I’m new to miniature painting, so I’m sorry if this is a bit of a silly question, but why do you do the Russ grey brush at 3:28 if the back is going to be covered by the black Templar? It seems like that effect wouldn’t show through. Btw thanks so much for your video, I’m going to be trying this painting style because I tried painting normal mouths and eyes and it was such a pain for me lol
thanks for watching! A couple reasons for that. The main reason is that I needed to highlight the skin anyway, and since I was already drybrushing the model, I figured I might as well drybrush the scales too. Even though the highlight is subtle, it does influence the Black Templar that's layered above it.
In all honesty though, I was kind of developing this color scheme on the fly. I had a rough idea in my head but I only had one model, so I didn't have the means to do a trial run. In hindsight I could omit that drybrush step because it does seem a little redundant.
Watching this has caused me to not only want to play Seraphon, but has boosted some confidence in painting the army. Thank you!
that is great to hear! I'm really glad it was helpful to you. Good luck with your painting!
Sir, you are definitly the *Bob Ross* of mini painting!
Excellent work on the mini and on the video.
Thanks for watching! Never thought I'd be compared to Bob but that is quite an honor. Thank you!
Yes! I have thought this before.
So cool. The glowing effect is amazing and seems begginer friendly. Bravo
Thank you! Glad to hear that. Easy and beginner friendly is my goal here. Thanks for watching!
This has quickly become my favourite painting channel, keep up the great work Matt!
Thank you so much!
I know everyone is talking about that glow effect, but I am particularly impressed with how you blended the chest. Blending contrast paints to get smooth transitions that look good is pretty tricky, but you made it look easy. I don't think it *is* that easy, and you just made it *look* easy, but either way I'm still impressed and I'm gonna give that method a shot.
Thank you! Blending can be tricky, and there is a bit of a knack to it, but in time it will get easy for you too. Good luck!
You have casually dropped the best seraphon scheme I've seen to date.
This is super helpful for the space marines I’m painting. The dark krakens are supposed to have glow-in-the-dark tattoos on their armor and I’ve been looking for a tutorial forever!
sounds really cool! I'm glad this worked out for you. Good luck with your army!
This is EXACTLY what I've been waiting for ever since I saw this scheme in the new Seraphon box! No one else seems to have it!
Awesome! I hope you enjoy it
What paints would you use to switch off the blue with green?
@@mogorva80 for the glowing effect? Or the skin?
@@MattsHobbyHourboth, to reach the same scheme just with green :).
@@mogorva80 for the glow I think Warp Lightning mixed with Contrast Medium would look pretty good, maybe one part paint to three parts medium. For the skin I'd use the same recipe as my other Saurus guide. Good luck!
That effect looks gorgeous.
thanks for watching!
After almost 3 weeks I just got back to an area with internet and this was an amazing thing to see uploaded. Thanks for making it!
That's really cool to hear. Thanks for watching!
You know its great when I now want to collect a seraphon army purely based of this tutorial!Great video ❤
They sure are fun to paint. Thanks for watching!
I love your method because ive been trying to nail that starborn look for awhile. This really helped me and I now am happy with blending the chest area.
Awesome! I'm glad to hear it worked out for you. Thanks for watching!
These are remarkable results! I would be over the moon to see your take on Skaven
Thanks! I uploaded a Verminlord last week, and next week I'll have a Clanrat video. Hope you can check them out!
Never seen glowing lizards before. Very cool.
Me neither! First time for everything. Thanks for watching!
Awesome job again, you'r tubes are a joy to watch. Looking forward to your next video, would love it if you would try something like feisty warrior dwarves.
Great suggestion! Thanks for watching!
Dude, very happy whit your work. The music and your voice make the video so easy and relaxing. Thanks, I will aply some of your techniques
Thank you! I'm really glad to hear that. Good luck with your painting!
I'd love to see your take on the Slann Starmaster with orange, red and yellow tones, like you mentioned in a previous comment
that would be a lot of fun to paint!
good work man! You're like a Bob Ross of Miniature painting!
Thanks for watching!
Well done! I will be trying some of these techniques with my color scheme!
Awesome, good luck with your army. Thanks for watching!
Love the look on the shield.
thanks!
I love the finished model and there's something about your style and explanation that makes me feel like I could easily paint this myself. I'm thinking about starting a Saurian Starhost army from One Page Rules and they would look amazing like this. Thanks for making this
Thanks for watching! Good luck with your army!
That’s a really great looking scheme and it looks very quick and simple to do. Thanks for the video!
Glad you like it, and thanks for watching!
I have been looking for a guide to do exactly this for some time. Thank you for the inspiration :) Easiest sub of my life.
Thanks for watching and for subscribing! Good luck with your army!
This is exactly what I was looking for, amazing video.
awesome! Thanks for watching!
Not using this tutorial for Saurus Warriors, but I do have a kitbashing idea for an Oldblood that I'm totally using this for
Sounds great! Good luck with your kitbashing project!
Love your methods and choice of colours! Can't wait to test it myself
Thanks for watching, and good luck with your projects!
amazing, I will definitely use this for my army!
Thanks for watching and good luck with your army!
Maaaaan this is awesome! Will try it on my new stormcasts!
sounds cool! Good luck and thanks for watching!
Fantastic! Great video!
Thank you!
Nice paint job, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
This is awesome! I may borrow and adapt this for my nids. Keep it up!
I bet it would look great on Tyranids. Thanks for watching!
Now this is soooooo cool.
Quelle beauté, merci pour tes précieux conseils!
I love the gold!! Gonna save that for later
Awesome, glad you like it! Thanks for watching!
Just incredible. Wish i could do that with speeds...
Thanks for watching! Speed comes with time, just keep at it, and you'll get there!
Awesome video! Will be using this!
Thanks for watching, and good luck!
Thank you!@@MattsHobbyHour
Amazing job! Can you pleeaaaase do a video on the regulae turquoise scheme? Been putting off my Seraphon army box for months
Thank you! Unfortunately I've run out of Saurus! If I track down some more I'll do one.
Great tutorial Matt.
Thanks Ian!
Also amazing work. Keep up the good work man
Thank you so much, I'll keep it up!
Another excellent video! Keep em coming.
Thanks, will do!
Very good piece and video 📹
Thanks for watching!
You are very welcome and see it as enjoyable
Definitly going to try this on my Serephon boys.
Awesome, good luck!
My god that glow effect
I am going to try to modify this with a yellow glow, to get an effect like the Lambent from Gears of War.
sounds awesome! Please let me know how it works out for you. Good luck!
Don't think I've seen much people getting a lot of results with the Ultramarine Blue Contrast paint.
Good job.
Yeah it's a different kind of color, like a blue grey, so it's not good for ultramarines which is why I think a lot of people don't use it. Thanks for watching!
Hello there ! Thank you for the tutorial, I love it !
I have questions though: how would you deal with the rest of the army ? Specifically, mounts: I feel like doing them the same colour as the saurus/Skink would be weird, so what colours would you use to get a similar "Starborn effect" and still be different ? And would you do all the dinosaurs with the same scheme, or have a different scheme per specie ?
If anyone has ideas, I'm all ears (well, all eyes here) !
That's a really great question! I dont know anything about their lore, so I'm not much help in that area. But aesthetically I really like the look of a variety of colors in the army, especially in the different beasts/mounts/monsters. If they're different species, they can look completely different. So personally I would go with complimentary colors, and go with a warmer color palette; red, orange, yellow, etc. I'd save the blue glow for Saurus and heroes only.
do you have a list of all the paints? beginner here loved the vid
Yes they are all listed in the description. Thanks for watching!
Any tips to be more precise with a paint brush?@@MattsHobbyHour
Also last question is it possible to paint the normal small skins the same ways as the saurus warriors@@MattsHobbyHour
@@Kinginazur that's a great idea for a future video! Kind of hard to describe without visuals. My tip would be to establish anchor points with your fingers and hands. Take a look at how I (and other painters) brace fingers against the model and against the other hand. Brace your wrists against the edge of the table. The more anchor points you have, the more steady the brush will be. Good luck!
@@Kinginazur yep I bet they would look great in this color scheme!
How would this look like on a Termagant as if you did a xenomoroh color skin and scale armor and having a green glow effect?
I bet it would look cool!
interesting tutorial, thanks :)
That was not exactly what i seek, I think i will go with a more purple glow, but it gave ideas ^^
a purple glow would look very cool! Thanks for watching!
Would grey seer or mechanicus standard be a better primer
If you are dry brushing white over the top, then I'd spray with Mechanicus. Alternatively you could spray with Grey Seer, skip the white drybrush stage, and go straight to painting a few white highlights on the chest. Good luck!
How would you paint the seraphon dinosaur mounts to match this color scheme?
That's a great question! I'm not well-versed in Seraphon lore, so maybe someone can help out there. Would the mounts have the same glowing effect as the riders? As far as general art aesthetics, I think something light, mainly with reds and oranges would look cool, and compliment the dark blues and black.
Any tips on how you would do this effect with the green color scheme?
I bet Hexwraith Flame would look really cool for a glowing effect instead of Aethermatic Blue.
I really want to adapt this but with reds instead of blues, but would that work?
Only one way to find out! Sounds really cool. Good luck!
If I wanted to do this in red instead of blue (going for a molten/lava look), what do you think would be good replacements for the colors you used?
lava would be cool! I'd probably start with something similar to this Aggradon th-cam.com/video/7YZYDcJf4Kg/w-d-xo.html and then go darker on the scales with a couple black washes. For a molten glow, i'd line white in the cracks and then paint in some Iyanden Yellow. Hope this helps and good luck! Please share your results if you try it!
Nice tutorial. I started a seraphon army and wanna paint with this scheme color, but i have one problem. Could you tell me a color equivalent to the russ in the vallejo game color or model color? Thanks
Thanks for watching! Steel Grey or Sombre Grey would be pretty close, according to the new color chart. I have an old bottle of Sombre Grey and it's just a tiny bit darker than Russ Grey. I'm not sure how the new formulation is, but probably really close. Good luck!
@@MattsHobbyHour
Do you have instagram? I would like to show you how the miniature turned out
@@Chomito90 yes I do, there is a link in my bio here.
real question minus the glowing eyes, could this be used on Saurus for Warhammer Fantasy?
Absolutely!
@MattsHobbyHour ive been looking for a contrast scheme thats close to the original lizardmen scheme. Trying to re create the army i had a teen. But damn those new Saurus sculpts look good other then the shield lol
@@sigmatus303 I have a Skink video that will go live in a few hours, you might find it useful. It's very similar to the old blue color scheme.
@@MattsHobbyHour i saw im keeping an eye on it lol
You made the white painting part look waayyy to easy - my paint keeps going well outside the cracks between scales so there's just white sitting on top of the scales since the contrast blue won't settle over it and they look super clumsy, I'm struggling...any advice for how to refine this part?
How much are you diluting the paint? If its flowing too far away from where you're painting, it means your paint is too runny and/or the brush is overloaded. Try using a little less water, and try wiping a little bit more paint off the brush on to your palette, before painting the model. Hope this helps and good luck! Let me know if it works for you or if we need to try some more troubleshooting.
@@MattsHobbyHour oh no I wasn't diluting the white at all...how much water should I aim for?
@@Ellarian891 I just reread your post and I think it's more clear to me now. Is your brush sharp enough? That may be the problem, and not dilution. If the brush doesn't have a real fine point you're bound to get some spillover on to the scales. You could try making some corrections by mixing a dark grey color and touch up the scales as needed, leaving the white in the cracks.
@@MattsHobbyHour I've got a citadel artificer layer brush, I might just be bad with fine motor control haha, will try and correct with some dark grey to cover up my mistakes. Just to confirm, were you using diluted Vallejo white for the mouth/shoulder glow?
@@Ellarian891 yep Vallejo game color "dead white". Yeah it may just be the brush control, but that will keep getting better with time. No harm in making corrections with the other color, it happens to all of us. A little back and forth between colors is sometimes necessary to get crisp details. Good luck!
Do you think this would work with Kroxigor scales instead of Ultramarines blue?
I think it would work alright. Ultramarines Blue has a little bit of opaque pigment in it (the stuff that settles to the bottom of the pot), and opaque pigments make the coat end up smoother. I'd try mixing a touch of something into the Kroxigor Scales, like Russ Grey or a turquoise paint. Experiment and try out a couple tests on scrap pieces to see what works best for you. Good luck!
Little late to the party, but do you mean mixing the two or making a blend? Reason for asking is because I was wondering the same thing regarding kroxigor scales 😅@@MattsHobbyHour
@@JeanDoeShow I'm only making an educated guess here, but I don't think it would make a great substitute. Kroxigor Scales is weaker and more transparent, and Ultramarines Blue is much stronger and more opaque. I developed the scheme based on Ultramarines Blue and it is really dependent on the opaque properties of it. I think you could mix a little Kroxigor Scales into it if you wanted to adjust the color, but I wouldn't replace it entirely.
I'd say do some experimenting and see what kind of results you get. Good luck!
@@MattsHobbyHour Thanks for the advice! Might actually try mixing them up and see the results. Still, love the colour scheme you did, so might just go that route. 😅
did you thin out Apothecary White with contrast medium? mine is more grey than white.
Nope I used it straight from the pot. What is too grey? Do you mean the paint itself, or the model looks too grey after painting the apothecary white layer? If the model looks too dark that means your basecoat is too dark, you might want to highlight or drybrush it with an opaque white paint first before applying contrast. Hope this helps and good luck!
@@MattsHobbyHour yes! it's too grey after apothecary white, i'll try a more opaque white. thank you!
Great job, really. Thanks for this usefull video. Bye
Do you think I'd be able to use this scheme for my tyranids army?
Yeah absolutely. I think it would look really cool on Tyranids!
Do you always use ace spray paint ? And do you ever use an airbrush to base coat ?
I'm always looking for better spray paint. Right now I like Ace. Their grey is smoother than just about anything else I've tried. Yes I use an airbrush pretty frequently, especially for Space Marines. Sometimes I will airbrush the white part of a zenithal spray. An airbrush has better control compared to a spray can, so I often like to airbrush the zenithal undercoat on heroes and centerpieces, and use cans on the troops.
Excellent content for the Lizard boys
Thanks for watching!
Do you ever seal your minis ? If so how?
Yes I do, usually with Testors Dullcote
Doesn't Black Templar obliterate all work you have done with ultramarine blue scales + drybrushing ?
Not entirely, although it's a subtle difference and harder to see on camera than in person. Black Templar is semi transparent, so the blue and drybrushed highlights show through a little bit. It's subtle though, and in hindsight I'd probably approach the scheme differently and do some fine-tuning.
Il try it. I will inecitably fail. I will try again
Keep trying and practicing, and you'll succeed. Good luck!
💯
Brother I could kiss you! I've been looking for a good guide on a blackish blue color scheme that I could use for this daemon army I'm making and yours is the exact aesthetic I'm going for!
I'm glad you found it helpful! Good luck with your army!
i like the end result but i have no idea why you would triple drybrush this, the first 2 drybrushes dont do anything anymore
Thanks for watching! Glad you like the end result.
