The modern AR has been called Lego for adults. Ian at Forgotten Weapons did a video last week on the issues around shotgun shells and semi autos. It was information I had not seen before.
To demonstrate the lack of recoil of our M16a1s we were using in army basic training (1984) a range instructor mag dumped a 30 round magazine downrange in front of us with the butt against his crotch. It was an effective demonstration to say the least.

I'm kinda going the opposite route for home defense. Originally I had a Mossberg Maverick 88 12 gauge pump shotgun for home defense. Then I got into AR-15's and switched to them for home defense. But now I'm discovering semi-auto shotguns and I'm now testing out a Tokarev Titan 12 gauge right now for reliability. So far 170 rounds in of buckshot, birdshot, and slugs and it's been surprisingly reliable. I also was amazed at how fast I could do rapid and accurate target transitions. But I'm now buying a Tokarev TBP12 bullpup because of the excellent reviews on it and because it's more suited for home defense due to its compact nature and larger magazine capacity. I plan on running 200 rounds through it of against mixed birdshot, buckshot, and slugs. If it's 100% reliable with at least 80 rounds of my favorite brand of #4 buckshot (out of the 200 I'll test), then it's replacing my AR-15 as my primary home defense long gun. If it's not...well then it'll just be a fun range toy as they are undeniably a ton of fun to blast. Oh BTW, the trick with flashlights on a shotgun: use a small pistol flashlight in a spot that you can turn it on with your support hand. The lighter weight makes it less likely to fall off the shotgun or yank your mount off of the shotgun.
@@chrisallot66 Nice! If I could afford one of those Tavor shotguns I'd definitely get one. But yeah AR-15's are no doubt effective for home defense. But one downside is that without a suppressor, they are VERY loud. Much louder than a 9mm PCC or a shotgun. Plus as you said, 12 gauge buckshot is simply unrivaled in close range lethality. I personally like using #4 buckshot because it spreads a little more, creates more wound channels (27 pellets), and has much less over-penetration compared to 00 buckshot.
I was going to roast you about how a semi auto shotgun is 5x the cost of a psa-15. But holy hell! $320 for an ar/bullpup shotgun?!?! That is amazing! You win sir! Ar better than shotgun until it's a semi auto shotty w/ mags.
@chrisallot66 highly recommend the Votatu brand for long arm laser light combo. I do not claim any experience with their pistol systems, but there rifle made ones are awesome and on par with streamlight, crossfire, and olight at a much lower cost.
@@Twoyutes74 I ordered a few days ago my Tokarev TBP12 bullpup for 199.00 on PSA's Black Friday sale. It's even cerakoated with a M81 Woodland pattern, comes with several chokes, a choke wrench, and an extra gas piston for heavier loads. I'm mainly going to train with cheaper birdshot so I'm just going to leave the default gas piston in it while using the other as a backup. I've followed James Reeve's Turkish shotgun torture testing, but they either fail right away, or after a bunch of magnum 3" shells. In the vast majority of TBP12 reviews they seem to be very reliable and I don't intend to fire any 3" shells out of it. So given that I'll mostly be training with birdshot, I expect mine to last many years. BTW, if you think that's cheap, I paid only 109.00 for my Tokarev TTF Titan semi-auto 12 gauge and that one's been running really well. But....I wanted a more compact shotgun with the ability to feed from a magazine and the TBP12 seemed to be the most reliable of all the Turkish bullpup shotguns that I researched. The only downside is that SDS Imports has crappy customer service. I really wish Mossberg would make a budget semi-auto bullpup like the TBP12 with parts made in Mexico and assembled in America like their Maverick 88. I'd happily pay 400 for something like that if it was made as well as their Maverick 88's. I also wish someone would make a semi-auto shotgun that could shoot Aguila minishells. That would be perfect for those who can't take the recoil from full power 12 gauge buckshot such as elderly individuals.
first weapon i fired was a 22 rifle in JROTC, the next was an M16 in basic training. The first time I fired a shotgun....... if you star with an AR you're spoiled for light recoil
@@dogdriver70 it was less a surprise for you. I'm ok with shotguns now, I almost bought an M1A (I may yet) and I'm thinking about getting an M1 Garand. But I was spoiled.
This discussion kind of parallels the 9mm vs. .45ACP/10mm carry handgun version. I have always been a Glock 20/21 guy but after much discussion with others, I have a Walther PDP Pro X coming. Modern defence loads in both 5.56 and 9mm are close enough to the damage that the big boys can do that the extra capacity and follow up shot capability has won me over. That being said, I am still keeping my Tavor TS-12 around for when the fedbois start deploying drones to attack our freedoms.
Smaller gauge....20....410...? Modern rounds....Better performance, higher effect on targets. Teach slight shooters " pull the shotgun " back" against the shoulder. Keep pulling while, relaxed trigger finget operates the trigget. Not pulling butt against the body results in the " hun " coming back and hit. Pulling it into shoulder...Get a shove. Big difference. Finally. Those " short shells"
@Bojangles6 Don't carry. I don't get around to where I need one. As FOR RECOIL. Ten years, training military on pistols, M-16s, 12 gauge pumps, grenade launchers, M-60 MGs. I have lots of experience with recoil. The hardest " kicking" rifle , to me , is the 1895 Marlin 45-70. Worked with guy, a reloader who hunted Elk up in Idaho. One day, we opened the range for people to fire their personal guns. That Marlin came out, with a replica 1874 officer 's trapdoor. Taking up the Marlin, three rounds loaded. It beat the hell out of me, even pulling the butt back against my shoulder. No " pad"...plastic. The 1873...Shooting the slight hot loads was a sweet shooter. Recoil was just a shove. The reloaded, worked up a new load. Casted his own bullets. Went to the range to check accuracy. Target at 100 yds. Fired three rounds. On first shot, scoped rifle, he noticed a puff of dark about 75 yds down range. Thought it was his imagination. Went to look at his target. No holes. Now his rifle and scope have taken elk. So he knew there was no issue there. Went back, fired three more rounds...He concluded his lead bullets were vaporizing....Had to cast harder bullets. The next year, took leave, elk season was opened,. Traveled to Idaho with his wife and son. Camped out. His little guy had wandered off and he had heard of an approaching storm. So he went out looking for him. Standing on a ridge, the snow was coming down heavy. Sat down thinking wait out the snow. Woke up the next morning. Feeling warm and sleepy....He realized he was freezing to death. He got up and started down the ridge. Two guys in a pickup saw him struggling. Stopped, took him to the hospital. His son had returned just a few minutes after he left the camp. When he came back from leave I was shocked to see what exposed skin looks like with severe frost bite. He stopped hunting , told the two rescuers they could have his Marlin left laying on the ridge. They found it and shipped it to him. He went elk hunting with a camera. Liked that better . A good photo of a great rack. Beats the dragging.
Ar-15 good across the board, but mag fed semiauto shotguns loaded with slugs have the stopping power advantage. Add a long range scope with rifled barrel and you pretty much have a 10round semiauto sniper rifle. Wearing a plate/helmet or not, the shock will go straight through with a rifled slug. Tis why if im defending an area (like home or business), i prefer and recommend a shotgun to men. (Plus my entire shotgun setup was cheaper than the cheapest ar on palmetto state armory). Heavier setup but to me it's a pretty good motivator to stay fit and get strong enough to maintain consistency. Lmk your thoughts, love the vids!
Do a most Modular platform vid for the homies Because I agree with the AR 15 being modular but the Scorpion Evo is very much modular and I want to hear your take.
My Vepr12 based mag fed shotgun has 20 and 12 round mags, they can be mounted to my belt via a kydex clip using 3M double sided tape to mount the clip to the mag, they just hang on the belt. I reload from a closed bolt in 3 gun matches weekly, it’s not difficult, I’m also really fast with it, BUT, with the 19” barrel it is fairly unwieldy in small places despite basically being an RPK with a shotgun bolt and barrel. I’ve never even considered leaning it against my nightstand for home defense.
My Derya can run 5rd and 10rd mags and 20rd and 30rd drums.. and I can swap out mags on a closed bolt lightning fast no problem. I also have modified vests and chest rigs that can comfortably hold eight 5rd mags and six 10rd mags - that is 14 mags total and 100rds of ammo - For some.. that may seem like a lot of weight.. but running, hiking, and training with that extra weight has made me used to it.. and I dont even feel it.
That's kind of like saying that a wrench is better than a screwdriver. They have different jobs. Shotguns excel at close range. The AR-15 is a better for medium to long range. In a home defense scenario, if I shot someone who was ten feet away from me with an AR-15 the round would go through the intruder, through the wall and maybe through someone in my neighbor's place. That's a lot less likely with a shotgun. By the same token, shotguns aren't that useful beyond relatively close range.
I still prefer shotguns for home defense. I hunt and shoot trap with one so i'm very familiar with it. My AR-15s consist of a range toy and a battle rifle which I have because i feel its my duty as an American. Really reserved for more SHTF.
On oct 26 me and wife rented an air bb in elk country Pennsylvania 15 miles out of town the town had about 40 houses a grocery store no fuel. At about 11 we hear the gravel on drive and see a truck and the doors open we can only barely see due to trees blocking view. I brought my mossberg 500 with slugs for protection from bear. We got in loft took position to cover door and half the windows but i only had 6 shells loaded and 15 total with me. Seeing all the doors open no telling how many people were coming. If it’s six people I better not miss or will be having to reload in stressful conditions. From now on i will take the 12ga for bear but will take the ar to be able to stay in the fight. Luckily they didn’t try to come in probably dropping off a poacher or picking him up.the property backed to state forest
"The 1929 edition of the same textbook stated, in addition, that rcoil velocity should not exceed 15 fps; above that velocity a gun-headache was very likely to occur." --The British Textbook of Small Arms. YIKES! A headache of any sort would definitely reduce a soldier's performance.
I think the best compromise you can possibly have is a large caliber AR platform rifle. Large caliber means you get a little bit of the "oomph" smaller AR's lack, and a larger bullet means more room within the projectile itself that makes it more possible to have varied bullet shapes/designs. While not nearly shotgun levels of versatile, you have more choice than with little bullets. And, most importantly, it's the most "does a bit of everything" type of gun. AR's are more pricey, but a big caliber AR platform can be accurate, strong enough for most things short of bear and elk, not to mention bad guys, and they can reach out and touch an animal or a bandit from further than you can reliably get a shotgun to hit. That's where I'd put my money if it was a "you only get 1 gun" scenario.
I got one for ya, and I say this as someone who also loves shotguns, it's incredibly annoying finding proper stationary targets for shotguns. Because shotgun ammo has a tendency to obliterate whatever it's shot at (even birdshot will chew away at it) your average affordable wood-based or thin metal target stands won't cut it and requires some kind of thicker fully steel construction. Meanwhile an AR can make use of even a cheapo Crosman paper target holder, considering it makes nice singular holes with each trigger pull.
As someone that has both an AR and a mag fed shotgun, I can confirm. The amount of space 15 rounds of 12 gauge takes is about as much as 90 rounds of 556. In mags of course.
If/when I ever had to use cool gun , with can,lazer,f-light ,recoil buffers, springs, etc. would be sad to loose for a year or evermore, now that would suck !!
I will sum up my exact comparison video as simply as I can. AR shoots a mag of 30, 62 grain projectiles, and you can fire off all 30 in about 8 seconds. A 12 gauge loaded with 00 buck holds 5 shells with each shell holding 9, 62 grain projectiles. Each AR round hits you at about 1,300 ft/lbs of energy. The full payload of 00 buck will hit you at over 2,000 ft/lbs of energy, AND, you are receiving 45 rounds of 62 grain 00 buck with 5 trigger pulls💁🏽♂️
I dare say that, WITHOUT a magnifying sight, your no-escape-zone is about 70m. That befits both the AR and the shoitgun. So I would choose the shotgun. If magnifying optics is an option, then the AR becomes more desirable, as now you can engage from 3 city blocks away.
I've always wondered what circumstances do the civilian gun enthusiasts believe all the CQA and CQB training (not to mention the tactical equipment) will come in handy?
Yeah, Clint Smith is a certified copaholic boomer. He also talks about how he went to war with as many magazines for his M16 as he could carry. You'll notice a shotgun has never been used as a primary small arm, by any army, during any armed conflict, in the history of the planet.
@ sure, that’s why Taurus G2s exist. I just get tired of seeing the same old “shotguns blow people in half” comments. If more is better, why stop there? Get a real gun, like a 500 nitro.
Yesterday I watched a rerun of Walker Texas Ranger, where Chuck Norris shot out the tires of a semi truck speeding down the highway... from 30 yards away, in a helicopter, using a shotgun. Clearly if an AR was better, Chuck would've used that instead. The science doesn't lie!

I recently purchased a Tavor TS12 and it has been extremely reliable after hundreds of rounds. I honestly can't imagine a more capable weapon for CQC.
Nice Metal Gear Solid inventory ref drop! 😂🐍📦 Respect!
Dam James… I didn’t know you were transferring
Shotguns are just fun
first weapon i fired was a 22 rifle in JROTC, the next was an M16 in basic training. The first time I fired a shotgun....... if you star with an AR you're spoiled for light recoil
My first was a 30.06 at 12 years old. Now as an adult, I don't even notice recoil.
@@dogdriver70 it was less a surprise for you. I'm ok with shotguns now, I almost bought an M1A (I may yet) and I'm thinking about getting an M1 Garand. But I was spoiled.
@@dogdriver70 an oh yeah I was a skinny kid at the time, under 120lbs!
Cool, next are you going to tell me why my car is better than my refrigerator?
As always, your videos are awesome. Good stuff, thanks.
I duct taped my shotgun to my AR-15. Checkmate.
Ima let you finish, but that's the greatest mustache of all time.
Vote for Pedro.
Push pull is how you mitigate recoil in a fighting shotgun, and if you think a .410 is a good defensive gun, you probably carry .22lr.
Boomer.
Do a most Modular platform vid for the homies
Because I agree with the AR 15 being modular but the Scorpion Evo is very much modular and I want to hear your take.
I also have modified vests and chest rigs that can comfortably hold eight 5rd mags and six 10rd mags - that is 14 mags total and 100rds of ammo -
For some.. that may seem like a lot of weight.. but running, hiking, and training with that extra weight has made me used to it.. and I dont even feel it.
I still like the idea of a chunk-remover for use inside my house. Flight control is some scary stuff.
Correct
..and outside also!
I keep 20 shotgun magazines in my metal gear inventory.
James is turning into a silver fox haha. Don't worry brother, I'm heading that way myself.
I expect a Walrus Stach by next march
We know where Peanut ended up.
Too soon? My bad
THANKS JAMES,
AR recoil vs Shotgun recoil…. One man’s disadvantage is another man’s advantage. 😂
I'd argue they're not comparable. They each have their own separate application and there for cannot be compared.
But I like shotguns
So argument invalidated
That's cool, you can like trans women as well.
The answer is biases. It's not a "which is better" topic, it's which one do you train with to become more efficient with.
AR goes better with school backpack and lunchbox
Love the consistent Files jabs 😂
You are on a comedic roll in this video. Keep up the good-and amusing-work.
5:35 James summons Firepower United
That's a handsome impotent Walter White mustache
Your mustache hair is in violations.Police that mustache!
"cause I said so." People need to lighten up.
Nice article from Chuck Hawks on recoil, is he related to Mike Hawks?
Dude, is that a caterpillar on your lip?😂
Thanks James I have now made the decision to buy a 10.5 Genesis 12 firearm in 12 gauge and now I have the best of both worlds.
That mustache is a better home defense weapon than a shotgun or AR-15.
James growing that ‘I live in a van down by the river’ flavor saver. Halloween was last month sir…
Love this content so much. Just discovered the Taran videos he did. Gold.
Why is he wearing his wife's jeans at 6:20??? 😅
His wife's boyfriend needed James' pants that day.
His shorts are at the dry cleaner
Why wouldn’t he? Have you seen that cake?
Tighter pants, tighter groups
As someone that has both an AR and a mag fed shotgun, I can confirm. The amount of space 15 rounds of 12 gauge takes is about as much as 90 rounds of 556. In mags of course.
If/when I ever had to use cool gun , with can,lazer,f-light ,recoil buffers, springs, etc. would be sad to loose for a year or evermore, now that would suck !!
Next James will be arguing that Narsil is better than Mjölnir.
Louisiana Buyers Club.
👌
@3:42 lol- there are mags that are longer than a nutnfancy video 😂
Hey, arfcom is not boomerville. We like plastic guns more than wood. Now where did I put that pistol that won 2 World Wars...
Neither is better. The right tool for the right job.
Shotguns are for little birds. AR-15 is for everything else
2 deagles with a silly red costume is better than both
I've always wondered what circumstances do the civilian gun enthusiasts believe all the CQA and CQB training (not to mention the tactical equipment) will come in handy?
Arfcom loves you James, but only when you stuff yourself into those short shorts.
@5:45 amazing line about candles 😂
My question is why choose only one. I do not like to play that way. I say yes please, I'd like a shotgun and an AR.
Damn James did you just drop some bars? 7:30😮!
Someone once said that rifles put holes on people, and shotguns take chunks out of people.
Yeah, Clint Smith is a certified copaholic boomer. He also talks about how he went to war with as many magazines for his M16 as he could carry. You'll notice a shotgun has never been used as a primary small arm, by any army, during any armed conflict, in the history of the planet.
@@forktheporkNot everyone is in an army. An individual might have different needs or wants with firearms.
@ sure, that’s why Taurus G2s exist. I just get tired of seeing the same old “shotguns blow people in half” comments. If more is better, why stop there? Get a real gun, like a 500 nitro.
Don't confuse capacity with payload that's where people are getting it twisted.
