  • An amazing evening session spent at Cologne Central Station where we see countless services from DB Regio, Intercity, RXX, National Express, Flixtrain and Thalys.
Cologne station has gone through several changes throughout its lifetime, infact this wasn't the original station. Before this were five stations located around the city. Bonn-Cologne Railway Company, Cologne-Krefeld Railway Company, Rhenish Railway Company, Bergisch-Markische Railway Company and the Cologne-Minden Railway Company.
It wasn't until 1854 when local authorities decided that the city needed one central main station located close to the river and to the cathedral. And so the main central was created.
The first station was built in 1857 and officially opened to the public in 1859, it was a terminus and a through station at first. However it didn't take long for this station to soon start reaching capacity with the amount of trains and passengers coming through. The railways in Germany weren't nationalised until the 1880s, by this time plans were put forward to redesign the station.
When plans were put forward for a new station there were two options that were put on the table to be considered. These were: Construction of a major railway station in an open area north of Venloer Straße and reclassifying of the original station as a minor station. Or, Replacement of the central station with a new building at the same place with an increase in platforms and the construction of two secondary passenger stations (Cologne West and Cologne South) on the urban railway on the model of Berlin Stadtbahn and a rail freight bypass.
It took almost three years of going back and forth with local governments and city officials to finally agree on an option that would work well for the city, and this was option 2. It was agreed in 1883. When the station was completed it had several large waiting rooms with a large roof that would cover platforms 2 to 7 today. The station had four terminating platforms on the east side and four terminating platforms on the west side, there were two through platforms, one of the south side of the station and the other was on the north.
The station stayed this way until it was rebuilt yet again from 1905 to 1911 when the tracks were getting relaid and redesigned, all of the terminus platforms were changed to make way for through tracks. Only the first and second class waiting rooms in Trankgasse and Johannisstraße (streets) survived World War II and subsequent modifications and are now used as a restaurant and the Alter Wartesaal events centre.
Cologne was all but destroyed during WW2 and the station was no exception, there was constant back and fourth with city officials and DB at the time as to where the new station should be built, at first it was decided that the station should be built on one of the many freight yards the served the city but in the end it was agreed that the new station should replace the older model that was destroyed during the war. This didn't take place until 1953 when the first demolition work started to take place, there wasn't a new structure put in place until 1957 when the new station hall was opened.
In 1991 when the S-Bahn was being constructed the famous Hohenzollern bridge was given two additional tracks for the S-Bahn network.
In 2000 a new shopping centre was built and opened in the main station concourse. There is such a hive of activity on the lower level of this station it really is quite something!
There were also plans to have DB operate their ICE trains from here to London but sadly those plans were shelved and will are likely to never see the light of day again. So for people wishing to get here by train your best bet is to either go to Brussels and pick up an ICE running to Frankfurt or you go to Paris Nord and pick up a Thalys train.
My next station will be Koblenz.
I hope you all enjoy the commentary throughout, I appreciate it won't be to everyone's taste.

Hi Tornado922. Great rush hour film at Cologne Central. Regarding the chaps having Pizza on the edge of the platform at 21:43, at least they were sitting where they were so that they were in no danger from any incoming or outgoing services. Looking forward to watching the next film at Koblenz Central. Kind regards, Chris.

Thanks very much, I just love the fact they were happily sat there eating pizza at the end of a station without a care in the world haha

The newest ICE sets are based on the Eurostar E320 sets, so the British Rail class 374 in this case.

@@Tornado922 indeed the differences are in the system and of course the length and color of the trains while the E320 is a 16 coach EMU and having the Blue,Yellow and Silver color with the new Eurostar logo, The BR 407 and BR408 are 8 coach EMU's and have the White with the Red stripe in the colors of DB Fernverkehr (the part of DB AG wixh provides all the long distance trains so as the Intercity, ICE and Eurocity trains)

I'm surprised NatEx has The Rhein-Ruhr Express franchise given their poor performance on The UK Rail scene in the past Jarred. Also there is another type of DMU in Germany that tilts it's The Class 612 They usually run out of Dresden to places such as Nuremberg. They're Named RegioSwingers. As with The Class 442 Talent-2's they're nicknamed Hamster Cheeks. The clue is in their fronts.

      @Tornado922  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think some of the designs in the trains over in Germany is absolutely fantastic! I guess you can have a poor performance running trains in the UK but as long as you don't let if affect some of your other operations then you'll be good to go

@Tornado922 the ICE trains wich you mentioned are indeed the ICE 1 BR401,ICE2 BR402 and the ICE4 BR412 (but there's a subserie of namely the BR 412.2 is a 7 car set, the BR412.0 is a 12 car set and the BR412.4 is a 13 car set often refered as the ICE4 XXL)but the ICE set you mention at 16:19 is not an ICE T the ICE T BR411 and BR415 are 5 and 7 car sets and the ICE TD diesel 4 car set are ICE train sets wich look the same as the ICE3 but with a nose and a not so smoorh bow valve) the ICE3 403 sets are only allowed to drive services in Germany the BR 406 is allowed to provide services from Basel SBB and Frankfurt am Main HBF to Brussel Zuid/Midi and Amsterdam Centraal and the BR 407 is allowed to beside Germany to provide services to Paris Gare du Est together with the TGV Duplex and BR408 ICE3 Neo will replace the ICE3M br406
