  • In this episode, I was privileged to talk with Jim Kerr ‪@Simpleminds1‬ about his childhood growing up in the gritty suburbs of Glasgow. He shares not only some of the challenges he faced in his journey to success but also how he used them to his advantage.

    Jim do remember me.
    • we met at the Mandela bar in Strathclyde University fir the grand opening.
    • We met at downtown Tironto at a radio station.
    • I throw up the celtic top, unfortunately landed on your napper.
    Well let me tell you, I won a karaoke event by singing Ghost Dancing. My BSc MSc and PhD in mathematics was your platform to make me think.
    Thank

      You know, despite being super famous, he was the first person that agree to get involved in this podcast because he wanted to inspire people. That tells us everything about him - such a decent person.

    I went Roundhay park at Leeds with three mates from Hartlepool. Back in the late 80's when the conversation was U2 or Simpleminds who were the greatest. Simple Minds won because there songs had songs within songs so mysterious. I am now a Taxi Driver in Hartlepool took a few folks to Hartlepool Rail Station and asked are you travelling far and they said they were going to Scotland to see their fav band. Well i had a lot to say on the matter.

    At their peak they graduated into a world class band. New Gold Dream is one of my top 5 albums of all time, up there with my favourite Kate Bush albums. Big music for big hearts and minds.

    Brilliant interview so down to earth Jim Kerr is very humble & happy with his life and achievements without forgetting his own background from where he came from. My favourite band Simple Minds and I have only came across your channel here on TH-cam. I am going to subscribe to it. Have you done Deacon Blue’s Ricky Ross yet ? This music is all from the same era .

    👏 what an interview, great story of how everything came together, and the school time what we can all relate to, your turn to read infront of the class. I hated that, one time I was reading and the word was beasts and breasts came out of my mouth everyone was laughing I had no idea what they were all laughing at as I didn't even notice.

    I'm an italian Simple minds fan since 1983. I saw 22 Simple minds gigs since 1984 to 2018 and i will go to Milan in April 2024 to see the 23gig! As a fan there is a lot to say about Simple minds' career. From my point of view, they probably would have been even more successful if Mick McNeil hadn't left the band (but Derek Forbes' departure was also painful). What can I say...but from a certain point of view, personally I prefer that they didn't have the great success of U2, for example, because the last 4/5 U2 works are embarrassing (and I was a big fan of U2 over the years 80/90), how embarrassing Bono vox's attitude is. While Jim (despite being a bit self-centered, and you can see it from the choices made in the band over the years) has made better musical (and otherwise) choices; and the last 4/5 Simple minds CDs prove it!! Ps Jim if you read this comment....I really miss Mel Gaynor too....although Cherisse is very good. Greetings from Italy

    When I think of the difference between Jim and Bono, Jim is someone who I think would be very approachable and you could sit down with him and have a pint. Bono otoh is a pretentious narcissist who I doubt would give a fan the time of day.

    Jim. You're a singer in a band. Not a great singer, but a good band with some great tunes. Leave it at that. Count yourself lucky.....very lucky.

    • @daryljackson3430
      @daryljackson3430 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes he was not the greatest singer but the band are successful! Though I have watched them in their twilight years I feel that Jim’s voice is not as strong and as it is expected when age takes hold and he doesn’t do high notes anymore .
