Basically, Nen can live on and become stronger after the user's death. If the troupe killed the chain user, Kurapika could retaliate and kill the boss since he is defenseless right now.

So basically to dumb it down, it's like being hunted by a ghost, with nen. There's more to its mechanics of course, but that's the gist.
      It's extremely simple.

That's the thing, everyone in this show is morally grey. If you can sympathize with the "villains" then that means that they were written well, they are not one dimensional, they are multifaceted and therefore they feel real.
Okay so explaining what Phinks said: Nen that's powered by powerful emotions like grief, anger, and hatred can become way more powerful and determined after death, meaning had Kurapika died, his Nen would have probably automatically killed Chrollo.
Also Hisoka has standards he doesn't find joy in killing indiscriminately, he enjoys fighting and killing but _only_ powerful people.

Here's the explanation to what they were confused about at the end, like so they can see. Also this comment is edited since I got my explanation slightly wrong, and so I need to avoid confusion.
So the answer is, no they cant go after Kurapika now because of what happened to Chrollo. If they kill Kurapika the nen of Kurapika's chain will kill Chrollo. The way Kurapika's nen works is by casting the chain onto a persons heart with a preset condition that will remain there unless removed by Kurapika himself, or someone else with some sort of nen remover ability. Although this isnt really explained this far into the series, and is technically maybe kind of a spoiler, it is a fact that Nen can remain after death. The hate the phantom troupe was speaking of is imbued in the Nen cast on Chrollo by Kurapika, but wont actively attack him because of the condition. If Kurapika dies, the hate in his Nen and the nen itself will live on, and will actively attempt to kill Chrollo despite the condition placed on the Nen. Kurapikas chains isnt affecting anyone else in anyway, so the other troupe members are safe. They now just know they cant talk to Chrollo, or he'll die, and they cant kill Kurapika because that will kill Chrollo.
My bad again to everyone, I technically gave you guys that read the pre edited version the wrong explanation. I kind of forgot that despite being life force Nen doesnt really die with the caster, which youll learn more about later. I believe thats all that was wrong with the explanation so there you go.

      NO no no no no...
The concept of Nen-after-death does not require any prerequisites such as a specific command / condition to "activate." It has nothing to do with Kurapika's chains, but rather the "residual Nen" born of his strong emotions. In this case being hatred. Theoretically, even if Kurapika didn't have his chains wrapped around Chrollo's heart, if he died, his hatred could very well linger and attack the Troupe members responsible. Just like what happened to a certain character, from a certain arc, later in this series. That's nen-after death 101.
The problem that Phinks pointed out is the fact that Chrollo can't use Nen to defend himself, which could overwhelm him. That's the only part where Kurapika's chains actually played a big role here. This is the only reason why the Troupe can't kill him. Otherwise they'd hunt him down.
      Long story short,
The Troupe can't kill Kurapika because Chrollo can't use Nen to shield himself from overwhelming hatred, not because his "chains" will activate if he dies. It's already activated lol. It's purpose is preventing Chrollo from using Nen and communicating. Again, the hatred is what kills, not the chains.

Understandbly, hxh anime viewers always ended up liking the troupe, because the massacre that they did upon the kurta is not explained in detail..
In the manga, it was explained that the troupe tortured the kurtas while they are all alive until they cried blood and changed their eye color to red. Only then were their eyes gouged and then killed. It was gruesome and inhumane. Rob is right, the troupe are still inhumane villains that cares about each other.

  • @Zarola
    @Zarola 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

When I first saw this episode Pakunoda's ending surprised me a lot. I had a "feel" burst if you will.
Hisoka was acting as a troupe member to get to the boss. He only wants to fight strong people and Chrollo's Nen is sealed now. He can easily kill Chrollo at this point so the fight is a ridiculous notion. He would kill Chrollo as easily as he did that ring of gangsters in the First Phase of the Hunter Exam.
Pakunoda wants the prophecy to end with her as she was the first predicted to die from Chrollo's use of Neon's Lovely Ghostwriter ability. She would then be followed by Shizuku and Shalnark. The interesting thing is she got the idea from Hisoka. Hisoka tells her on the airship that his fortune was wrong about the fight he was going to have with Chrollo. He went through with calling in Illumi based on his original fortune but the prediction had been promised has been affected by the interference of Hisoka and Gon (in a way). Therefore she decides to give them the information. If they understand Kurapika's abilities, the consequence of killing him, Gon and Killua's goodwill, etc they can negate the other fortunes of death as well. Thus leaving hers and Chrollo's to be the only ones that have been fulfilled to their entirety.
It just moved me so much the first time I saw it.

In the first chapter in the manga, Kite says a good hunter is loved by animals. The scene with Pakunoda and the cat is longer in the manga and 1999 version of the anime. It was supposed to hint that Pakunoda was a good person overall. The Phantom Troupe is just their own faction in the grey world of HunterxHunter.

Most of the characters have done both good and bad deeds. Even the main characters have been "evil" by certain view points. It just depends on whose side people are on...they all have their own thoughts, feelings, and goals.

For anyone who questions the Spiders' morality, this is an account of the Kurta massacre from the manga:
"The news of the Kurta clan's massacre was reported throughout the world 6 weeks later. The news at the time was reported like this: The discovery was made by a female traveler who got lost in the woods. All 128 villagers had been killed. Family members had been forced to sit facing each other and they had been stabbed but were still alive before being beheaded.
The pureblood members of the Kurta clan all had their eyes gouged out. Those from outside who married into the clan kept their eyes, but their bodies showed considerably more injury (the adult men had many injuries as well, but this was surely evidence of resisting the enemy before being captured). From this, it is hypothesized that the culprits first attacked the clansmen from outside to agitate the pureblood Kurta clansmen whose eyes would then turn red from grief and anger. They were then beheaded one by one.
It is said that the Kurta's scarlet eyes that arise from anger are the most brilliant shade of red and command quite a price on the black market. There were many merciless wounds on the bodies of the children as well, and it is thought that the culprits did this to incite the eyes of their parents to turn a more brilliant shade of red.
Near the bodies of the massacred, a messaged believed to be from the culprits was found: We reject no one, so take nothing from us."

They are really interesting characters and what makes them terrifying to me is that there's a part of me that genuinely enjoys them together, even though they committed mass genocide leading to an entire culture of people becoming near extinct. The fact that the writer can play with that dynamic and make the audience empathize with them is one of the reasons this show stands head and shoulders above its peers. However, I totally agree with Rob in the discussion, the phantom troupe, no matter how likeable they are they're all tapped.

Remember that they are the outcast of society and that’s their only home they have had, so they follow because they want to be part of the spider and be part of that home that accepted them. I was kinda dissapointed that they didnt fight at the end, because I expected Hisoka,Gon,Killua, Kurapika and Leorio were gonna fight the troupe, but its all good as the ending was different and unique from other animes as it wasnt as cliche bc u would expect them to fight but they didnt because Kurapika has nice friends so he chooses friendship over revenge and the girl named Pakunda(Correct me am wrong) she was influenced by Gon and Killua because she asked them why dont you guys run away, I am injured and you can run away and still kill the boss, but Gon and Killua said we dont like violence and we hope to solve this in a peaceful way by exchanging, which influenced Pakunda as she was trying to save the spider and keep it alive so she returned Gon and Killua and went back to their hideout, the troupe didnt see the boss with her so they were about to start a fight between the phantom troupe but they didnt because pakunda passed on her memories to 6 troupe members and sacrficed her self, hence the troupe didnt fight bc they saw her memories with Gon and Killua and how they influenced her not to kill but solve it in a peaceful and pacifist way and they didnt want pakunda death to be meaningless so the spider still lived, the boss lost his Nen but is still alive and Kurapika is now more merciful towards the troupe as he has good friends now, I was dissapointed that they didnt fight the at the end but its good because they solved the problem in a different way from other animes and shows that the troupe have a heart and care about the members and they still lived it added sense of realism instead of normal generic villains where they dont care and go off fighting the heroes and they couldnt fight because if they did fight the chain user the boss would die and it would make Pakunda's death meaningless so they didnt fight.

They can't kill kurapika because nen can become stronger after the death of its user. So if they kill kurapika, the nen can become stronger around Chrollo's heart and since he can't use nen to protect himself the chain can kill him. Their is a higher chance for nen to get stronger after death, if the dying user has a serious grudge after death, which kurapika sure as fuck would lol. If the chain gets stronger after death, it might not be possible to have it removed with the exception of a certain spoiler character. So they can't kill kurapika without risking losing Chrollo for good.

People want to consider the Troupe pure evil for such an act, yet is it not the world that was evil? The fact that the Kurta eyes were viewed as such an expensive treasure, that nobody cared about the deaths and happily bought up all the eyes as common trophies. How the eyes continued to circle the world going for outrageous bids. It is simply the fact that the Kurta secluded themselves that no one cared for the outcome. And even more so, how do we know that the Kurta clan is innocent? The Kurta viewed the whole world as enemies before encountering the Phantom Troupe, and Uvogin said the Kurta were powerful. He wishes to chain the buyers and troupe to hell, yet doesn't realize he would be trapped with all of them in hell when he dies as well. In the most simple terms they are saying they can not kill the chain user because if they kill the chain user than their boss will die. Their boss will die because he currently us unable to use nen. What Kurapika put on their boss is not as simple as if they kill Kurapika it goes away. If they kill Kurapika than his hatred towards the phantom troupe will still attack the boss even after they kill Kurapika in the form of Kurapika's nen that is chained to their boss. The key is that the boss cannot use nen, that is why he would die if they were to do that. So they have to wait until their boss figures out a way to get his nen back, or if he were to just die. They have not forgiven Kurapika though, they basically just have to wait until either their boss gets nen back some way or if he just dies. They basically have a cease fire for the time being until one of those two things happen.

Kurapika's Nen chain is wrapped around Chrollo's heart and is preventing Chrollo from using Nen.
If Kurapika dies, that chain could become even stronger because of Kurapika's hatred.
And since Chrollo can't use Nen because of the chain, He is vulnerable to Nen.
Remember when Wing first showed Gon and Killua Nen? How he shattered a wall just by touching it?
How Wing told them they couldn't survive Nen unless they learn to defend against it?
"Its like you are walking through a blizzard you can't see, and are wondering why it is so cold"
Metaphorically speaking it is as if Kaprika stole Chrollos winter coat, and that if Krapika dies a torrential blizzard will strike Chrollo.
THATS why they can't kill Kuraprika. No one else in the Troupe is effected by Kurapika's Nen.
    EDIT:
If the scale is Good, Center, Bad
Then I think the Phantom Troupe is halfway between Center and Bad.

What Rob does not understand is that they are not the typical villains that you find in the different series of this one. They are a group, a family, THEY ARE BAD but it is not that they do it for yes and already.
The same applies to the Killua Family or himself, they are KILLERS who work for money, they are bad from an ethical point of view but it is their job.
Later they will also understand why HxH Antagonists are the most "realistic" ones in the anime.

you still didn't disprove his point tho. they are bad people.the killua's Family is also evil. its as simple as that.them not being"typical villains that you find in the different series" doesn't make them any less evil. stop trying to sugar coat it.

I gotta be honest I love these discussions. It just shows how good the show is. If it's trash you don't even think about it twice. If a show can rile you up it's good.

The troupe is a group of drifters and bandits. They have a simple philosophy that feitan reiterates multiple times which is “we’re bandits. If we want something we just take it” so they are just total badasses that look for comrades that are like minded. I feel like this makes them some of the most human criminal organizations in anime. But by no means are they what we would consider ethical

Nah, If Hisoka doesn't deem you as a threat or a problem, he will just kill you (in the manga he killed innocent people just because he can). The only people Hisoka spares are people that are strong or have the potential to fight him to the battle of death.
He is like an evil Goku when you think about it, but he wouldn't spare his opponent or let them heal since he is almost always bloodlusted. Lol.

What Phinks is saying is that Since Chrollo no longer has Nen in him the after-effects(powered by Kurapika's hatred) for killing Kurapika would be passed onto Chrollo which would immediately die because he has no protection to Nen like Uvogin when he was captured by Kurapika.

Somehow, Rob and everyone missed the flashbacks of young Chrollo living in trash, Meteor City. The Troupe is from a very very very very very very poor place where ppl treated them like trash.
Phantom Troupe are like thugs from the hood who learned life thru pain and not having anything and watching ppl die (and them themselves starving and fighting to live) trying to survive. They made it out of the hood but unfortunately, the way the hood raised them taught them that they needed to take and kill to get what they want. I won't spoil you but it is for a cause. Doesn't make it right but you can understand where they are coming from.
Also, Frieza...was on Planet Namek and he's aPIRATE sent their to take over the planet... EVERYONE ON NAMEK KNEW WHO FRIEZA WAS and they were ALL TERRIFIED. Frieza didn't have to wild out because everyone was afraid.... Frieza is a typical villain (maybe there's deeper something to him) but he is always wildin whether it's thru his ppl or him because he wants to take over.

    • @mapleunix1
      @mapleunix1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Uhh, there's nothing to spoil, there is no cause, and no matter the cause, even if the means to reach their end is killing, it's clear that they get joy out of killing, and do it even when they don't need too. This makes them objectively evil and their actions indefensible. You try to paint it as if just being from Meteor City makes you a sociopathic asshole, when it's clear that people like Canary prove otherwise.

@@mapleunix1 The Troupe is their own faction and much like the hunters they seek their own gain. Since the people of Meteor City are treated like scum, they are hardened to the rest of society and wish to do as they please. Since social status, money, and fame doesn’t interest them; I’m quite sure most of there profits return to Meteor City to help improve the lives of the rest of the outcast. Just as they also return to defend Meteor City if it is in danger, and why the Mafia bounties on their heads get rescinded. (The Mafia needs Meteor City’s support, so hunting the Troupe is out of the question.) The Phantom Troupe are Heroes to Meteor City.

@@riatanina All of that is neither here nor there. Rob's point was that whatever traits make them good don't make up for the fact that they're morally deprived deviants who take pleasure and pride in the murder of innocents, and he's absolutely right. Look, if they just murdered mafia people, then who cares? But they clearly go after innocents such as the Kurta, which is indefensible.

    • @riatanina
      @riatanina 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@mapleunix1 The Kurta clan were also outcasts, viewing the outside world as evil and crazy, hiding away in their secluded village. As Meteor City is open to the idea of taking from everyone (aka viewing all as equal opportunities) of course the Troupe would have no problem with eliminating the village for their own gain. Kurapika was a young child when his people where wiped out. Kurapika didn’t know his clans history, even he thought going through all those trials to leave was odd. In short, there isn’t enough information on the Kurta to view them as good or bad.
If anything Kurapika is cursed for not dying with the rest of his clan. Doomed to kill in cold blood; seeking the revenge that will ultimately lead to his death. Kurapika joins the Mafia, also considered an evil organization, with the goal of getting close to those who collect eyes so he can slaughter them and reclaim the eyes themselves. (At least that is what he believed back when he first joined in the mansion, before he started to care for friends.) He wishes to chain the buyers and troupe to hell, yet doesn’t realize he would be trapped with all of them in hell when he dies as well. And as the Kurta view the world as evil, Kurapika was ready to kill Melody in cold blood when they first talked together.
Kurapika could have became a hunter, got a respectable job in one of the categories (to earn enough money to buy most of the eyes), pay his respects to his people, and settle down to revive his clan and keep themselves secret. Then when he would have died at an older age, he would at least get to see his clan again. (Cause he isn’t going to his clan anymore…that’s for sure.)

@@riatanina Jesus Christ, first of all, in your first comment you mentioned how you're "quite sure most of there profits return to Meteor City to help improve the lives of the rest of the outcast", and I didn't even call you out on how that's pure speculation, but now you claim that "how do we know that the Kurta clan is innocent?", when there's been no hint in the story to suggest otherwise. They viewed the world as enemies because they literally are, as essentially you said yourself, because they keep being hunted for their eyes. The Kurta being powerful says nothing of their morality.
Also, your second paragraph is irrelevant to the point at hand, which is that the Troupe is evil and their actions unjustifiable. Why are you trying to argue otherwise when it's just plain as day? lol
Also also, Kurapika is just taking it upon himself to hunt a band of murderous thieves at the expense of his own life. He is not killing for killing's sake, he visually and verbally is shown to abhor the associated violence, and he puts his friends before his lust for vengeance, so the characters are not comparable.

    Short explanation about the end:
Nen lasts after death, So kurapika his nen could last after death, due to the amount of hatred he has harnesses towards the spider.
The troupe's worry, is that if they kill kurapika, that his hatred nen will grow after death and thus kill their boss.
Keeping it as spoiler free as possible, this is just based on what he told killua and gon at the end.
