and ProAm it feels slowed down.
And why can't I shoot mid/3s like a pro and still ball handle and dunk/layup like the best of them, I always play an all around mode that can do it all. but this year your so weak depending on the roll you choose.
Fortnite got most of 2k's fanbase in my opinion because it's *free,* and the things you can purchase with the in-game currency *don't effect the gameplay beyond the visual aspect.*

One other thing that nobody seemed to have noticed was the screening animations. You can skim the screener, and your players will go right through and give the shooter a free 3 pointer every time. The animations have gotten better in previous years to prevent this, but it's still blatantly obvious online.
The game sucks because they got rid of the rep system and made some dumb overall system and then they decided to make the grind even harder than last year

One of the worst things in the game, in my opinion, are the putback layup/shots from the computer. A big man will grab a rebound 10-13 feet away from the basket and shoot it while they are still in the air. That’s not a thing that happens in real life unless there’s no time left and they are trying to win the game. It takes the extra possession away from the player because of something they have no control over.

My primary complaint is and has been the fact that if you miss your shot timing by even a fraction of a second, you miss.
You can be in the arena, alone, 10 feet away, and get a 98% 'good' timing, and 9 times out of 10 you will miss the shot. Regardless of your stats.
What about the franchise mode? Not only do you have to go through a specific story line where you don't have much control but you have to replay the story every time you pick a new team and start over.

You could've elaborated on the defense collapsing. I've seen this in MyCareer and MyGM where my guys will literally sag off on somebody after I purposely pressured them. It's like 2K drags my players away from somebody so the CPU can make a bunch of corner 3s. It's honestly one of the most frustrating and inexcusable glitches of the game. Corner 3s are a silent killer in this game, it's like the defense doesn't know that the baseline even exists.
Another thing I hate is when I’m shooting free throws and get a “good” release with a pretty good free throw shooter and they consistently miss them. It’s like every time i shoot a free throw I’m just praying it goes in.

2k basically pulled a Mass effect. They had a good product in previous 2k games that needed small improvements. But instead of actually listening to the user they jumped on the money train I can understand it from a business perspective but they sacrificed the quality of the game. I'm personally done with games who focus on the online and the micro transactions part because they all seem to do the same thing lower ye quality of the game. People are starting to see it for what it is. Look Horizon Witcher 3 and god of war these games are top tier games make a lot of money but are good quality.
The main thing I hated with the MyPlayground mode is when you're trying to join a lobby with your friends, even if you guys are in a squad, if you walk around enough, you or your friends may all end up in different lobbies. Hell it may take about 10 tries just to join the same lobby as your friends. I eventually gave up. I still play pro-am from time to time but that's about it.
There's also that weird animation glitch where you're driving down the baseline with some somebody guarding you, you have the step ahead of them, but for some reason out of nowhere you're facing the fans and you're two seconds away from a turnover.

You forgot my biggest issue with nba2K18 : the my GM mode (which is btw the quickest way to farm VC). This scripted stupid my GM was so awful that no matter which team you pick, your team end up with being sold twice, being asked to engage vince carter "to raise the value of the team" (yeah ... like 2018 warriors need him) and having a forced exchange to get some random guy for practically nothing (sorry montrezl harrell you are not worth draymond green). You also need to battle for 3 pregenerated uber draft rookies (which turns out to be curry, jordan and shaq in the making) and the sad thing is... you can get them, you can even get to the point where you combo them for an all time 13 years dominion in team with fresh high value rookies (76ers...).
In fact this myGM featured only one major gameplay improvement, the possibility to automatise training regime instead of having dumb event like "we train too hard" into "we don't train hard enough" coming from the same player a week later (and ignoring it giving you penalties... of course...). Appart from new 2018 ruleset (especially for contract reconduction) they wanted to add into the game the J-leagues contract... problem... players aren't treated as playing when sent to J-league : no xp => no improvement => salary wasted. worst : they can't even use hardcore training (I once found a diamond in rough with 99 native potential but 60 ish base stat... he only downgraded despite J-league nice one 2K18)
I know that myGM is far from being the most popular mode, but in the end, there was no need to polute it with unskipable story (and draft class) and story driven decisions. That's what made me stop playing...
Farming VC in My GM mode must work only on consoles. I have it for PC and no mode allows you earn vc to go towards your player in mycareer mode.
That's why I stopped playing as well. Like the knicks are ever going to leave ny? Lol. When I did one with the pacers, they traded a young guy for a trash veteran that ruined my franchise. Should have been patched out to skip it.

Completely agree with everything Dom said, I tried very hard to enjoy this game and it was a huge letdown in the end. Played my career as long as I could before all the repetitive features got old, general gameplay felt clunky and bugged at certain points making it more frustrating than fun. Also the fact that this game was a major attempt to cashgrab through microtransactions was so blatant that it was discouraging to know the only way to get your player to 99 was to grind 24/7 or pay for more VC. The game has no rewards for skill, you don't even earn VC based on what difficulty you play on so there was no difference between playing on Hall of Fame or pro other than how sensitive the shot meter was. Honestly I found myself wanting to play games like fortnite instead when I realized how disappointed I was in 2k, the game I've bought consecutively for the past 5 years. I can say for a fact that I will be waiting at least until Christmas time to decide whether the next 2k is worth my money or time and just maybe the devs for NBA live are working hard to pick up the slack and make a decent game that will give 2k a run for it's money.

You should make a part 2 bc there’s plenty of issues that u overlooked. Player Creation is unusable now bc they made it dependable on head presets, driving in traffic is undoable bc u get stripped every time, All Time Teams are missing key players (Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley, Rasheed Wallace, Moses Malone, etc.), legend teams are unplayable bc 1/2 the team is generic players, and the classic courts from the 50s-70s have 3 point lines, even though they didn’t have them irl.

On the lay-ups issue, at least in my experience, I have to say that they are very makeable. Yes, it sucks that they don't have a meter... but if you think about it, lay-ups are very different from shots. Shots depend on timing but contested lay-ups rely on the ability of the slasher to avoid the oponent's hands. In 2KU it tells you that you have to move either the left or right analog stick while doing the lay-up to indicate where do you want to finish it.
I remember in NBA 2k12, the shooting sleeves and accessories were free. In NBA 2k13, I had to pay a small amount of VC. I'm a casual 2k Player, play every now and then and I had a white shirt with brown pants in MyPark. Now it seems that they're getting too greedy with it. That's my opinion.

Also, i’ve noticed early into this game while playing on MyTeam Domination and MyCarrer, there is a glitch where if you are beating a CPU by a substantial amount the game will automatically say “network connection error” during the fourth quarter where the game doesn’t count when I legitimately defeat the CPU. This was very infuriating while trying to grind out Domination and MyCarrer Games. I stopped playing after it happened several times.
The thing I hate the most about mycareer is that you have to become a 91 for on court coach badge, which allows you to call plays and call for the ball and get it ASAP. My problem is, by the time your 91 most if not all badges are maxed out. It’s kinda pointless to me. I feel you should get that at 88 overall. Usually when most players hit 91 and get that badge, it’s badges like glue hands and free throw ace left.
