YES!!! That was pretty much my first thought when I saw this video. I haven't watched it yet, but Project Firestart, Maniac Mansion (the scene when you enter the kitchen and have to run away from Edna - God, I had to prepare mentally for this every time), Xenomorph, and those Mindscape adventures like Deja Vu and Uninvited, those would be my top choices. And also Paradroid, when you've progressed really far, and then you're cautiously hovering through the decks knowing that the next encounter could end it all.

Mad doctor was one of my favourites. It felt like a kind of "life simulator", since the people of the village did their routine stuffs in the game and the player could watch them. The only disadvantage of the game that even after killing a few villagers unnoticed, the left started to attack the player, so it was almost not possible to complete the game without killing everyone.

You don't give Forbidden Forest its due. It was a fantastic game, with graphics that have their own style, blocky yes but you have to consider it came out at the beginning of the c64 era. Playability is ok, atmosphere is umatched in any c64 game and music is absoultely amazing: the best you can find on a c64. Plus it's the work of one single man. I have incredibly fond memories of this game, it was one of my first.

The game Ghosthunter was actually originally a type-in BASIC game from a German magazine. The game was originally called Geisterjäger and released in Homecomputer 1983/05. The company that released the English version released it on a compilation pack without permission of the original dev. Robtek were notorious for this. I guess by BASIC type-in standards, the game's OK, but as a commercial release.... Jesus.

  • @lurkerrekrul

    Couple other games I'd recommend'
    Castle Master 1 & 2 - You're in a 3D haunted castle with ghosts and rats.
Darkland - This is a 2014 SEUCK game, which I normally find too generic, but I like this one. You walk right to left in a dark landscape with the round beam of your flashlight out in front of you. Octopus like creatures come at you in the darkness and most of them can only be seen when you shine your light on them. Otherwise, you might just see a brief glimpse of them when they move. You can only shoot them when your light is on them. It has a nice, creepy atmosphere, even if there's not much variety to it.
Monster Bash - Monsters run through the graveyard and you have to prevent them from reaching the other side by moving the joystick to bop them with tombstones.
Mountain King - You're collecting diamonds in a spooky mine infested with bats. Get 1,000, track down the flame spirit, offer it to the ghostly skull guardian, grab the crown and make it to the highest peak before time runs out, or a bat steals the crown. Don't go down on the lowest level or the giant spider might get you.
Zombi - Graphic adventure game set in a shopping mall and directly inspired by Dawn of the Dead.

Nice list. However, none of them hold a candle to ALIEN ( based on the 1979 film ) for C-64. That game will give you a heart attack when playing in the dark. I should know. I used to have it in the 80s and will never forget it. The terror is palpitating. Period.

Other games. Addams Family, Frankenstein (platform version), Bride of Frankenstein, Rocky Horror, House of Usher, Scary Monsters, Alien, Haunted House, Nightmare on Elm street, Frightmare, Ghost Chaser, Vampire, Mr. Weems and the She Vampires, Werewolves of London. I'll stop now. 😁

I think 8 bit games were either designed blissfully ignorantly with respect to the level of difficulty the average player would be able to handle _OR_ they were *_meant_* to be unsolvable for everyone but a tiny elite of hardcore gamers.
Either way, people still spent actual money on them. Well, some people...

I remember a C64 game where at the start it showed you the complete level with a big castle or something at the end. You only had one life to reach the end.
It was spooky themed and very atmospheric, i remember not getting very far, killing all the floating skulls or was it wasps.. that would go around in a circle and then jumping on a log, but always falling off.
If any one has a clue as to what that game was called, that would be very much appreciated.

I have a question for the author; has he ever heard of a classic puzzle game called "The Castles of Doctor Creep"? It's a cross between a puzzle game and an escape room, and was made by Broederbund (Printshop; Carmen Sandiago). In it, there is a list of castle layouts; you choose one to go through. Someone used an editor to make a sequel (Dungeons of Doctor Creep), containing additional layouts in place of the originals. I've also heard of a sequel (The Castles of Doctor Creep 3) that simply is both sets of castles combined into a single game (sadly I don't seem to be able to use the image files for *that* one. :( ). Nevertheless, I recommend this game to you. What do you think?

That sounds great. I love escape rooms. A few people have told me to check it out. I plan on doing a part 2 on this subject soon, so I will add that to the list of games to include. Thanks for the recommendation. 😊

That was a great game. It was super fun with 2 players, as all the backtracking in single player mode could be a nightmare. Played it quite a bit back in the day with friends and a good dose of the old marijuana.

You forgot 3 really great games… Castle of Dr Creep, and Maniac Mansion. Of course the latter one went on to be very famous but the first one is a great Mad Scientist puzzler that creeped me out as a kid and Maniac mansion was very scary to me as a kid.

Have you played the MS-DOS sequel to MM (in Dosbox)? It's called "Day of the Tentacle", and is better than the first! I really prefer it's saturday morning cartoon look over the NES-like aesthetics of the original.

@@thereviewsbrothers3854 You missed it because you made the mistake of not watching through the entire video at least once before uploading it. I hope you do fix the video and re-upload it, as the audio for that first game is so obnoxiously loud, many viewers will probably stop watching and click elsewhere once their eardrums are assaulted by that portion of the video.
